Rumors About Ryan Adams's Dating Life, "Summer Of '69"-Dude Ejection Have Been Greatly Exaggerated

thumbnail icon: Rumors About Ryan Adams's Dating Life, "Summer Of '69"-Dude Ejection Have Been Greatly Exaggerated

Help, you guys, we can't stop reading Ry's Tumblr -- and posts like this one are only exacerbating the problem. As you know, D.R. Adams is in the midst of putting together another album (obviously), and he's sopping up his creative runoff with posts to his blog, Foggy (that's its name). Usually we get blurbs about Woody Allen or Kim Gordon or shopping in NYC, but yesterday Ryan cleared the air on everything from his love for Winona Ryder to his hatred for country music. First, the dating stuff:

1. I never dated Alanis Morrisette. But she is very nice. But I never even went on a date with her. I met her through Ethan Johns and she was just you know one of the nicest people ever and very inspiring so i thanked her several times on a record I made called GOLD which was over-long and maybe half good.

2. I never dated Winona Ryder, but she is my friend and I will always love her. She is so fucking smart and so fucking under the micro-scope I can't imagine how she pulled through, but no, I was never her boyfriend. I was and am her friend. She is as hot as the sun in a hot tub on itself though and everybody knows that. Also, who she is as an actress totally inspired me and helped me form what kind of artist I wanted to be.

In fact, because you are dying to know, Ryan's only dated five women in his life. Then it's on to the better stuff: the true story of what happened the night of the "Summer Of '69" heckler...

3. I never KICKED OUT anyone from a concert. The Ryman Auditorium (a shit hole in Nashville) has the balls to charge you for security when you play there but if some college kid, and I mean SOUTHERN college kid decides to get wasted and scream through 7 songs of a solo acoustic performance, they could give a fuck. I went into the audience and handed him what I thought the ticket price was (40 bucks) and asked him to leave. I said "you have successfully ruined this concert so here is your money, now will you go home now so I can at least try and give the rest of this audience what they paid for. It did not work as the woman who runs that shit-hole re-seated him and BELIEVE IT OR NOT people CHEERED when he was ushered to a new seat. As most of that concert were people telling him to "shut up" There was NO BAND just myself, and I was joined by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings (heroic figures to me) to sing a few tunes and still the man screamed over it. In fact, "Summer of 69" was not shouted when I went to ask him to leave. It was in fact something else. He was so drunk, so very very drunk he did not even know he was there. The writer who wrote it up the next morning submitted it to AP (the Associated Press) in hopes it would bring him a few extra dollars and some exposure. I have suffered since. I seriously could give six shits about Bryan Adams or that song. In my opinion he is not a serious artist. His songs have " implied target market audience" written all over them and in fact he is quite embarrassing in general. Also a piss poor photographer. I guess it is kind of amazing he got to stand next to Tina Turner though. She is rather heroic and an obvious artist. In every sense. Also she was kick ass in Mad Max BeyondfThunderdome and I wish I could coddle her in her chain mail in Barter-Town but that place does not exist.

But wait, there's more. On drugs:

4. I used to take drugs and drink but I never did that when I was wrirting. Very Rarely. I, like most americans, would seek some kind of peaceful bliss after a bone crushing day. I only used speedballs (snorted not shot) at the end of my drug use, which was parallel to my last romance. I am in recovery for both things.

On country:

9. I hate HATE country music. I always have. I "reference" it when I make music that sounds like that, the way a director would use water as a backdrop for a svcene with a shark in it. But I cannot stand country music one bit. unless the Grateful Dead are messin round with it. Then it is tolerable. But they were much more than their single parts- we all know they were a machine.

And now you see why we can't stop reading, even when we try. Help? More stuff to paralyze you with TMItis for when you inevitably run into Ryan in the East Village right here.

Nice to see that he realizes how half-arsed Gold is!!! What a relief.

But seriously, he can't stand country?? Where the hell did English Girls Approximately, Shakedown on 9th Street and My Whinding Wheel Come From then (to name a few)?

The Ryman is one of the most historically significant venues in the country and is certainly not a shit hole. Too bad about the obnoxious drunk though.

Some of my favorite Ryan Adams songs are on Gold.

It seems he may actually be done blogging this time, which is sad. Foggy will be missed.

The rhyman is great and i am greatful to have it (being from Nashville). I have to admit that the security is a little ridiculous at times. If you look at your phone to see what time it is, you get harasses by an 80 year old woman with a flashlight for the next 2 songs. I have seen ryan there and he was definitely more harassed than a harasser. Someone chucked a bottle of whiskey at him at the last show. I was embarrassed for the rest of his fans and nashville.

I too am addicted to Foggy. Something about it is fascinating - seeing his paintings and poetry. I hope his comments about ending Foggy are just a tease.

I was at the famous Ryman show. It went down mostly like Ryan says it did, except that the guy clearly did yell out "Summer of '69!" just before the shit went down and Ryan did try to kick the guy out. He gave him 40 bucks right out of his pocket and kept saying, "Get the fuck out. I'm not playing until you leave." He was pretty upset. I had some friends there who got up and left because they thought Ryan was being an ass, but I thought he was totally in the right. That heckler was a dick. I'm just sorry it's followed Ryan this long.

I question his statement about hating country music because I agree with that first comment made by Kasper....it seems some of Ryan's best and definitely his latest stuff is rooted in country. However, he might be referring to the horrible bullshit pop country music that gets played on the music. I think Ryan's music seems to come from the roots of country before it became bubble gum, over-produced and cookie cutter (reference any song by Carrie Underwood). I do see what Ryan is saying about the Grateful Dead because there are times with his new stuff where the connection is uncanny.....Mr. Adams is def channeling some Jerry Garcia/David Grisham.

I'm assuming Ryan means contemporary country when he says he hates country music? He's cited Gram Parson enough times as one of his major influences, so he obviously appreciates early alt. country. And what are more recent songs like Tears of Gold and Pearls on a String if not country? They're the closest thing to country music he's done, and there's really very little "alt" about them.
Also, I thought he said (quite a while ago) that he was joking when he picked Jay-Z and Nas and shit for his celebrity iTunes playlist? And yet there are pictures of him on his blog with rap albums where he genuinely seems to like them. I think Ryan intentionally contradicts himself in the media and in interviews so people will never know exactly who he is or where his interests lie. I'm pretty skeptical about most of his stuff on tumblr - hard to know if it's the real Ryan Adams talking or not.

yes, but his itunes playlist also contained the fray and linkin park which may have been (hopefully) what he was joking about.

ryan contradicts himself a lot, but what interesting person doesn't? to paraphrase nathaniel hawthorne (I don't remember the actual quote): "so, I contradict myself; I am wise and contain multitudes"

but yeah, I agree it's best not to take what he says too seriously. It doesn't really matter to me whether or not he really loves mariah carey or actually hates *all* country.

The actual quote is "Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes)." And that's Whitman. Very, very different from Hawthorne.

Adams is absolutely doing a bit of creative lying here. Dylan did it, too.

i have seen ryan adams at the ryman (probably one of the finest theaters in the world), but not the famous summer of '69 show. (nashville urban legend very much believes the man did utter the bryan adams lyric.) i find him hard to watch. his fans are waiting for him to fuck up and make an ass of himself. he usually indulges them. i do find it ironic that he hates country and apparently all things nashville when his best record (heartbreaker) was recorded in nashville with two of the finest country musicians: (david rawlings and gillian welch, who rarely, if ever, get heckled.) maybe he should have spent some more time here in tennessee.

The best (worst) part of following Ryan's tumblr is seeing all the girls who reblog his shit and comment on it like they're best friends.

I'd call them out by name but they're probably reading this stereogum article and hopefully already know that they're embarrassing assheads.

I was at the Ryman show. First of all, Ryan was jizzing himself over being at the Ryman the whole night (and he's been back at least 2 more times since then, though I think he came to the War Memorial Auditorium last time he was here). He was also smoking, which is not allowed at the Ryman (although Carlos D from Interpol did it too, among others) so that might have pissed off the management/security. The guy definitely shouted out "Summer of 69," no question about it. Everyone gasped after the guy said it cause they knew Ryan was gonna flip out; he'd been sort of off kilter and ADD the whole night (though extremely entertaining and fairly gracious to the audience). I'm pretty sure there's a bootleg out there where you can hear it if you need proof. I didn't recall the guy yelling earlier in the evening, but I was in the 4th row and pretty enraptured by what was happening on stage, so I probably wasn't listening. At the time, it came off much more like Ryan was sick of the Bryan Adams jokes, but I suppose he could've just been pissed at the guy heckling him. I just remember seeing the heckler and he was wearing a white button down shirt and gladly took the money from Ryan's hand.
Not sure why Ryan's ragging on country music. He's said a lot of dumb things, but that might take the cake. Not sure how a guy who covers "I Still Miss Someone" on a regular basis and produced a Willie Nelson album could say such a thing, but whatever. I love his music, but sometimes his musical taste is questionable. I mean...Kim Gordon? Really?

One more thing, he seems to imply people were happy the guy was reseated as if the whole audience was against him. I could be wrong, and it's hard to tell as the whole thing isn't very clearly written, but if that is what he's saying he's dead wrong. The guy was reseated in the balcony, and no one (on the floor at least) had any idea; we all were cheering because we assumed he had been kicked out.

God, what a pretentious ass.

Alanis inspired me. Winona Rider inspired me. (Inspired you how? She's an actress.)

His comments about Bryan Adams may be true, but come off as more than a little bitter.

And as for his comments about Country, the Grateful Dead don't play Country music. Even if they experimented with their sound, it still wouldn't have been Country. I also find it laughable that he probably made more money from Tim McGraw covering The Stars Go Blue than he has in the last ten years.

And the "shit hole" he's referring to is one of the most historically important music venues in the US. The Ryman has (and consistently still does) hosted hundreds of acts who are far more important and talented than he is, and those acts are not limited to Country musicians.

Bitterness is an ugly emotion, buddy.
