Rock 'N' Roll Hall Of Fame Class Of '82 Nominee List

Earlier this year, the R&R HOF welcomed R.E.M., Van Halen, Patti Smith, Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five, and the Ronettes to its hallowed Cleveland digs, and the time has come to announce the shortlist for next year's induction ceremony. We laid out a nearly comprehensive list of those eligible a few months back, which included the estimable and worthy likes of Joan Jett, Def Leppard, Alice Cooper, Cocteau Twins, Heart, Deep Purple, Duran Duran, Pat Benatar, Rush, Yes, Genesis, ELO. So who among them made the cut?

NONE OF THEM! Here's your list of nominees (via Rolling Stone):

Madonna
Beastie Boys
The Dave Clark Five
Leonard Cohen
Afrika Bambaataa
John Mellencamp
The Ventures
Donna Summer
Chic
Don't mean to hassle, HOF, but way to consistently snub every prog band that ever mattered. Not saying Chic doesn't deserve it, but rattle off the academy's notable omissions.

Wow, I certainly hope the implication is that R.E.M. didn't matter. Cause that would be, how do you say -- wrong. Although I agree they are the exception when it comes to HOF inductees, and not the rule.

I can't believe that Metallica didn't make it! What on earth?

Over at Future Rock Hall, they predicted a few of these nominees.

I always felt the moody blues deserved to be there, along with ELP and every other prog band.

R.E.M. was already inducted. They weren't snubbed.

"Don't mean to hassle, HOF, but way to consistently snub every prog band that ever mattered."

Thus, if R.E.M. wasn't snubbed (as you say, it was not), the implication is that it was a prog band that didn't matter, or it wasn't a prog band at all, both of which are wrong.

what a sad, shitty and harribly boring list.

madonna is a pop culture institution, and an obvious shoe-in.

hip hop acts placed in the hall's "rock and roll" context are made to appear as mere footnotes in the wacky comic-strip offshoot from the great rock and roll tree.

does surf rock really deserve any sort of mention? can't you just insert "beach boys" and that pretty much sums up any contribution from that front (and then some? i mean, the post-pet sounds work in particular eclipses any sort of twangy-guitar speedwork, right?)?

chic and donna summer are literal one-hit wonders, and everytime the hall does this they further remove themselves (were they ever there?) from a valid critical vantage.

The obligatory post:

1. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is as relevant and legit as mainstream radio.

2. Sonic Youth is not being inducted? Uhhh.... aside from the fact that they deserve it, don't you think the R&R Hall of Fame would as least want to feign street cred?

Leonard Cohen is the only noteworthy artist on the list; but he should have been inducted years ago.

@ kevin r:

despise if you must, but to characterize Donna Summer as a one-hit wonder is seriously wrong and historically incorrect. us fags at the boite understand it's time to give disco it's due, and recognizing ms. Summer is really recognizing G. Moroder, godfather to today's electro-everything...

i too would prefer SY, but still....

Joan Jett was robbed! Besides staring The Runaways with Lita Ford (that all teenage and all female, very influential band of the 70's), she has rocked solo ever since and she's still at it. Has anyone seen her video for AC/DC? What a kick ass song!

dick sha-ne-ne,

yes yes, i realize she had numerous "hits," but to my taste, these disco by the numbers songs are rote and mind-numbingly bad. "Love to Love You" is hot, but "Bad Girls?" "On the Radio?" even my inner gay is shuddering.

but i totally agree with you on the producer tip. i give props to madonna for longevity and her chameleon-like ability to molt for the masses, but shouldn't we really be sticking jellybean in the hall? moroder was to disco as jellybean is to mid-80's NY pop.

Donna Summer fan here! Donna became popular due to her disco tracks, but she has numerous rock tracks on her roster. How many rock tracks does Madonna have? Chic? Ofcourse, good music is all relative so it's expected to hear others not liking the music of other artists, but come on. Donna has won rock awards, so she definitely deserves to be inducted.

How the band YES as not been inducted is beyond me! I have seen them several times over the years most recently on November 21, 2008 and they were fantastic. They played as tight as they did back in the 70's when I saw them for the first time at Madison square garden. If all of their accomplishments are taken into considerdation then it is not realistic not to have them in the Hall of Fame!
