Seth Cohen's Cellphone

How come on The O.C. none of the characters have ringtones? You'd think a Penguin-clad, Barsuk-loving lad like Seth Cohen would drop $1.99 on a Megatone to replace that old-school beep. I doubt The Subways would object. Just when it seemed like our favorite Thursday night soap opera couldn't get any more REAL, I'm beginning to think Josh Schwartz dropped the ball.

CSI: NY, on the other hand, is all over this shit. At a key moment in last night's crime-fighting fun, detective Danny Messer's phone started playing the new Coldplay single "Talk." (Cross-promotional deal between CBS and Capitol, obvs; the scene was followed by a commercial for the "Talk" ringtone.)

This post is probably going to display twenty hours from now. Yes, our blog is still fucked (Movable Type blames Media Temple and vice versa) and we are thisclose to begging one of you for MySQL help ... but if your computer lets you comment, tell us which ringtone your favorite TV character would have. Think of it as the Stereogum version of Monkees = Monkees.

Veronica Mars would have the theme song for Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

yeah, but in the OC universe Julie Cooper is all over that ringtone shit. I remember she programmed 'the hustle' for when Jimmy called her in season 2. But yes, very surprising Cohen doesn't have an indie ringtone.

we get it, adam brody has fabricated an identity based on a television character that he plays in order to sell indie rock compilations to 14 year olds. honestly, can any explain what this douchebag has to do with music, aside from name dropping?

I'd have to imagine that Avon Barksdale (from The Wire, hands down the best show on TV) would have something like 2Pac's "Ambitionz of a Ridah" or perhaps some Young Jeezy. Then again, they don't talk on cell phones on that show (cops are listening!), so it's probably a moot point.

On a recent episode of Alias, Marshall had LCD Soundsystem's "Daft Punk Is Playing At My House" as his ringtone for whenever Sydney called. I don't really know why, but that put a smile on my face for at least an hour.

I thought that was LCD on his cell, but wasn't sure. Daft Punk should play at Sydney's house, she could use a good party.

And it made me smile, too.

Penny Woods, of the great disaster that was the last seasons of Good Times, would have "You Don't Have To Be A Star" by that disco couple I can't name off the top of my head right now.
