Replacements Reunion

Wasn't expecting this. Paul Westerberg, Tommy Stinson, and Chris Mars have recorded two new songs, "Message To The Boys" and "Pools & Dive" for (yet another) Mats retrospective Don't You Know Who I Think I Was?: The Best of the Replacements, out 6/13.

As for a full scale reunion? Don't hold your breath. Billboard quotes Paul:

"There's probably no chance we'll get back together again. It bothered me for like an afternoon but, it did bother me for that long because I was secretly excited and some of them weren't."
Blame Axl.

What I wouldn't give to see them perform "Within Your Reach" live.

I would honestly give up a few toes to see them play "I Will Dare."

"some of them" meaning Chris Mars?

It might be cruel sounding, but it thrills me beyond reason that Slim Dunlap isn't recording on that song. It's about damn time Paul realized that nobody can replace Bob.

do whatever you have to do, paul...

but, please save tommy from all the shit he's been doing lately!

the replacements rule school....

love you forever.

methinks they're just casting about for offers...like headliners at Coachella 2007 (fuck the Smiths)

If the Smiths could get 5 mil, The 'Mats can get paid.

Josh Freese is sitting in on drums.
Rumor was Tommy played bass on Westerberg's "Mono" a few years back, but couldn't get album credit because of his GnR contract.

Dude, there is nothing wrong with Slim!! Bob was great, but I think Slim gets unfairly slammed for Westerberg's "mellow" period (which I am a big fan of for the most part).

And, really, Paul has been playing stacks of 'Mats songs in the past few years. There's a ton of (shambling) .mp3s on his webpage and elsewheres.

Slim is a great guitarist and one of the sweetest guys on earth. He was quoted as saying that he wasn't expecting to be invited but was glad the other guys put aside their differences to do something together. I heard a pretty serious rumor that they were playing in Pomona around Coachella time but i just refused to believe it. Maybe...

there was a rumor going around that the band was set to play the paradise in boston in july. supposedly the date was even booked and everything.

anything could happen.

Does anyone know that sort of country-ish tribute to the Replacements song? I've heard it exactly once and I remember it being good. It was some dude's personal story about seeing the Replacements a bunch of times. (Good post Reggie!)

I would ball a poodle to hear "Can't Hardly Wait" ("Tim" version).

(Yet another) Mats Retrospective? Have there been that many? One by my count, unless you want to go back to Boink! The Smiths have a bajillion of them (tacky badge and an extra track...)

I am psyched by the boxed set/re-release plans, to finally hear some of those old demos - Hard to wave in Handcuffs etc.) get a proper release. Hopefully they'll follow through.

In the upper midwest, where I'm from, the Replacements are religion, the greatest band in the world, whoever was on lead guitar.

Paul's last solo tour (Mono/Stereo) where he was just playing by himself was AMAZING.

I was lucky enough to see the Mats in 89 and again on their last tour....any reunion with them is good news.

If the Smiths are being offered upwards of $5MM to reform, these guys would be lucky to get a $1MM....no disrespect to the 'Mats, I just think the Smiths are a bigger "story".

Bob could play unless the drugs were playing him, which was too often.

Early shows at the 7th St Entry were like no live shows I've seen since.

Check out the vids at the Twin/Tone site: http://www.twintone.com/video/mats/
