Regina Spektor on Soundcheck

Regina Spektor definitely isn't for everyone... if you slightly dislike the likes of Ani DiFranco or The Dresden Dolls (previously mentioned on the 'gum here and here) you will probably hate Ms. Spektor. Jim describes her as "Ani DiFranco in heat." In spite of, or because of that, I really can't help but like her. I listened to this song several times in a row just because it's that sort of thing.

Regina Spektor - "Poor Little Rich Boy" (MP3 link expired)

Anyway, she's playing live on Soundcheck today at 2 pm on WNYC radio, 93.9 on your FM dial. Or stream it in iTunes.

Also featured is Abigail Washburn, who plays the banjo and supposedly sings in Chinese, though I could find no evidence of the latter in the audio clips available on her website. She's sort of like Sufjan Stevens, but is better at the banjo, and sounds more like Gillian Welch or Alison Krauss than he does.

Before anyone shows up to call me a fucker, I just want to say that I meant that in a good way. "in heat" as in, "with this wicked sexy energy".

In "survival guide to soviet kitsch", it sounds like she's doing an impersonation of fozzie the bear. Do you hear it too?

am i the only one that finds that ani and regina's music have hardly ANYTHING in common? lyrically worlds apart, musically grounded in different feels alltogether

I saw her when she opened for Keane.

Everyone in the audience just laughed at her because you could see her whole underwear and crotch as she sat at her piano in a dress.

She thought the laughing was because people were enjoying her music.

That said, I do like "Us".

I must agree with Wes... I have heard comparisons to Ani as well as Tori, but other than being a female (and in the Tori case she does also play the piano), everything about her style and sound is vastly different. Perhaps it is simply that all 3 of these women have original sounds and they are extremely talented? I'll give you that much.

I just get this badass woman vibe off of it...it's less in the actual music than in the lyrics and the approach.

I know Regina, and she's a fucking mess. This whole little girl vibe she's giving off is annoying as hell. It's so contrived and boring. THAT said, her music's pretty great...

I have heard comments that compared her to Fiona Apple. How in the world those two are alike I have no idea. Love Regina's music, though.

Abigail Washburn is what is wrong with this country and the music industry. She is not a professional musician.

Her voice is amateur. She is not a professional musician, and because she is sleeping with Bela Fleck they are promoting her.

She is not good, or great...she sucks.

The Bluegrass is the issue. She has no voice.
Her playing is mediocre...her singing is not professional.

The music business is crazy. Regina Spektor is terrible, and also unprofessional and amateurish.
I dislike Ani Di Franco. I think that Fiona also sounds mostly like noise.
The amount of noise on the radio is quite annoying. The music industry has no depth and no understanding of beauty or music.
They have lost all touch with reality.
That is o.k , they are losing all their money.
they are self-deluded.
Samson was a little below mediocre, and the rest is way below mediocre.
Nuts is the word and the followers need help.

I don't care about what happens to the sick and dying music industry. They are nobodies who create nothings that last for 15 seconds. The reason Regina has her panties showing and crotch is because she is a slut with no talent, like all the rest...
they all have very little talent, it is all hype...
Please, you have all gone mad.
