what's the point of just cut-and-pasting another website's list, but not putting your own commentary?

Fucking J-kwon? J-kwon?!

Sometimes I think PFM pretends to like shit they really know is horrible just to show how truly ironic and indie they are by enjoying the anti-indie.

It feels like a list with no numerical order, just a list of songs. I mean, 17 Years at 45? That's ridiculous.

The strokes and Regina Specktor's "Modern Girls" should have made the cut!

If PFork put on a top 50 singles list with all indie/obscure singles, I feel like people would be mad at them for being elitist. But now that they add in stuff like J-Kwon and Twista, they're trying to be indie by not being indie. That's stupid. I think they actually like these songs.

The Rat by the Walkmen is the SONG OF THE YEAR. It's perfect.

I wrote:

Sometimes?! You have to read every word of Pitchfork with a special indie-ironic decoder ring. I have a hard time believing them when they say "no seriously, we're not trying to be ironic by liking Brittney Spears, we genuinely like the song".

Let me put it this way: if they could only pick three singles for the year, would they really pick Annie, Jay-Z and Britney Spears? Or would they put three obscure bands there instead for fear that to put two platinum sellers in a choice of three, they'd risk being seen as having bourgeois tastes.

My point is that they either don't have the courage of their convictions or even convictions in the first place.

However I might add that they're the worst musical info website out there, except every other one.

Bitchfork eats it. No Futureheads, TV on the Radio, or Rilo Kiley??
Song of the year is Ted Leo/Pharmacists' "Me and Mia"

Of course lists like this are silly. Everyone is going to disagree (Frankly, why Annie is on the top is beyond me). But they are still interesting. I'm downloading a few more songs this afternoon to see what all the hubbub is about (Justus Kohncke?), and I'm sure other people are too. What's so terrible about that?

It's a funny reversal to see indie kids complaining that there isn't enough guitar based indie rock on the Pitchfork list.

both Annie song are tremendous.

But I agree on "Me and Mia" not being there. That's harsh. And same with "Staring at the sun"

the list isn't THAT bad though.

I assure you that Scissor Sisters and Ted Leo and the entire indie rock guitar brigage will be on the albums list tomorrow!

the fact is, pitchfork does a "singles" list seperate from the album list for a reason...single assumes a sense of pop and catchiness in the song that differs than just a single good song. define good: sure i love band out there that are pushing the envelope, but sometimes i just want some bands with some pop-sensibility. Did i enjoy the wrens show sat?? yes, i loved it...can i handle that music on a friday afternoon...umm..no

and that annie song is addictive, no matter what you say

When is everyone going to figure out that Xiu Xiu sucks? Maybe I should breathily recite bad poetry while masturbating violently and see how many elitists' year-end lists I make.

Xiu Xiu is THE example of how so much of what is defined as indie should be relabeled "Music That No One Wants to Buy For a Really Good Reason."

I've never gotten him and I hope I nevewr do.

Not quite sure, but I think that the list compiles actual singles put out this year. Not just good album tracks. Was "Mia and Mia" packaged as a single for distribution? Was "Never Gonna Change"?

"Heartbeat" is a pretty good song, but it's too bad they didn't include "Wonderful People" by Q and Not U, or "Darts of Pleasure," which is infinitely better than "Take Me Out" in my opinion. Also, feel free to hate on me, but I really like Jamie Stewart and his "breathily recited bad poetry."

Wait, I'm not the only one who thinks Xiu Xiu is poo-poo? Awesome. Now if only people could start admitting that Wilco and Fiery Furnaces are overrated too, all will be well with the world.

Was "Heartbeat"? Nope. It's the *forthcoming* single from Anniemal, as in, hasn't been released and won't be until 2005 and should be exempt from the list.

I understand that the official single is not released yet, but think about it from their POV. There are thousands of album tracks they could have included. There needs to be some sort of rules for this sort of thing doesn't there? I almost always like an album track better than the hit single. But I see how they probably went through all the promo singles they got and compiled it from that.

I hate on Britney's lifestyle like everyone else on here, but "Toxic" was an insanely fun song, I think, and deserves _a_ spot on this list. NOT
#3, however--that's heinous. They should have given that to Kylie if they wanted to put a pop queen high on the list.

why all the animosity towards xiu xiu... yes it does sound like he's in the middle of a nervous breakdown on every song but that's what's so beautiful about it... the single "clowne towne" blows away all those songs on that there list
