Radiohead Launch "Nude" Site

thubmnail icon: Radiohead Launch "Nude" Site

Nah, we're not talking naked Radioheads (thank god, really). But just when you might've assumed Thom & Co. would run out of In Rainbows angles, they went ahead and created a website that allows you to upload your remix of new old single "Nude," input info about it, create your own personalized widget, and watch with bated breath as folks vote away on the fruits of your GarageBand. As they explain it:

Via Radiohead Remix:

To make remixing easy, the separate 'stems'* from the song are available to purchase from iTunes ... The 'stems' available are bass, voice, guitar, strings/fx and drums. You can mix them in any way you like, either by adding your own beats and instrumentation, or just remixing the original parts.
If you purchase all five 'stems' from iTunes during the first week they're available, you'll be sent an access code to a GarageBand file ready to open in GarageBand or Logic. However, you don't need GarageBand to do a remix, all the stems are in iTunes Plus format and compatible with several music software platforms.
*'stems' are the component parts of the song.

All cool on the "stems" definition? (iTunes is one of the contest's sponsors, by the buy.) You can get more info and upload your work here. Voting ends 5/1 and, as they say, "Radiohead will listen to the best remixes." Right now Holy Fuck is at #1. Maybe the slow-mo "Nude" video will inspire you to defeat them. So you know what you're up against:

Radiohead - "Nude (Holy Fuck Remix)" (MP3)

Of course, in the end, this is promotional -- right, Trent? -- so "they" also mention that the "'Nude" single is out now in the UK on CD, 7" and as a download via XL.

album = free
one song on album split into five pieces = 5 dollars
and the Holy Fuck remix isn't bad but its kind of unfair. Its going to stay number 1 because they're the only recognizable artist up there.

It's really a bummer that they're charging people to remix their song. Trent's going to have a field day with that.

And I agree that the Holy Fuck thing is a tad unfair, but hey - they're entitled to do it as is anyone. And they are a damn good band. Most unknown people really have no chance of 'winning' now, though.

That said: I'm probably going to give it a shot. I just can't help it. Damn you Radiohead!!

I think this pretty well expresses my feelings toward the whole "pay for 5 parts of one of the worst songs on our new album" piece of this whole shin-dig.

If Smashing Pumpkins did this, charging for 5 parts of the one song, there would be a half-page rant about what a cock Billy is.

But this is Radiohead so it's okay.

the only thing I used from the session was thom's voice. built a minimal beat, tons of dark synth stuff.. I'm pretty happy with how it come out - its glitchy/malevolent...
I wanted Burial glitch vocals meets asian horror flick tension. micro edits, intentional superquiet noises. minimal.

Mine doesnt have repetitive song structure, but its short and has little sections.

massive cred to anyone that can name the modular synth filters used / general effects!

From a marketing viewpoint I have to say this is a very effective (although not terribly new) idea and a good way for the band to stay in the light (yeah, like they need to). But as a fan, I think getting people to pay to download the separate tracks really sucks. What's the point ? If they want to get talked about, the more people will take part the better. And if it's about building connection with the audience, the "give me 5$ to remix my song" does exactly the contrary of what the "pay what you want" digital release of In Rainbows achieved. Sure, by now there must be plenty of places where you can get the stems for free, but I don't buy the principle. They might as well pay for Fatboy Slim to put together a nice Big Beat remix. Sorry guys, I will pass on this one.
