Q. Who got fired? A. Some SFGate web dork

Image alt tags are where web nerds hide their true thoughts, or at least the things they want to say to other web nerds, as part of a tradition that goes all the way back to Suck.com, but I think the world's getting wise. It's fine when you label the members of Prussian Blue "Nazi twins", slightly less so when you tag a picture of the Grateful Dead "Q. What did the Deadhead say when his pot ran out? A. Dude, this band sucks!"

Even if it's true.

bwaaa! yet another self-loathing hipster douche who will never feel the joy of being connected to improvised musical moments. one who feels perfectly satisfied listening to mediocre bands that can only reproduce their studio efforts on a stage. boo hoo, my friend, boo hoo.

It's too bad that alt tags don't work in Firefox.

jack, you're the reason why I hate Deadheads as much as the band itself.

Nikole...

You can get the alt commands to work in firefox by installing the Popup Alt extension here: http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/more-info/popupalt

Never much of a Dead fan. The only thing I own is the "Fade to Gray" single, and probably because it was on gray vinyl. But... out in Tucson a few weeks ago, the local listener supported station was playing some Dead live material, and, for the most part, it rocked. I think it was circa '71, and sure enough the band went off on a jam on pretty much every song, but they held it together, and there was always an edge to it. Maybe this was before the drugs etc. dulled that edge. And I saw the "Festival Express" movie a few months ago, and the Dead ('69/'70 I believe) did the song I only know as a radio hit for the Black Crowes, and that too rocked, in particular Garcia's psychedelic guitar solo that closed the piece. So in my own ongoing revisionist book of great Rock Music, the Dead are moving up. Some of that early era live stuff might be worth further investigation.

kallen- that's fine, people like me honestly pity people like you. so... the feeling's somewhat mutual. i can rest easy at night and thank my lucky stars that i'm one of the people who "get it". i'm sorry you hate things which you don't understand. it must be a difficult life to lead.

OK, drewo im glad you are starting to appreciate GD but theres some things that need to be cleared up. theres no song called fade to gray. you seem to have combined the song titles "touch of grey" and "not fade away" but really thats cute, pfff. and another thing, yes the dead rocked, and there will never be another band like them ever. as far as your assumption of the pre drug era dulling the edge theory your dead wrong. i could give you any number of shows from any generation and you see they have always rocked. 60's, 70's 80's and 90's all have their own flavor, you have alot to learn before you should start throwing your opinions around.

Thanks Dave, I sit corrected. It's my own grey matter that's fading away. Must be those edge-dulling drugs. I also take your word that the Dead rocked throughout the whole of their strange trip.

So do I just go straight to "Live/Dead" or check out this new live release? Or check out one of archivist Dave's releases? So much Dead, so little time.

Drewo, you might want to check out Europe '72.

But what do I know, I've been listening to the new Juelz "The new slogan is 'A'" Santana a lot, so clearly, me = horrible music taste. Can't cross genre lines now!

I bet you'd get a lot of mileage out of any of the "Dick's Picks" archival sets.

I always thought Deadheads were harmless, mostly stupid, but harmless. I had no clue they could be such pricks.

There is so much dead to explore you are right about that. you might not like all of it at first but your love will grow and youll be very happy that you found the dead; they will bring you much joy. start out with eroupe 72 or dive into a dicks picks. or go on to www.nugs.net, there you will find alot of free streaming live shows all of them very good.
keep on keeping on.

matt, when theres people such as yourself out there that characterize vast groups of people who are into the Dead as harmless and stupid, yea, some of us will stand up and call you whiny emo kids on your shit.

You're doing far more assuming and generalizing than I am, with this "emo kid" shit you're pulling out of nowhere, you brain-dead dick. You're a pathetic ass and your moronic comments are the only reason I felt inspired to disrespect Deadheads at all today.

I'm sorry, Stereogum, for not being constructive at all or even trying to post something intelligent. Just in a bad mood.

ps: jack, you're one dumb fuck.

This wouldn't be such a dumb conversation if it weren't objective truth that the Grateful Dead's music really does, you know, suck.

See? I said it. If you want to try and argue with me, great, but you're not gonna get anything. Thus no personal attacks are necessary. This ain't LiveJournal, bitches.

heh, bunch a emotional emo kids calling dead heads stupid and saying the dead suck, now thats something you would never expect because the whole world feels the same way about the emo scene

common knowledge has it that the metal kids make fun of indie rock snobs and that indie rock snobs take solace in the fact that they, like everyone else, can make fun of hippies because hippies are just so, you know, dumb and harmless.

seriously, get a fucking life... your snarky little quips on how shitty the Grateful Dead is might impress everyone else on this site who revels in the one-upmanship of how you can out-clever each other, but really, it's just sad and pathetic.

g3k, your opinion means shit and to that extent, so does mine, but let's not be rediculous here. i'm sure i could go over 90% of the obscure bands in your music collection and find that they're obscure for a very good reason.

i must say though, it's hilarious to see how the tears start flowing when you're called out on being the snobby little elitist bitches you are.

and this ends my participation because, well, this is going nowhere. there are always going to be folks like you who need to tear shit down that people enjoy to make themselves feel better about themselves. yet another reason i pity you.

toodles!

I must say I do believe GD were great examples so please, do what Jerry would do...shoot up a heroin/cocaine cocktail and die. Is that punk enough for you? Oh yeah, the punks do it to. They all have something in common! Discuss amongst yourselves.

The dead sucks? How do u explain 5 decades of unbelievable faithfullness to an incredible band by millions worldwide. All you got is they suck. ROlling stones granted Jerry Garcia #14 on the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. Maybe you should read up a little before you shoot your opinions around. Oh yea and for all that believe deadheads are druggies think again. Maybe some are, but I for one dont use drugs and still appreciate their longevity and their amazing musical talents. Maybe they are potheads, but isnt even a "drug". You cant name one band in the last decade who even touches their talent or togetherness. Maybe you think that hippies suck or they smell bad, but the Grateful Dead is an amazing piece of American music history.
