You can download his "1979" at iTunes, but we don't recommended it.

Well, I wasn't exactly down with the first version to begin with. Damn Corgan and his whiiiiin-eeeeeey vocals.

Seb--by beautiful, you mean suck...right?

I'm open about musical tastes, but Billy Corgan was, is and will always be a terrible singer/songwriter. Psuedo-angst should only get you so far.

Justin, you obviously are no musician. Therefore, you have no legitimacy in saying whether or not Billy Corgan (or any artist) is or isn't a good SONGWRITER. For 17 years now, Corgan (despite his SOMETIMES, that's right, SOMETIMES whiney-sounding voice) has been arguably the BEST and most creative singer/songwriting guitarist of our generation.

Most people overlook his and the Pumpkins' versatility (all the genres they covered)and Corgan's overall prolific songwriting nature (though Ryan Adams and Ani DiFranco have showed that can't always be a great thing). All the different sounds he produces from the guitar (and effects pedals) from GISH to his latest solo disk is simply amazing.

TRUE Pumpkins/Corgan fans know what I'm talking about.
Anyone who thinks SP were just "pseudo-angst" doesn't know what they're talking about.

I have yet to hear it cuz I don't have Itunes, but it can't be good if Rob doesn't even have the lyrics right!

Rob Thomas covering my favorite 1990s band is WEIRD to me, but I say that if he's gonna cover one Pumpkins song, it should be "LUNA" from SIAMESE DREAM. I don't know why I think that - maybe it's the strings!

PS Anyone besides me remember downloading or bootlegging Pavement's short (joke of a) cover of "1979"? I love Pavement, but that wasn't exactly a career highlight.

I don't recommended it either. Billy Corgan sucks a whole lotta appendage these days so maybe a Rob Thomas/Santana/Bill Corgan song will come out soon.

Chuck, I am a musician (not that has any bearings on the subject) and I have every right to express my opinion about Corgan. You can like him if it makes you happy, but don't confuse your admiration of Corgan for talent. Corgan has never had an ounce of talent. He wrote the same song a 1,000 times and did what few musicians do best--sold his image. He is full of himself, and that went a long way at one time. Of course, it was his and the Pumpkins undoing as well.

"Corgan has never had an ounce of talent. He wrote the same song a 1,000 times.."

Am I the only one who finds this statement ridiculous? Oh, I forgot it comes from Justin "the musician", i guess that makes him right. I am not going to even address the absurd "selling his image" rubbish.

Sure, Corgan's latterday sins (of which we are all very aware) have tainted his and the Pumpkins' image, but how someone without "an ounce of talent" can make a great record like Siamese Dream is beyond me.

Thanks Matt for pointing out Justin's O'Reilly/Hannityish comments about Corgan. Some of them are so ridiculous that they should be removed from Stereogum immediately.

I loved the "latterday sins" comment of yours on Corgan by the way, even though I am not sure of exactly what you're referring to (but Billy blaming James for the break-up of SP was his biggest sin, in my humble opinion).

The only kind of talent you (Justin) could possibly question is not Corgan's, but that "mean-spirited drug addict who refused to get help" (according to Billy). That would be D'Arcy (although it takes at least SOME talent to sing and play those bass lines to "Rhinoceros" at the same time). She was ultimately EASILY replacable by the superior MELISSA AUF DER MAUR, as u all know.
No question about the talent of Corgan (and his creative genius, which is comparable to the likes of Beck and Tom Morello, only Billy has way more material, even if it includes some "latterday" duds), or the talent of his most recent and former bandmates.

heck, Billy wrote a few columns for Guitar World, produced records for Ric Ocasek, ex-girlfriend/junkie Courtney Love, Marilyn Manson, wrote some weird but cool heavy shit for the Ransom soundtrack, worked and toured with New Order, helps young bands like Breaking Benjamin and Sleeping At Last...I could go on and on (TRUST ME).

"Not an ounce of talent" huh? What a joke. I bet you (Justin) aren't even 20 years old. That would explain a whole lot.

A) I said being a musician had no bearing on my opinions and questioned why Chuck brought it up.

B) I'm well over 20 years of age. I grew up when the Pumpkins were considered the second coming.

C) Helping bands like Braking Benjamin and Courtney Love only futhers my point that crap gravitates towards crap. Just because Corgan wrote songs that helped you deal with breaking up with your only high school girlfriend and made you feel like being a complete doofus was cool. don't let that askew the real point: Billy Corgan is a nobody with an ego. I wouldn't have so much of a prolbem with Corgan if he kept his ego in check, or at the very least kept his mouth shut. He blames everyone else for his problems like a grown baby. Suck it up, Corgan, and be a man.

D) Ouch, comparing my opinions to O'Reilly and Hannity--if I were a Republican or a Democrat I might be hurt. Stop playing childish games. This is a place where people express their opinions openly and freely. I said Corgan was crap and then everyone decides to jump on me to defend their hero? Ugh. And Corgan is nowhere as talented as Beck (which pains me to say for different reasons) and Tom Morello isn't talented so much as a experimenter with guitar feedback. Much like Corgan, Morello has made the same sounds for years.

Okay, it was like a challenge. I HAD to listen to Rob Thomas's cover and it's horrible! Just horrible. Anyway, you guys should quit arguing because you're never going to agree with each other. Wait! I think we can all agree that Rob Thomas sucks :) Go here to listen to Pavement's live cover: http://everybodycares.blogspot.com/2006/01/saturday-is-for-covers-yes-theyre-back.html. It's quite nice.

hmmm, i dun get it. so if Corgan has NO talent, why there are ppl covering his work ? hmmm..

hmm. if Corgan has NO talent, why would magazines editor would label him as one of the most influental song writer musician of our time?

hmm. if corgan has NO talent, why would SPIN magazine rated Siamese Dream no. 41 out of 100 albums from 1985 - 2005 ? ( 41 out of 100 in 2o years, that's very good )

same sound ? same song? hmmm, if you pay closer listen to their albums, u would realize, ALL album sounded differently, esp. if you listen to ADORE and Mellon Collie..

anyways, i dun mind u giving opinions, but better be quality ones, other than just saying " he sucks " , " he have no talents ", coz these are words we say when we were in 5th grade.

yeah well corgan seemed important to me at 13.....but at 23 i can't see anything i liked about his music.

although i must say he cops much more flack than he deserves, i mean, even back in the day the pumpkins copped shit 4 'selling out from the chicago indie crowd'....yet much bigger bands such as Nirvana and Pearl jam have never sustained so much on going bias.

come on its not as if he's fred durst or axel rose.....

Billy Corgan was as "big" as Axl, and since Axl had lost a voice and charisma in 00's, he's (Billy) a definite number one. Of coarse he's a nobody, so is anybody. My humble recommendation: If you only use your brain to percieve The Pumpkins music, you wouldn't be able to hear anything except your mind mumbling.

Apply the same recepie for listening to Pearl Jam and Nirvana, and perhaps you'll find out why they don't get any credit. (In my case, Nirvana was boring in all, and Pearl Jam had no melody)

...wouldn't sell Tonihgt, tonight, nor Today to MTV for coverings.

All in all a cutting edge musician.

What the hell is this about Billy Corgan writing the same thing 1,000 times?

Rocket sounds nothing like Zero, which sounds nothing like Tonight Tonight, which sounds nothing like Ava Adore, which sounds nothing like Heavy Metal Machine.......I could go on, and on >.>

Trying to sell his image? He admits it was an image......it was a character he played......just like Ronnie James Dio plays a character......Dio's nothing like he is on stage >.>

The only angst was in Mellon Collie.....and when other bands started tuning their guitars to sound like Corgan's, and jumping on the angst band wagon, the Pumpkins got heavier, noisier, more electronic, and digital-sounding. The songs on Adore, Machina, and Machina II are gothic/sci-fi themed.

Listen to something else besides Bullet With Butterfly Wings, and Disarm please >.>

Billy corgan?

billy? C'mon, you really need another reason to hate a grown man that calls himself "Billy"? If you like billy corgan, let's see you spell the word "Judgment" WITHOUT googling it.
