Score The Sopranos Finale With Any MP3

We know you're sick of a lot of things right now, maybe none more than the finale of the Sopranos, but we have to do this. What started as an e-mail chain about indie anthems that would have been superior to "Don't Stop Believin'" turned into some slapdash nerdery, building a script for testing out different songs -- paste a URL, hit submit, watch, argue. A few minutes later, work ground to a halt and we all ended up watching Carmela walk into the diner about sixty times, sometimes with funky old Children's Television Workshop songs or really filthy zydeco. So, while you contemplate the imminent return of Journey (Jeff Scott Soto's out, it's apparently news that Steve Perry wanted to know how the song would be used, etc) and gauge the viability of referencing BASEketball or the Journey Atari game if this ever comes up in conversation again, we give you the power to be Chase for a Day and score the end of The Sopranos as you see fit. Share your soundtracking successes in the comments.

Instructions

Pretty simple, but you never know...

  1. Paste the full URL of any MP3 into the input box
  2. Click "Play It!"

NOTE: We're not hosting any of the MP3s you submit. Your browser is loading and playing them, but someone's paying for that bandwidth, so be nice.

By the way, stopping and starting the audio controller will stop and start the video player, but not vice versa, and they can get out of sync. You're smart enough to fool around with it on your own, though, so go nuts. You might find this useful if you don't have any mp3s handy.

Get the Flash Player to see this movie.

Paste the URL of your MP3 here:

Justice - "D.A.N.C.E (Paste Black Remix)"

Audio Controller:

Get the Flash Player to see this movie.

Songs we liked playing:

Some of our recent MP3s, for fooling around:

Just click to play 'em.

With that, we're off to Tennessee. Stereogum's annual Bonnaroo coverage will kick off tomorrow afternoon or evening, depending on the wifi situation.

Update: it's on digg, so if you want to completely obliterate our site, go here to vote it up.

Definitely nice on that last bit for Spoon, but I'm actually liking Journey the best. I just think knowing the song, then hearing it like this, there's an anxious vibe that seems to come out...like you immediately realize that it works perfectly as the song just kind of starts earnestly enough and just rolls along on that piano and the pace just fits with Tony sitting a bit nervously and anxious and yeah, I should probably stop the analysis right about there...all in all, Journey was a great choice, upbeat, uplifting, but a kind of nervous energy to it, fit wonderfully.

I don't have an MP3 link, but I just tried it with Fountains of Wayne's "Hackensack." Fitting, in so many ways. If you do it right, the "I will wait for yooooou, as long as I need toooo" bit comes up when the rest of the fam is already there, and Meadow's parking. Plus, at the beginning, when Carmella comes in, it's cool cos they knew each other when they were young, just like in the song. Plus, "now I work for my dad..." Tony, now AJ... I win, bitches!

Shakey Dog by Ghostface is perfect because it starts to build up when the guy goes to the bathroom and the last time we see Tony's face you hear a gunshot and when it goes blank, the song ends and Ghost says "To be continued..." which is fitting because it seems unfinished.

Kelly Clarkson Cancels Summer Tour... because nobody bought tickets… http://collegecandy.com/buzz/3523 Apparently, K.C and her gang want time to "re-evaluate her show's size and scope, "which really means ticket sales were slumping and it was either play to half-capacity crowds or cancel the whole thing.

I've had "The Underdog" on repeat all week, and I've also had the Sopranos finale in my head all week. Combining them was transcendent. Thanks!

My favorite bit of synchronicity was the line "You will not back up an inch ever," which played just as Meadow's rear tire hit the curb.

It's "Wizard of Oz"/"Dark Side of the Moon" for the 21st century.

The first song that popped into my head for this was "Bittersweet Symphony" by The Verve. Not only does the music really fit, but the lyrics are insane with this scene being the last:

"I can't change...I'm a million different people from one day to the next...I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down...try to make ends meet, you're a slave to money THEN YOU DIE/" - cut to black - (even though I don't think he was killed here)

I think two different songs worked pretty well, but not perfectly. The thematic choices and lyrics of the song worked better than the timing itself.

Teddy Thompson's "I Wish It Was Over" was great.

So was Youth Group's cover of "Forever Young." A tad OC, but still usable.

And how is ANYONE fighting the fact that Tony was shot? I find it fairly obvious.

I used the Mark Ronson and Lily Allen cover of "Oh My God" and it was actually insane how well it matched up. The lyrics are a pretty good match, but the shot changes hit it really well.

And there are some really well placed gun shots.

Also, leave it on loop (like with WMP or iTunes) for it to hit the ending well. It's a tad too short.
