Sgt. Pepper's Lonely All-Star Jam
Then again, "all-star" is a matter of perspective -- or at maybe a matter of which side of the Atlantic you call home. BBC Radio 2 will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of perennial "Best Record Ever" list-topper Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by rounding up Oasis, Kasier Chiefs, The Killers, James Morrison, Travis, The Fratellis, and Razorlight to record a cover version of the seminal album. Via BBC:
The results will be aired on Radio 2 on 2 June, a day after the anniversary.No confirmation of who's covering what, though we're a little scared to find out.The original album was released on 1 June 1967 and went on to be regarded as one of the best and most influential releases in rock history.
The modern rock bands will be recorded by audio engineer Geoff Emerick, using the one-inch four-track equipment he captured the original on 40 years ago.
The results will be aired on Radio 2 on 2 June, a day after the anniversary. Radio 2 controller Lesley Douglas said: "This will be not only a unique radio event, but a very special musical moment.
"The range and quality of artists involved ensure that this will be a fitting tribute to one of the great albums of all time."

I'd be interested to hear the Oasis cover. I'm guessing it will sound like most of their other Beatles covers, except with the original Beatles lyrics to match! I don't care if they are a cover band though, I friggin' love Oasis.

Yeah, Sgt. Pepper isn't the greatest Beatles record. It is my least favorite probably. I think if you talk to most Beatles fans you'll find the favorites are Rubber Soul, Revolver, or Abbey Road.

Am I just in a bad mood, or do cover versions of 'sixties songs nearly always suck because the new artist has to stand there and fervently sing about "marshmallow pies" or "the spider and the fly" like they know what the fuck the song was originally about or like they're "involved" somehow in the utopian message of the song (and have been all along)?
