Radiohead, Lil Wayne Nominated For Album Of The Year Grammy

thumbnail icon: Radiohead, Lil Wayne Nominated For Album Of The Year Grammy

Remember the 50th Annual Grammy Awards? Alicia Keys duetting with the ghost of Sinatra? Will.i.am rapping nonsense? Album of the Year River: The Joni Letters??? It's easy (and fun!) to make fun of the Grammys, but last year they really deserved it, and viewers voiced their discontent by watching Extreme Makeover instead. For ceremony #51 NARAS shook things up by revealing the nominees in a prime time concert tonight.

The first award's announcement kicked off with a montage of YouTube screens and an acknowledgment that "today it's a digital world, and we're all players in it ... websites connect young artists and fans in a way never before imagined." Which doesn't explain why Katy Perry was snubbed for Best New Artist, but hey that's a promising start. More importantly, Radiohead and Lil Wayne were nominated for Album of the Year. And Foo Fighters played "You're So Vain"? You're full of surprises, 2009 Grammys. Nominees after the jump.

I doubt it Ryan. I mean In Rainbows wasn't nominated for best rock album... it is clear Coldplay has it in their bag.

Radiohead are never up in the Rock category. They are always nominated in the Alternative category, which they are again this year.

Ahh, that category wasn't there when I posted that. Thanks for clarifying, I'm not really up to speed with Grammy noms history. To be honest.

I didn't know Nouns had a cd worth buying, it didn't strike me as such when I had it in my hands so I ended up with a digital copy. I rarely buy cds because they are rarely worth physically owning them.

but hell, in rainbows is way better than viva la vida. and i just can't understand why is house of cards running for best rock song. Reckoner or jigsaw falling into places are a lot better songs..

Robert Plant and Allison Krauss is a great nomination. Grammy voters have a history for the surprise Album of the Year pick, a la O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack, Herbie Hancock. Don't count them out.

Wow... I must say I'm pleasantly surprised by the nominees overall. I'm willing to look over the Jonas Brothers. *I really really really hope In Rainbows wins.* And if it doesn't, it better not be Coldplay. That would piss me off. Viva La Vida was good but it would be a slap in the face to Radiohead if they won. But if say, like, Ne-Yo won, then we could just have a laugh about the Grammys and call it a day, no hard feelings.

Every time I look at the nominations, I see an artist that I would never expect to see. Before it was Menomena, and now it is No Age.

yeah, but neither of those nominations were/are really based on the music, just the package that the music was/is being delivered in...although the menomena really should have won last year....

Is it entirely possible that radiohead got nominated for best album just so that the industry could spit in their face by giving it to coldplay?. Basically telling the major labels to f-off and releasing it themselves was probably not well-received by those higher up in the industry. In this sense the industry has an easy way of f-ing Radiohead back for the way they turned their back on the industry is by giving the best album of the year to what would politely be considered as a "knock-off brand radiohead" or "radiohead lite" (I can think of more appropriate terms). Maybe its just me but with all the Coldplay nominations, it seems like they're being setup for "their night" with one band winning most of the major awards.

Or maybe I'm just paranoid and they give it to robert plant as a make-up for past sins by the academy...

...or...

Maybe, just maybe, the actual music industry genuinely liked both In Rainbows and Viva La Vida? They respect the as-always flawlessly-executed work of Radiohead as well as the successful change-up in sound from Coldplay.

Why is this argument always so polarizing? Am I not allowed to like both Radiohead and Coldplay? And honestly, NOTHING on In Rainbows sounds like anything on Viva La Vida...

Thank God U2 didn't make an album last year.

no way they'll nominate radiohead for best rock album b/c they won't show up to the ceremony. best alternative is an award given in the preshow (or whatever it's called) and so none of those bands will get invited to the show.

Ehh calling one of the songs on In Rainbows boring is just strange to me... because that must mean you would have to think the whole album is boring. Most of the songs are similar tempo and overall style (except the first two which are faster). They kind of blend into one another... I don't see how you can single one out as bad or boring. But whatever. I love House of Cards.

your logic confuses me. Its not that its a slow tempo. All I Need is even slower, and I love it. House of Cards just doesn't go anywhere. It meanders around until it ends. For me, its basically Treefingers with words.

In Rainbows is far from Radiohead's best album and Viva La Whatever is hardly Coldplay's best, either. The 2 rap albums will split the vote. The Krauss/Plant record is pretty amazing. I think it deserves to win.

i REALLY REALLY REALLY hope radiohead doesn't win because i love 'em, and honestly, just don't want that attention drawn to them. as HUGE as they are, there is still quite a bit of element to them that much of the mainstream doesn't know or get and i like it that way. yeah, the days of them not being known are gone, and i can finally point my fingers to my friends who used to make fun of me for liking them in the 90's, but enough is enough.

on the other hand, i feel like if there is one way the grammy's could essentially get a 'sure thing' and not get criticized, second-guesssed, or blasted anymore for their decisions, then picking in rainbows would be the call to easily correct that. ugggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

First off the grammys is an insult to musicians everywhere. The godamn Jonas Brothers, Were'nt they created in the a**hole of MIcheal Eisner and Walt Disney...But that's beside the point. It;s gonna be Lil Wayne(overrated), Jonas Brothers(The new Monkees), and Rascal Flatt(pop not country). It's just a way for the music business to keep everything the same so a truly talented musician or group can't break through
....Also Radiohead digitally released In Rainbows in 2007 but the actual CD came out January 1, 2008...
Even though the Grammy's are a sham, good luck to all the nominees, namely Pop, country, rap, and hip-hop because they'll implode on their own ego if it isn't reinflated with a grammy or award.

if any other album besides in rainbows is chosen for best album of the year it will show just how flawed the grammy's are. In rainbows is clearly the best album, musically, but the other albums may be more popular. Awards should be given to musicians because of their music, not because of their popularity, that's retarded. If Lil wayne win it will show just how retarted and meaningless these awards are.

Honestly, Radiohead is so far from "underground" that I can't even tell you....

In fact, Radiohead has already won 'Best Alternative Album' twice, in 1998 and 2001. Kid A and OK Computer were also both nominated for Album of the Year, but lost to Bob Dylan and Steely Dan. However, in this case, it's pretty fucking clear who deserves the album of the year, at least in my humble opinion.

Winning album of the year isn't going to convert the Lil Wayne fans to Radiohead fans. If anything, it will just put a nice label on Radiohead's already-earned place amongst the all-time musical greats.
