Pitchfork's Top Tracks Of The Year

With all of the lists coming at ya this time of year, it's tempting to fuck selective attenuation and just ignore 'em all -- but today Pitchfork published their top tracks list and, naturally, we were down to take a look. The Knife, Hot Chip, and Clipse were the only artists to place two tunes in the top twenty, and the list features its least pretentious #1 yet. Worth a visit 'cause there are a ton of MP3s, but if anyone has a .zip of the whole bag we'd be much obliged. Check the list:

What a week for Timberlake, eh? "Roscoe" at #97 is low ball by any stretch, but it's nice to see "Apple Orchard," "Wolf Like Me" and "Young Folks" get some well-deserved love. The Fork's releasing their album picks tomorrow, just ahead of the results for this year's Gummy awards. And while we won't tell you winners just yet, there was an outstanding showing for "Britney's baby oven" as Most Overblogged Act. You probably won't argue that, but we figure y'alls got thoughts on JT being #1 on this here tracks list. Get it off your chest.

I'm sorry, but I'm upset that Justin Timberlake was #1. Even if it really is the best single of the year, or they're trying to be less pretentious, or the choice is semi-ironic. I read Pitchfork for snobbery. They need to deliver.

Not bad by any means, "My Love" is a great track and they had a good mix of some other stuff. However.....no Decemberists or Destroyer? I call shenanigans on that.

That 'Crazy' isn't on this list makes any #1 pretentious by default. Christian Aguilera makes the cut, but not the most infectious single of the year (and maybe of the last several years) that was almost universally loved by every subsection of music fans.

And I'm almost equally annoyed that The Killers make the cut but 'We Used to Vacation' by the Cold War Kids gets left off.

What do they mean by "single"? Did the song have to be promoted by their record label as a "hit" or can it be any song off any record?

It's important to note that this was a list of the top TRACKS of 2006, not the top SINGLES. Album cuts and remixes and mix tape stuff were all valid submissions.

Also, they explain why Gnarls Barkley didn't make the list at their website.

Call me crazy, but I still say "Is It Any Wonder?" by Keane is the best song of the year. Here are some other goodies...

Calexico - "Deep Down"
CSS - "Patins"
CSS - "Alcohol"
Clearlake - "Finally Free"
Blowoff - "Hormone Love"
Alejandro Escovedo - "Dear Head On The Wall"
Mew - "A Dark Design"
Cold War Kids - "Hang Me Out To Dry"
Beth Orton - "Heart of Soul"
Mission of Burma - "2wice"
Morrissey - "In The Future When All's Well"
Christina Aguilera - "Ain't No Other Man"

I haven't heard of half the crap this year, and I used to be a hardcore indie yuppie just like all y'all. Indie, whatever that means now, sucked in 2006, totally lost me.

Also, I call bullshit on Rihanna's "S.O.S." being way the hell down at 95, especially since the P-fork types like her. Definitely one of the top 5 pop songs this year.

It's interesting how "Crazy" & St. Elsewhere are missing from many best-of-2006 lists, seeing as how everyone (indie AND mainstream) was going apeshit over them this year. What happened?

It's scientific fact that the best song of the year is "Star Witness," by Neko Case. I'm shocked she's not even on the list.

A decent second half doesn't save a weak song. I had never heard this song until pitchfork called it the track of the year. But it's a ridiculous choice. I guess that keyboard line in the opening section that is emulated in the second half is the hook, but the incessant repeating of "My Love" is really obnoxious and akin to a one year-old's attempt at making a memorable pop single.
This new Timberlake album was completely weak. "Sexy Back" grew on me, I guess, but it simply proves to me that "Rock Your Body" was the exception and not the rule.
I didn't hear that much new music this year because most of it is pretty weak, but I can't imagine any single being as brilliant as "Wolf Like Me." I suppose the first track from Make Believe's second album was pretty stellar, as well, but God forbid that Pitchfork give anything Kinsella-related any credit.
Someone please bring the Brill Building back and leave the pop musicians out of the writing process. The Beatles were actually forced to write good songs in the 60s because the competition was so high, even from the regular pop artists, who let people like Carole King and Gerry Goffin handle the writing process.

Where's Final Fantasy in this maelstrom of year end goodness? He Poos Clouds was a fantastic album; perhaps not the best of the year, but definitely in the top ten. And "This Lamb Sells Condos" is hands down one of the best songs of 06. But, no love, no love. What gives?

Odd that "All Fires" is on there, and yet no Sunset Rubdown to speak of. That track is a "Shut Up I Am Dreaming" B-Side, at best. There are a ton of other glaring omissions aswell.

And regardless of whether or not the Timberlake song is good, I think that most people go to Pitchfork to find music that is somewhat... obscure. Not that mainstream music is entirely shit — but I don't need a website like Pitchfork to expose me to it. It's everywhere.

final fantasy gets the shaft in US/UK media. Canada and mainland europe love him. Chalk it up to foreign language press, I don't know. I agree, his album was sorely overlooked.

Also surprised not to see a single track from Sunset Rubdown and Grizzly Bear.

Herman Dune's "I Wish I Could See You Soon". Is it really that much to ask? It's by far the best song this year, coupled with the best music video ... ever.

Also kinda shocked to see no Weird Al love on the pfork 100, I mean White and Nerdy ruled iTunes for awhile right?

And just one opinion on why it's a good thing that Stereogum 'recaps' the fork. As long as Pitchfork doesn't allow comments on their website there is no real public forum to discuss these pressing music issues. Stereogum has kinda become the default for that, opening up a vent for pent up rage at Timberlake and the like. It's good to know that not everyone takes pitchfork's word as golden and that there is a place where we can in turn play fantasy fork more or less. I don't love football, I do love music, so while jocks get their ESPN, i got my stereogum. I knew i came here today looking to see what others (and scott) thought of the 100, so don't try to take that away from me.

Hey Nick. Nice work, not only did you manage to put the WORST song on the Clipse album in your top 5, but you also picked 4 other songs (2 of which are decent but not amazing) that are nowhere near the top 5 tracks, all while claiming to be listing the top "3" tracks.

Apparantly they made it a "favorites" list and not a "best of" list, and gnarls was leaked back in 2005. "My Love" wouldn't have been my #1. It seems a little too contrived to have it at that spot.

My biggest beef was that there was no Marit Larsen. They didn't even review her album but gave her single "Don't Save Me" 4 stars.

I do appreciate terming it "favorites" rather than "best of", although on second examination, it seems that they switch off between the two. "Favorites" acknowledges the subjectivity of taste, etc. That being said, Wamp Wamp is (subjectively speaking) not the best song on Hell Hath No Fury. Nor is it not the worst.

I hear the opening from "My Love" and all I can think is that Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes's "Block Party" has a better beat (it's from 2001). Plus, T.I has a Beck delivery on this song (closest to "Clap Hands" (also a better beat)). Which is fine by me, but then make a Beck song #1. And Dane, while you liked the second half, I found it unremarkable. Hm.

"SexyBack" would have been a less pretentious choice! Hee hee.

what is the deal with the JT song anyway? What is so appealing about it? I mean the beat is pretty wicked, but come on, the lyrics are lame. 'I can see us holding hands walking on the beach...' WOw. this is the single of the year hands down. Really. They just avoid the subject of lyrical content completely obviously knowing it suuucks. The single of the year can't just be a decent 'club banger' with a nice Timbaland beat. it has to be near perfect if you're going to call it the single best song of the last 365 days of music releases. please.

Is it just me or is My Love a really bad song? I mean I loved Rock Your Body, and SexyBack grew on me but My Love, really?

14. Take A Chance - The Magic Numbers

That's something I'd rather see.

However, I was at a party this weekend and My Love was played at least 5 times -- that song was huge this year.

Aaron G,

Yes. You are horribly wrong. To suggest that T.I. is jacking any sort of Beck flow is ridiculous--it seems quite apparent that, if anything, the opposite is true. Not that Beck is on some T.I. shit, but that Beck's "flow," as you call it, is stolen from rappers past. Really, it's just crazy to compare T.I.'s rapping ability to Beck's. I can't believe someone had to point this out to you.

Figured you'd say that about the stolen flow. What you say makes sense, and I don't think either person is consciously jacking anything, if there in fact is something to jack! My point was that I didn't find much original in the song. And yes, I'll be crazy and compare away.

aaron g, i completely agree with yessir's assesment on this one. also with p-fork's description of the track, hendrix comparisons aside. it bangs because it distills the entire southern "style" into one clean line. i've rareley heard anything so chillingly and singularly effective in my life, despite it being so "mainstream".

also, "shoulder lean" by young dro feat t.i. should be somewhere on that list as well because it works for the exact same reasons.

I don't have a problem with mainstream if it's good. I like the song, it's fun (for various reasons). I agree that I must not have the acuity or depth of knowledge about the song's lineage (not being sarcastic here). I like that the beginning of the song is clean/distilled. I guess I don't always appreciate clean lines.

My one listen, while watching the video (which, in addition to having "compromised" sound, may have a different mix, after all, so we may be wasting time arguing (time that's already wasted some)) must not have been enough.

I'd dance to the damn thing, OK? DILUTE! DILUTE! OK!

(Dr. Bronner reference)

So who came up with the "retro record player photo" first? Them or The Onion AV Club?

'MikeyK' a ways up there is the only person here I can agree with. Seriously, go listen to Chris Clark's "Ted" from Body Riddle and shut the fuck up.

And cmon yall, listing Justin Timberlake isn't being ironic or anti-pretentious or anything - it's a great song! Lose the moppy haired rock obsession for a min and appreciate hotness.

Even though "What Goes Around / Comes Around" is the best song on the album by far...

i have no problem with a JT song being number one, but thats not even the hottest track on his album.

While I don't mind Justin Timberlake I also can't see how it was top. Ace 'trance' style chords apart, it was nothing we hadn't heard before. Certainly not in the same class as 'Hey ya' which did not wear best song. T.I number 3? Really? Terrible tinny beats look pathetic next to The Knife.
Number one had to be either Hot Chip, The Knife or Miss Newsom's utterly jaw dropping 'Emily'.

I'm not an indie-obsessed garage boy, but I hadn't even heard "My Love" before reading the list. It's a cool track, but SexyBack wipes the floor with it - if any JT song should have made it into the Pitchfork top 10, it should have been the latter.
