Roger Waters Shows His Dark Side
Following the news that Roger Waters wants peace in the Middle East, the Pink Floyder has announced his summer tour will include a complete run-through of Dark Side Of The Moon.
Elaborate staging is promised, designed by Mark Fisher, complete with projections, and a full, 360 degree quadrophonic sound system.Projections of The Wizard Of Oz we can only hope.
Stereogum never bothered to, but have any of you taken the time to listen to Floyd's '73 opus while viewing the classic film on mute? Did you conclude the synchronicity must be intentional? Were you high at the time?
What's the lyric that matches up when one of the Munchkins hangs himself?

Some friends and I did that once, but we didn't have a copy of The Wizard of Oz on hand, so we used Raising Arizona instead.
The synchronicity was pretty impressive. Of course, since the album came out well before the movie, we can only conclude that this was an intentional move by the Coen Brothers.
It's also possible we were really drunk at the time.

it works. it's pretty neat, but i don't know about intentional. the movie's longer than the album too, so when i started it again the sync seemed to have disappeared. not sure about the lyric, and is that story really true, or another one of those urban myths, like the ghost child in the window in 3 Men & a Baby?
Score = 0
It actually works, to an extent. There are some peculiar instances of the lyrical content matching the visuals. However, given the length of the album, it only works for the first 45 minutes or so - it doesn't continue to work when the album's repeated.
And, no, I wasn't high, but I was drunk. We ended up spending the rest of the night trying to find "the retarded munchkin" that my friend was obsessed with.

The hanged munchkin is an urban myth.
The retarded munchkin, on the other hand, was a product of my friend's beer-addled brain. It was actually just a munchkin making a funny face in one shot.

When i was a student at SVA they actually had a screening in the amphitheather. And it totally worked. (yeah i was stoned but so what?) I'm surprized youtube....wait , let me check. ok here ya go

one of the munchkins hanged themselves??? what? missed that part.

They did that experiment at a local independent movie theater by me a year ago. It was much more entertaining than I had been planning. There were some scenes that worked really well at the beginning but were purely coincidental.
Anyway..they played all of Wish You Were Here for the second half of the film (since DSOFTM is only 40 minutes long)and in my opinion Shine on You Crazy fit better than anything on Dark Side.
But then again..I'm a snob.

Munchkin hanging himself is widely known as an urban myth. Sorry to mislead you; trying for a joke there.
I LOVE that the sync is up on YouTube.

how crazy is it that someone thought of combining the two?
what i mean is the first time someone ever tried to sync them, that boggles my mind.
like did some stoner say "whoa man lets watch WOO and listen to DSOTM at the same time"

So you all gave the Wizard of Oz thing a try? Bunch of bloody college hippies.
Oh wait, I tried it too. It works I think.

You know what works better? Playing rap while watching televangelists on mute.

I don't know... it seemed pretty on queue to me. My favorite part was "Money... get back", when all of the munchkins jumped back. I completely believe that the synchronization was intentional.

Somewhere in my pile of things that I've "backed up" from the Internet ;-) I have a full-blown DVD of Wizard of Oz that has DSOTM as one of the alternate audio tracks in addition to the normal audio. It also has an audio track that is a mix of the original audio with DSOTM mixed. That one is pretty cool, too. I wasn't stoned when I watched it.
A good friend of mind from college used to advocate watching Tron while listening to the 40-minute version of "Blue Room" that came with early pressings of the Orb's UFOrb that had a bonus second disc. That was before I'd ever heard of the Wizard of Oz sync! I'm certain he was stoned for that...

I'm a believer; I've watched "The Dark Side of the Rainbow" several times. I got so bad, my daughter's first three times watching "Oz" was synched up.
"Truman Show" and "The Wall" have some moments, as well...

it definately works but you have to have it exactly right... or else its off. pretty cool thing though.

It works. The more interesting mashup is Alice in Wonderland with the Wall. It is incredible. The Magic Lantern Theater in Isla Vista, CA has a screening planned for May 12 with a 35mm print of Alice!

You know what definitely does NOT work? Today when I went down the pub to watch the Newcastle v. West Brom football match and they had half the TVs showing some bloody rugby match (the other half showing Newcastle) but somehow the fookin egg-chasers won out in terms of audio so we had to listen to the platehead commentators call the rugby whilst trying to watch the beautiful game on the telly and it was a disorientating fooking nightmare. Do not try this. Espesh not stoned...

"egg chasers", haha.
cutting the sound on the Toon should be some sort of criminal offense.

I was never stoned, but my friends and I got confused. We just heard that you're supposed to play the record "the second time the lion roars" and we were unclear as to whether or not the guy was talking about the MGM Lion or Cowardly Lion. We tried both be we didn't really notice anything significant, besides that part in "Breathe" when he says "look around" and Dorothy looks back.

Oh, and anyone else notice that no one is talking about Waters' tour? How's he going to do it without David singing? We he take the leads himself?
I hope it's better than that video of the Wall tour. Sure, it's entertaining, but Roger's mullet is embarassing.

It's a fairly entertaining thing to watch and there's a string of pretty interesting synchronizations. But, I suspect that if you watched "Silence of the Lambs" while playing Deep Purple's "Machine Head" you'd probably find some of the same kind of things. In any case, I think it is silly to consider this deliberate on the part of Pink Floyd. "Let's create this record that happens to sync up in a few places with THE WIZARD OF OZ and then see if anyone catches it." Preposterous.

Hi Roger- just saw your show in Philly(Camden,NJ Tweeter Ctr) and I thought ultimately that it was a remarkable show. However, I spent a lot of money to see your creative genius and was very upset to here and see your political opinions instead. I just thankyou for getting back to the show after the intermission. I do not disagree with your wanting peace in the middle east or even the world, and no matter which side of the politcal debate we are on, I did not pay to hear and visualize your opinion. You didn't get to see mine or anyone else's thoughts. I can absolutly appreciate your stance and I feel that you have a right to voice it, especially due to your notoriety. My problem is that I also have a right to get what I paid to see and hear. Once again I ultimatly was impressed with your show, but basically your no more qualified than I to push your thoughts to the fans. I paid 300.00 to see you and felt that I really didn't get my monies worth, I almost would like to take that statement back, because overall it was a good show-I only wished that I had seen nothing but the whole show. I kinda feel like I got about 2/3 of the venue. Thanks for giving me a chance to voice my thoughts and peace to you, yours and everyone on earth. Thx Joe Cirucci
