Sad news. Rest in peace.

And you know what? It's really sad to see how people are just gossiping and saying shit about him now that he's gone. He definitely was controversial, but c'mon. He was never that bad. And the person who suffered the most from his behavior was himself. He had issues, but he tried to deal with them. In fact he was a lot like Robert Downey, Jr. in the pain he went though and drug issues he had.

Too bad he was never able to overcome them.

If ODB were not a hip-hop star and were not black, nobody would make an issue of any of it. Look a Jerry Garcia? That guy abused himself and his body just as bad, and he's revered. Ditto with Robert Downey, Jr. He goes into rehab, stars in a so-so movie, and everyone is fawning over the brilliant struggle he's gone through. And even Courtney Love. The amount of people who trip over themselves to defend and excuse her behavior is a bit sick. Even Kurt Cobain. He was brilliant, but he was a self-obsessed drug addict who killed himself after he became a father and left his only daughter to have Courtney as a mom. How many people really speak out about that?

But ODB dies, and all of the sudden people are jumping on his case and don't even have the basic courtesy of at least paying simple last respects. Everyone else can type in their gossip in conspiracy theories yet not one other person can simply pay respects?

If you're white, have a drug problem and personal issues, you're noble. If you're not white. All bets are off. Sad and tragic on many levels.

I don't see how one person saying that ODB's children will be scarred was "making a big deal out of it" or "jumping on his case." I'm still trying to figure out why Justin's comment deserved a lecture. But since we're giving lectures...

Honestly, do you really think that the majority of people raise up Courtney Love or Kurt Cobain as heroes? I guess we're hanging in different crowds, but I think most adults would agree that what Cobain did/Love does to that kid is tragic. I feel sympathy for people with drug problems and do believe that they are victims to drugs. But it doesn't mean I can't acknowledge that their children are victims, too.

And it doesn't mean I need to "pay respects" to a man who contributed to the world little besides bigotry, arrogance, and hate. I feel for his family and his 13 children. But here's why I'm not shedding too many tears over this man. Not because he's black. Because this was his contribution to the world:

The post I was refering to argued that people romanticized Cobain's overdose but then criticized ODB, because he was black. I think racism has nothing to do with labeling him a clear misogynist enamored of violence. Just look at his lyrics.

I don't think that many adults revere Kurt Cobain because of his drug problems. I do think that many adults would describe Kurt Cobain's troubles as tragic, and I don't think that those same adults would describe ODB's problems the same way.

My Opinion.

I think some of you are missing ODB's contribution to not only hip hop, but music...

ODB never gave a shit about what other people thought. He only cared about being "real." His image was not something that a record label produced. He really was that dirty and stinkin'! That was how he lived his life. ODB didn't care about making sense, rhyming his words, or impressing the masses. His only concern was bringing energy to music. Not only was his style completely unique, but it also acheived something that no other artist has been able to do: He is comical yet hard at the same time! When you listen to him you want to laugh and kick some ass at the same time! That might not appeal to many of you, but think about it...who else is able to do that?

One word: Original.

ODB was something original, and it's very sad that some people are actually thinking of him now when he's been selling tapes and contributing to hip hop for years. ODB wasn't much of a role model, but we don't have too many role models nowadays. ODB was a role model to hip hop, an original off-the-wall emcee. I'd say that ODB was a victim of his own music, meaning, all the erroroneous and bad things that were in his songs was his downfall in life. ODB was a prime example of making mistakes. He was victim of society, race has nothing to do with this, ODB was teaching the listeners of hip hop right from wrong through his music and death. In all actuality, ODB was a role model and a hero to hip hop. Wu-Tang Forever.

If ODB had been white, comments like "good riddance" would be fewer and farther between. A lot of white people don't like black people. Oh, in theory they're not racist, but they don't go out of their way to befriend us. We ask for too much. We complain a lot. We're so violent. It's no surprise to some of the people who posted to this page that a black man fathered 7 children, because isn't that all those people do is have sex? And they don't work, and they're on welfare and my tax dollars and blaaaargh. It's easier to believe the stereotype than do any work to refute it.

Cobain was no more of a tragic figure than Russell Jones. He self-medicated, married an abusive harpy, and put himself in a position he couldn't live with, at all. Yes, he never wanted to be famous - so rather than leave the band, he shot himself. Committing suicide when you have a toddler at home isn't tragic, it's selfish and unforgivable. Don't laud Kurt as a hero. Point him out as a person who started out with no opportunities, gained some, and didn't utilize them.

Dr. Rice is looked down upon because she is an "uncle tom". Wanna talk about a Black role model???? Condi enrolled at Colorado University when she was 15. FIFTEEN years old. She had her masters degree at 20, and her .. yes.. don't be shocked... her PHD in her mid 20's. SAD aint it?

Wanna talk about coming up? The soon to be Secretary of State grew up in poverty, and segregation. She is from BIRMINGHAM, Alabama. Wanna talk about coming up in the game? How about a Black woman rising out of poverty in the segregated South, and becoming... yes don't be shocked again...
