Preview Sonic Youth's The Eternal
This is your chance to hear The Eternal's black metal-influenced lyrics and heavy ass weirdo hooks, albeit in supremely truncated form. At first the teaser's a frustrating listen: Each time something lands and sounds promising, it's onto the next snippet. After a while, if you accept it as the patchwork collage it is and dig your feet in some, it does offer insight into what the band's Matador debut will sound like, be about. The word "meditation" comes up a couple times, levitation, a leaky lifeboat, Hollywood Boulevard, anti-orgasm, poison arrows, and the brain police once. As you'll note, the teaser player's from Newsweek ... things have changed a lot since Confusion Is Sex. Pay attention:

haha..that's funny grizzly bear is better than sonic youth a) what kinda stupid fucking name for a band is grizzly bear b) sy have been around forever putting out amazing albums...you can barely prejudge this one b/c you can only hear a portion of a few songs and c) i just checked out this grizzly bear band (cuz who's ever heard of them) on youtube a song called yellow house and it sucked dick nothing original about it sounds like a spinoff of jesus and mary chain nothing close to what sy can do..so until those douchy bands have concieved something more than just a few indie pop albums, fuck off

There are some comments here that are obviously coming from uneducated people, musically. Like, comparing Sonic Youth with Silversun Pickups??? Man, S.P. are so influenced by S.Y. that it is more than obvious. Come on. Also, comparing new albums by Animal Collective and Grizly Bear with new Sonic Youth sounds like highschool topic. I don't mean anything bad by it, but come on, grow up.
If some of you skipped their last albums, than I understand your not knowing their "sort of" new sound.
If you like 80's Sonic Youth, than go and listen to their albums of that time. If you like 90's Sonic, than go and listen. If you like everything they made, listen everything. If you are into experimental music, go figure SYR records. So, thats why they are great band, and no need to compare them with younger bands that haven't arrived to the next period or that have changed their sound yet, or don't know what does that mean anyway.
