Return Of The Mats

The Replacements have another Best Of out next week. This one collects 18 of the band's greatest hits and two new Westerberg songs recorded in Minneapolis late last year.

Paul talks to Newsweek about "Message To The Boys":

"I wrote that, oh shit, I don't know, 13, 14 years ago. I always kept it in my back pocket in case we ever played again. This is something I dread having to divulge, because we have enough weird fans as it is, but it's sort of in honor of one of our more dedicated fans who used to come see us all the time and, eventually, you know, ended up dead. I don't want to encourage that at all, but it was something that affected all of us. We could spend the whole time talking about dead people involved with the band, but we don't want to do that."
Rhino is streaming the whole album. "Message" comes in at 1:00:02. "Pool & Dive" is at 1:03.29.

1st post gives me the opportunity to go off topic. How about some Elvis Costello love for "The River in Reverse" featuring the greatest living songwriter that nobody has ever heard of... Allen Toussaint.

also, RIP Billy Preston

Third post means I'm the one stuck bringing this back on topic.

"Message To The Boys" was phenomenal. "Pool and Dive"...well, it sort of felt like a reject from Don't Tell A Soul. It's good, but not Mats good.

Can't wait until the album comes out.

The track listing isn't bad, given that there are easily another dozen (or two) songs that deserve to be on the CD.

I use 'Let It Be' and 'Tim' as benchmarks for new music. As in, "Why am I wasting my time listening to irrelevant tunes when I could be listening to 'Unsatisfied' and 'Bastards of Young'?"

what Kim said.
(except for the can't wait until the album comes out part. I'm not picking this up for two tunes. I'll wait for box/re-issues, etc.)

anyone know why Chris Mars didn't play drums on the new tracks?

Peruse the Newsweek article - he showed up for the session, but he just doesn't drum anymore. He's a painter.

Hey, speaking of the tracklist, how come Can't Hardly Wait and not The Ledge? For shame, Rhino!

C'mon folks, join in! let's turn this into a re-run of the Paste list debacle!

OK, I'll join in the re-run of the Paste list mayhem:

Replacements best-of has no "Androgynous". Thus, best-of is no good.

Also, they passed over the best tune on "Sorry Ma", which is of course "I'm In Trouble".

ok, i know us old Mats fans can argue this stuff endlessly but, i think they nailed this greatest hits for the post-Hootenanny years.

But for STINK and SORRY MA, I think they completely blew it. "Kids" is great, though, glad they put on that one instead of "F*** School."

"Go" on STINK is amazing.
So is "Johnnys Gonna Die" on Sorry Ma, and, as mentioned before, "Im In Trouble."

I would have put on "We'll Inherit the Earth" instead of "Achin To Be" but...whatever. At least there is only one song from that wretched last album.
