R. Kelly To Help Virginia Tech "Rise Up"

R. Kelly has set aside the Trapped In The Closet hip-hopera (Chapters 13-22 out via DVD this July!) long enough to be touched by, and offer support for, the Virginia Tech tragedy. Kelly's releasing "Rise Up" digitally on May 15th, with Jive contributing 100% of the proceeds to the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund, assisting Va. Tech victims and their families. The AP says that Kelly the ballad after "watching the events unfold on television while he was on tour." Sample lyric:

Rise up, when you feel you can't go on, rise up, and all of your hope is gone, rise up, when you're weak and you can't be strong
Here's a taste of R.'s inspirational balladry...

It's no "Gotham City" off the Batman & Robin soundtrack, but hey. Ooh! Ooh! Rap off: what rhymes with Cho Seung Hui ? ("Ch-oh Sung Hway")

wow, yeah thats so hilarious! somebody with a concious, trying to do something good. lets all laugh at how ironic it is...

stereogum disgusts me with it's snide and vaguely racist entries such as this one.

Can R. Kelly go away, please? I'm sorry, but I'll always think of "I'm Gonna Pee On You" whenever I see R. Kelly. His career is, or should be, over. Even with the possibly good intentions.

its one thing not to like him for what he's done... to say that his career is over is just foolish.

Time to say the most obvious unsaid thing yet: How someone operates in their life rarely, if ever, affects a positive reaction I have to their music. If there's a good song, there's a good song. Simple as that. Music has that "tune" and "arrangement" thing and other things like it that allow it a basic autonomy from the personal life of its creator. Etc., etc. Sorry.

That being said, this seems like it's gonna be another bad inspirational song from R. Kelly. ("We're gonna fight this together," he sings; fight what? Maybe grief? Not a good line considering the context.) Still, the intention's good and I hope it does end up moving people.

i don't understand why this negro has to go and write some crummy song that doesn't mean squat to the average american. how many blacks were killed on that day? need i say more?

let's all sing my song and be proud and stand up in unity to foreign terrorists; home and abroad!

sing it with me mr. imus!

and I’m proud to be an american,
where at least I know I’m free.
and I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

and I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
god bless the usa.

amen!

Yes, he's a child-marrying face-pisser who deserves to be mocked, and yes, his music does, for the most part, make me want to rip my own kneecaps out, but...

if this song or its proceeds can do anything to help ease the suffering of those affected, then it's okay in my book, I guess.

Wow.. This is really bad. i expected better from the self-professed "King of R&B". R. Kelly's been around since 1992, and his career is still on top, what with all the hit singles (Jeezy, Ciara remix, Snoop Dogg and the I'm a Flirt song) he currently has on the radio. You would think he would have tried a little harder to produce something a little less cheesy and catchier to promote genuine sales, not pity from the listener.

conscious/conscience...mispelling doesn't even touch the unbridled insensitivity shown on this blog. How did the Virginia Tech tragedy become a racist forum for people to air such views? Bigots and racists will use any excuse to spew hatred.

Thumbs up to R.Kelly for turning his compassion for those affected into something positive. Shame on the rest of you.

I listened to song and it's great. I was moved. It's just like "A Soldier's Heart" song he made a while back for our war vets. He is an amazing talent. He might be something else outside of music but his music is untouchable. The guy is a legend.

God bless him and God bless America.

Any and everybody can say that R. Kelly is this and he is that, but how many more artists have tried to do anything about the events that took place on that dreadful day. Any will not bring back anybody that tragically died on that day, but it will give the family something and all that will not have been in vain.
