Ryan Boards Up The Message Board
Ryanadams.org, the very fan-owned, four-year-old message board that sent Ryan our way, appears to be shut down – and at Ry's express request! The last few months saw him posting to the site frequently as "Whatever It's Ryan," but after a series of threads created on October 2nd drew his ire, Adams asked for the site to be taken off line, temporarily, and for some editorial control. And by some, we mean total. Here's the salient point, from the updated Acceptable Use Policy, detailing "Unacceptable Content":
Any content that Ryan and/or his management finds unacceptable. His management has an administrator account. No wiggle room there. And despite this carte blanche, the temporary take-down has become indefinite, and now without our go-to place for Ry Ry gossip we feel so lost. And scared. And ... alone.
For added insight, here's an email from board-owner Dave Smith to Stereogum-reader Brian:
I'm a little confused too if that makes you feel any better. Some threads pissed off Ryan (not sure which ones, doesn't really matter at this point), he contacted both myself and management, asking for the board to be shut down NOW until changes have been made. I proposed some changes, but they wouldn't discuss until the board was down. So here we are, now I'm waiting to hear from them..."Sounds like Dave shares your state of bereavement, ryanadams.org posters. But if it's any consolation to the Adams-gossipers among you, we hear that it's just gonna be two albums this year -- not three -- so there should be less material to bitch about, board or none.
UPDATE: Dave has come by to clarify that he was pressured -- but not forced -- to take his site off-line, and that he hopes it'll be up again soon. First Amendment rights are, in fact, in tact.

who knows, this might be good practice.
first, he'll start to edit message boards.
then, he'll realize that editing can benefit his music.
we'll end up with 1 cd per year of great music. because, as of right now his batting average is about .200-2 good songs per cd. not even worth a listen. but who knows, maybe .600 is in his future.
uhhhh, nevermind.

Fuck Ryan Adams!
I just got this code for the Time Out eating event on Tuesday. I went last year, and there’s a bunch of restaurants giving out free food, cool music and there’s a couple of open bars for the whole night. There’s a coupon code (TONYVIP) you enter at check out so you can get them for 20% off your tickets if you buy them before Tuesday. It’s a really fun event, and I think you get a gift bag and a free subscriptions, too.

Wow, Ryan Adams should be flattered that anyone cares about his existence enough to start a message board about him...

Dave here. Just to clarify, although I was pressured to do so, Ryan and his management have not forced me to take the site offline (its a privately owned domain, so they would not have that kind of authority).
I respect Ryan too much to simply ignore his concerns, so I made the decision to pull the board in an attempt at maintaining good relations with Ryan and his management. Whether or not we can reach an agreement on how to deal with these issues remains to be seen.
Keep an eye on our news page for updates. I do not expect to be down for long.

Could it have something to do with the poor reviews of a recent London gig people kept posting there? Apprently threads were deleted and users were banned.

Didn't George Michael have his own message board shut down too?

If it is fan-owned, how can Ryan Adams take it down. Hasn't Ryan Adams heard of the first amendment?

Thanks for clarifying, Dave. But you shouldn't have caved in! Ryan's demands are just going to get more and more unreasonable. Trust me on this.

Ah, sorry, I didn't read all the comments.
Nonetheless, why give in? He's a good songwriter when he wants to be, but he's a dick. Stick it to him.

We may not have the boards anymore, but we'll always have "The Summer of 69"!

Honestly, Dave, you're a good guy for doing that, but if I were you I'd say, "sure you can take it down...for 50 grand you can have it and do whatever you want with it." That URL has gotta be worth something to them.

Dave,
You're doing the right thing here. Being friends with the guy you run a page about is smart. VERRRRY ODD though that Mr. Adams would do this though. It seems his sanity aint what it used to be. Hey Ryan Adams, it's Me, Jesus Christ. Cut it out. Seriously. And quit rapping. I love you.

I was a huge fan of Whiskeytown and of Heartbreaker but...
everything since then is questionable at best
Gold was way overrated
Rock and Roll is absolute shit
Love Is Hell was close to being good but that cover of Wonderwall?
Did anyone ever need another version of that song?
And why does he try to sing sing like Roy Orbison now?
I do however enjoy his rhyming skills.
And I will really miss that message board.

Just posted on ra.org:
I just had a good talk with Ryan about his concerns and reasons for requesting that the board be taken off-line temporarily. There's been a lot of talk about censorship and restricting free speech, but I can assure you he has no grand plans to silence the .org. In fact, quite the opposite, he sees it as a valuable resource, and has enjoyed taking part in the message board, discussing shows even when someone gives a negative review.
There are problems that arise when a site becomes as visible as the .org is. We probably get as much, perhaps even more, traffic than the official site, so it does invite those looking to cause trouble. Someone will join simply to spread a rumor or even outright lies. It’s in these cases that moderation is necessary. For those who simply have a negative option, I wouldn't expect changes to affect you in any way.
That said, one event in particular has caused this to come to a head. I won't go into details, but sensitive information was exposed on the board that was a threat to both Ryan and the band. And he felt (understandably so) very exposed because of the aforementioned visibility of this site. So he requested that the board be taken offline while we take some precautions in an attempt to prevent this from happening in the future.
Hopefully this will assuage some of your concerns. Ryan's management is not attempting to shut down the site, nor are they planning to take control of the board and make it "official." But the board will be down for a while longer (i know better than to commit to a timeframe) while we work to find an appropriate solution.
In the meantime, feel free to visit www.alt-country.org, a similar board (not specific to Ryan) that I've set up as a refuge for those who must feed their .org addiction, as well as the other boards listed below.
Thanks for you understanding!

Saying Rock N Roll sucks is so passe. Rock N Roll has some shit songs, but so does Heartbreaker. It also, like Heartbreaker, has some kick ass songs: Burning Photographs, The Drug's Not Working, So Alive, Wish You Were Here to name a few.

Man that sucks, I was wondering where it had gone... now I know.
I think the main problem lies in the fact that Ryan hangs out on his own message board (not many artists do this)... and he seems to not react too well to criticism. A bad combination.
Personally, if I was Dave, I would suggest to Ryan that maybe he should just like, you know, stay away from the board and let fans be fans... all artists' fans glorify the artist, bitch and moan about the artist, love anything and everything the artist has ever done, hate the latest album and want everything to be like that one classic album they released, etc. It's natural.
Fan = Fanatic... you shouldn't hang around with people who are fanatical about you, it's not healthy.
End of rant.
Thank you.

J

They say that some information that no one except for Ryan/Lost Highway got out. Ryan was online when it happened and it got deleted right away, but to prevent the same thing from happening again.. they shut it down. for now atleast. It will be up soon enough.
