Santogold Covers The Clash

thumbnail icon: Santogold Covers The Clash

Fresh off her spin with Julian and Pharrell in that Converse anthem, Santogold offers an appealing echo-chamber take on the Clash's "Guns Of Brixton." It's like super dub. The cover comes from the Santogold/Diplo mixtape, Top Ranking: A Diplo Dub, which you can study up on over here. You can also cut to the chase and listen to the track at Mad Decent's MySpace (Via GvsB). Diplo's all about putting his stamp on female-sung Clash-covering/sampling songs that involve guns, yes?

Her timing seems slightly ironic

i made the mistake of buying the hype behind her first album.

it is WILDLY uneven and her voice is like if M.I.A. was trying to channel Gwen Stefani. Unlistenable.

Wasn't Santoogold making music before M.I.A.?

she was writing songs for lilly allen and ashley simpson. hardly what i call a career. m.i.a owns her style-biting ass.

at most she should sing the hook in occasional songs.

she should put that pleather jacket away along with that "punk" scowl.

you're not joe strummer, santogold.. or m.i.a. for that matter.

The Arcade Fire's cover of this song still owns the cover wars.

In fact, I wager they started the cover war on this song, because it's only since that cover dropped that I've heard a billion other bands doing versions of it.

... and do you really think the Arcade Fire "started the cover war on this song"?? London Calling came out in 1979 and is one of the greatest rock albums of all time ... you really think that just Brixton became a popular cover choice in the last few years? its been a staple for ages. so instead of trying to compare apples to oranges and claim that "this one is totally > this one" just enjoy it for what it is.

I love the Clash too, dr. grampa, I don't hate fun, but I don't like the cover either. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. That's the joy of the internet, right? Also you can't make people enjoy what they don't want to enjoy. That's a proven fact. Try getting a child who hates veggies or candy to eat either of those things when they don't want to.

OH SHITi, i'm hating! I did a 4track ditty called Guns of Brooklyn in 1999. And I was actually born and raised there, no less. it's alright, whatever
