Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame's Class Of '81

Congrats to first-time ballot bands R.E.M. and Van Halen: you're going to Cleveland! The Hall has spoken, choosing those bands -- along with Patti Smith, The Ronettes, and Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five -- for induction at the March 12th ceremony in NYC's Waldorf-Astoria hotel. The Dave Clark Five, Chic, Joe Tex didn't make the cut (again).

Along with a tribute to Atlantic Records pioneer Ahmet Ertegun, look forward to performances from the inductees. No prob, mostly ... but what's gonna go down with Van Halen? Diamond Dave and Hagar brawl? Maybe inventor Eddie will break out the shred machine (which we like to call the "Shreddie Van Halen").

Does anyone think Thom Yorke will induct Stripe and company? Makes sense to me...

It's gonna be Eddie and Alex at the podium, no one else, no performance; saying no one deserves the induction honor but them.

Thom won't induct REM - he's too much of a shrinking violet unless he's riled up about something. Bono will induct REM. Stipe will induct Patti.

chris martin might induct stipe, he's worked with him before, and he seems like the person that would do it.

REM is obviously going to be inducted by Mase. If you think otherwise you need to brush your teeth more often.

I'll be crossing my fingers for a Stipe/Smith duet on "E-Bow the Letter" even though VH-1 or whoever broadcasts it would probably cut the performance.

Until KISS is in the Hall of Fame, why should we honestly pay any attention? For starters, without KISS there probably is no Van Halen. For about 80 million other reasons, check out KISS' record sales.

James Taylor-Yes. Ace Frehley-No.

What a joke.

I believe Michael Stipe will be the new singer on the next Van Halen tour and they will be playing Chronic Town in it's entirety. Gregg Allman will front REM , Peter Buck will form Grandmaster Flash and the Minus Five and Patti Smith will become the "Fourth Ronette". That's what Jann Wenner told me.

Annie, the only criterion is having an album coming out 25 years ago, and having some sort of an influence, which I guess van halen had, or the drive by truckers (http://www.archive.org/details/dbt2006-11-25.flac16) and belle and sebastian (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBNsB_NzFn4)wouldn't be covering them. I do think that rem, grandmaster flash (first rap song with a social message)and the ronettes had more of an impact, and I'm not exactly sure about patti smith.

Without Alice Cooper there is no KISS.
I can't believe he's not in yet.

They should just admit Nirvana and Pearl Jam now, then close admission to the Hall of Fame. R.E.M. is the last consensus band. What's the Hall of Fame going to do from the mid-'80s forward, when "Classic Rock" fossilized and real rock music became ignored by the mainstream? Do you think Husker Du, the Replacements, X, Meat Puppets, Minutemen, Fugazi, Soundgarden, Sleater-Kinney, Pavement--let alone all the English post-punk bands--you think any of them are getting in the Hall?

Obviously not, if it's taking this long to induct the Stooges, the Dolls, and Television. And who will they induct from the '80s? Billy Idol? Bon Jovi? G'n'f'n'R, of course, Metallica, Green Day for crying out loud, Run D.M.C. and Public Enemy probably, then maybe Alanis for the ladies?

It's not the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it's the "Museum of the 'Rolling Stone'-Approved Classic Rock Era." And maybe not a bad collection on those terms, but as of this year, they are officially out of their depth, and can't be trusted to curate rock music as it developed in the "alternative years." After this, we need our own Hall of Fame.

Despite his extensive contributions to the Four Seasons, Joe Long remains the only member of the group's “definitive line up” not inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Carol, you are absolutely right. KISS and Alice(along with all other honorable mentioned)have to be inducted for the RRHOF to mean anything.
