President Bush's iPod
What's Dubya's playlist for eroding our grandchildren's retirement benefits? NY Times listens in...
Selections From George W. Bush's iPod"No one should psychoanalyze the song selection," says Mark McKinnon, chief media strategist during campaign '04. "It's music to get over the next hill."
- Alejandro Escovedo "Castanets"
- John Hiatt "Circle Back"
- John Fogerty "Centerfield"
- The Knack "My Sharona"
- Kenny Loggins "Alive 'N' Kickin'"
- Joni Mitchell "(You're So Square) Baby, I Don't Care"
- Van Morrison "Brown Eyed Girl"
- a lot of George Jones, Alan Jackson, and Kenny Chesney
Fair enough, but someone should really burn him these awesome Dinosaur Jr. reissues.

Rolling Stone deputy managing editor Joe Levy on President Bush's iPod playlist, which includes songs by Joni Mitchell, John Hiatt, the Knack and John Fogerty: "One thing that's interesting is that the president likes artists who don't like him." (Rolling Stone via New York Times)

"My Sharona"?? Good to know the Prez rocks the underage-girl fetish anthem.

I soooo knew there had to have been at least one Kenny Loggins song on the President's IPOD. I'm just suprised it wasn't "Return to Poo Corner"! I wonder if elsewhere on the list there are some song selections by Celine Dion, Clay Akin and Garth Brooks.
Yeah that does shock me that the president is into Joni Mitchell and John Hiatt. It doesn't shock me that he is into John Fogerty. But I have to agree with the management I wonder if he knows what "My Sharona" is about!?

"eroding our grandchildren's retirement benifits"??? Who writes and repeats these inane mantras? Blocking social security reform and privatization is what should be criticized. Dubya should get credit for an incredibly rebounding economy due to his tax cuts, that actually have increased government revenue, while allowing more investment into the private sector.
...but, what do facts have to do with most of the criticism of this man.

The other thing that suprises me is he doesn't have any Mike Love era Beach Boy hits on his ipod i.e. "Kokamo" (sp?)

Cap,
If you want to talk about facts, then it might be appropriate to discuss the facts (or lack thereof) he uses to scare Americans into thinking that Social Security is on the verge of failure. No one is arguing that the system is perfect and that Social Security need not be reformed at all. But Bush plays fast and loose with the very facts you find so precious every time he cites a date that Social Security is on the verge of bankruptcy or declares that "there is no trust fund." Just recently he posed for a photo op next to the filing cabinet that holds the security instruments that make up the "trust fund" and pointed out that since they're just pieces of paper, the government could just choose to stop honoring them at any time. While that's true, the federal government has never made bad on any of its loans. It could just as easily choose not to honor loans from foreign countries or the treasury bills and bonds that are widely circulated in our economy. For that matter, it could also one day announce it no longer represents those little green Federal Reserve Notes you carry around in your wallet. But Bush forgot to mention all those facts. And that is what facts have to do with the criticism of this man.

The man appears to be striving to live inside of a TGIFriday's commercial.

hey cap, lighten up. you don't need to start proselytizing at the mere mention of the president.

Amen, Cap.
Also, he wouldn't need an iPod if he was looking for artists who like him. I can only think of 3 or 4 conservative musicians/groups anyways, which sucks for those of us of the right wing persuasion.

I bet there was pressure on editorial to remove "Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue" by Toby Keith from the list. But it's totally on his iPod. We all know.

As much as I would love to jump on the bashing of Dubya, take it over to a more appropriate venue, ala 1115.org.

Wow. Letting us look at a list of the songs Bush would be listening to... if his iPod were programmed exclusively by the White House Press Secretary (after extensive focus group testing). I feel like I've really been allowed to look behind the curtain on this one.

Jeff,
There are plenty of Bush-loving artists out there, like Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson! Yay!

I love that Joni Mitchell song about how black Americans die younger than the average, so they should support efforts to phase out Social Security.

Rock and roll. Oh and just to add another counterpoint to the privatization argument: does everyone not realize that massive investment into the stock market will create a huge bubble that is bound to burst eventually? Hell, if this privatization thing starts to look like it's going through, I'm downright going to count on it.

this is a way,way better list:

For the record, Bush's aides have now stated that they will remove "My Sharona" in light of its pedophiliac content. Gentlemen, you are truly a credit to your nation.
