Rock Hall '06 Nominees

The R&R HOF committee, which hates every band that debuted in 1981, has announced its new inductees:

  • Black Sabbath (eighth time's a fucking charm!)
  • Miles Davis
  • Sex Pistols
  • Blondie
  • Lynyrd Skynyrd
  • Do they still do those drunk Paul Schaefer-supported superjams at the end of the night? 'Cause this one would be totally awesome, in an unlistenable some-of-us-are-dead sort of way.

Ceremony takes place 3/13 at the Waldorf-Astoria, presumably airing on VH1 (with some bleeps and/or subtitles for Ozzy's speech) a few days later. That's assuming Ozzy shows up. In 1999, he wrote to the Hall: "Just take our name off the list. Save the ink. Forget about us. The nomination is meaningless, because it's not voted on by the fans. It's voted on by the supposed elite for the industry and the media, who've never bought an album or concert ticket in their lives, so their vote is irrelevant to me. Let's face it, Black Sabbath has never been media darlings. We're a people's band and that suits us just fine." Then the bloody dog shit in his fucking protein shake again. "Sharrrrrrrrrrrrrrrron."

That's quite the diverse list. The jam would be awesome/hilarious. Hopefully, Ozzy will do something dumb.

This is great news! Two bands got voted in that I thought the industry voters were too out of touch with reality to recognize for their influence on rock & roll: Sex Pistols and Lynyrd Skynyrd, whose continued touring has finally paid off (I guess). Both bands' inductions were way overdue.
Miles Davis was a no-brainer, and Blondie was a given now that The Pretenders got voted in last year.

I'm still confused and a bit upset that Motley Crue and REM didn't get nominated, since they both had their debut recordings released in 1981, I believe (though REM's was an EP, the legendary Chronic Town EP).

However, I need some clarification here: Do the rules state that artists can't be nominated until 25 years have passed since their first full-length album was released? or first recording (which could by anything, like a single or an EP)?

Nonetheless, this is a great list of inductees, and Skynyrd's induction speech is guaranteed to be on the dramatic/emotional side, not unlike Ozzy, who will no doubt evoke/mumble some different and not so friendly emotions towards the music industry at the March ceremony.

How interesting it is that these inductees are announced early this year and that Sabbath gets in after receiving the UK Hall of Fame award (VH1 had aired the show over the weekend).
Things that make you go Hmmm.

Sex Pistols and Black Sabbath, both well deserving of nominations...and induction.

I have most of Miles recordings...not one of them is anything close to rock 'n roll. He hated rock 'n roll.

Skynyrd? If I'm not mistaken, the Allman Brothers were making much more influential "Southern rock" and improvisational jam music years before Skynyrd.

Blondie...tough call...don't think they changed the face of music other than being the first punk/new wave band to "go disco" in an attempt to sell records (Heart of Glass.) Their first 2 albums are excellent, and I always loved Clem the drummer.

P.S. If you really love rock 'n roll, boycott Sony/BMG/Columbia, and all copy protected cd's this holiday season.

At least the Pistols got in. I got pissed at the '02 nominees.

Why the hell should Miles Davis be inducted? He was a great jazz composer and arranger and a good trumpet player but really, the shit he did when he started hanging out with rock musicians sucked. I mean fusion is shit. That's an almost implacable rule. I'm so fucking sick of hearing his name thrown around by cool kids. When I hear an indie rocker say "I was really influenced by John Coltrane" it makes me want to vom.

Give it to Sabbath or Blondie. Skynyrd is the devil. And not in a cool way.

    And these are my opinions.

Who says that changing the face of rock is a good thing? Name one good band influenced by Nirvana.

i think how influential an artist or band is or was is the basis for nominations. at least it should be.

anyway its not the rock n' roll hall of fame anymore. miles davis is joining aretha franklin and solomon burke and a shitload of motown, doowap, r&b, gospel, and other artists who arent "rock n' roll". so fucking what. miles is great. he deserves to be in there too. and i agree that indie bands name-dropping jazz greats that they sound nothing like is horrible. stop being pussies, we know you're trying to sound like interpol.

oh, and the allman brothers have already been inducted.

Any real music fan must respect jazz indeed... but can't we put Miles in the JAZZ Hall of Fame? I assume such a thing exists, as there is a Hall of Fame for every effing thing under the sun.

Get mad if you want, but jazz-rock fusion is just jazz with an electric guitar in it somewhere.

    Well said, jed2.

Rant #1: Dumbasses buy a couple Miles Davis records just so they can join the cool party and throw his name around. I'm sick of hearing ignorant hipsters discuss "Kind of Blue." And of course, to join the cool Miles party, you have to unquestionably believe that he was the greatest jazz musician who ever lived. Nevermind that most of these people couldn't even NAME another jazz trumpeter (OK, maybe Chuck Mangione).

Rant #2: I don't understand why most of you here are happy to see the Sex Pistols on this list. I hope you people ARE aware that their pre-fabricated image would scoff at the idea of a rock n' roll HOF even EXISTING, let alone being inducted into it. Their whole schtick was they hated what rock n' roll represented; but of course it was just a front to sell records. Do you people even read books or liner notes?

Oh, and The Sex Pistols' music was crap. It was listenable crap - I kinda like it - but it was crap.

Rant #3: "Any real music fan must respect jazz?" Whatever. "Any real music fan" can like and/or respect what they choose to like and/or respect. You don't make the rules, fella. I personally respect jazz - I played it for 15 or so years - but if someone were to tell me I "must respect this kind of music or I'm not a REAL fan," I'd tell them to, uh...go away.

No Billy, I'm with you on the whole Sex Pistols arguement. They were a band about the "attitude" of punk. Not really punk music. They never really cared to grasp on political issues and basically sang all glitter and no substance.

I hope Blondie or Sabbath gets it. Ozzy can flip em the bird. Or eat one...

Johnny Rotten is a character. Nothing more. Whatever he said about what the Pistols stood for is a lie; a lie that collapsed in itself and formed PiL after the facts. But who cares? Both were great bands, regardless of whatever bones you have to pick about their music.

And Chuck Mangione played the flugelhorn, not the trumpet.

As someone who can rattle off a list of more than ten trumpeters/coroneters, I have to say that Miles Davis is still near the top. And Kind of Blue is still a fanatastic album. Honestly, if "ignorant hipsters" are going to have to pick one album to tout, I'm fine with it being Kind of Blue. If it bothers you so much that they get "jazz cred" for dropping that name, why don't you start dropping lesser known names like Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, or Kenny Dorham. See I just did it right there. If that makes you feel better, then I say do it.

I played jazz for 8 years myself. I am a "real" musician. I play indiepop now. I got bored with jazz because I was a bass player and I hated soloing. To a lot of jazz musicians Miles Davis is not considered important for his playing, but for some of his compositions, and his knack for discovering new talent. In the composition dept., Kind Of Blue holds up well, but not too long after that is where he turns into a fusion hack. Sometimes I think he went that way because he realized that his chops weren't really good enough to compete with the guys coming up at the time.

Anyway, I abandoned jazz because it's museum music. It reached maximum musical sophistication around 1960 and it can't go anywhere else new as far as I'm concerned. The fact that it has cache among non-jazz people now is only, to me, proof of its codification by the mass-marketing hive. Miles Davis being inducted into the R&R HoF is little more than a pretentious glop of dreck ejaculated by a committee of bloated, deluded business people.

Does anyone know of a website that lists all of the artists who were on the nominations list this year? If REM was in fact eligible for induction, I can't begin to understand how any of the five inductees got in ahead of them. They were one of the leading bands to take alternative music to a wider audience, not by attempting to be commercial, but by creating great music that the music public eventually began responding to. If REM aren't first-ballot hall-of-famers then the whole voting process should be dismantled and corrected.
