Prince Shocked Foo With "Best Of You"

One of the many highlights of Prince's phalically delicious halftime show was also its most confuzzing: Prince using precious medley time to cover Foo Fighters? Granted, it was excellent, but it surprised the best of you -- and the Foo crew, too.

MTV spoke with drummer Taylor Hawkins, who mentioned the Fighters' "Darling Nikki" cover (a B-side to the Australian "Have It All" single), which Prince refused to license for US release, later saying he didn't like their version. But then came Prince's "Best Of You" on Howard Stern's show, and of course last Sunday's cover in the rain. So what's with the sudden Foo love? Hawkins said:

Dude, I have no idea why he did it, but I'd love to find out," Hawkins laughed. "I mean, the thought went through my head that maybe he was doing it as a sort of 'F--- you' to us, or maybe he really likes the song. Either way, it was pretty amazing to have a guy like Prince covering one of our songs — and actually doing it better than we did.

I was watching the game at our producer Nick Raskulinecz's house, and since he's doing the new Rush album, all the guys from the band were there. I mean, I'm outside smoking a cigarette with [Rush drummer] Neil Peart and someone sticks their head outside and goes, 'Uh, dude, Prince is doing your song.'

Mind fuck. Prince has avoided requests to comment on the situation, but you'd be purple in the face before he speaks about it. He's mysterious like that.

Anyway, anybody need a bandana?

neil peart makes that story, as he will make the aqua teen movie. Also, I know it's mtv and all, but everyone knows who neil peart is- don't refer to him as neil peart.
I think like how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop the world will never know why prince did this

The fact that all the guys in Foo had to hang out because their producer is working on the new Rush record makes me like them even more.

I think Hawkins was saying that he and the Rush guys were hanging out at Nick Raskulinecz's place, not he and the Foos.

i think it would be awesome - though unlikely - if prince had really played a foo fighters song to say "fuck you foos!" live on the most popular television event of the year.

sandwiching foo fighters between bob dylan (watchtower, right?) and prince songs is a good way to make foo fighters sound like biz natch es
