She & Him Live - "Take It Back," "You've Really Got a Hold on Me," & "Change Is Hard" (Lillywhite Session)

That's not a comment on the whiteness of She & Him's music. I'm kidding, M. Ward has soul. But seriously, it's because Zooey and Matt recorded a session with Steve Lillywhite. Scarlett, Zooey beat you again: Sitek's hep now, but Lillywhite's legendary. (On top of that, Deschanel's in Videogum's favorite movie). To inaugurate their new Lillywhite Sessions series, World Café hosted She & Him at Avatar Studios, NYC, interviewing Zooey, Matt, and Steve and streaming fine performances of Volume One tracks "Take It Back," "You've Really Got a Hold on Me," "Change Is Hard." They sound great -- better than on those visits to Conan and Craig Ferguson and maybe even better than on the album proper. Lillywhite nails the a.m. radio feel. Or maybe it's because it was broadcast via National Public Radio. Listen here.

Thanks tons for this link! BEAUTIFUL live versions of these tracks -- definitely superior to the late night show versions. "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" is my favourite track on the album and it sounds fabulous here. I simply cannot WAIT to see it done live when I see them next month!

Oh Zooey. I admire your musical efforts but I still like you way better on Weeds.

Band To Watch: Blank Dogs

Blank Dogs are actually singular: It's the insanely prolific one-man Brooklyn-based band of Mr. Blank Dog. We don't know too much about the biography of the guy behind the bedroom new-wave pop/punk and he's usually covering his face with masks...

Quit Your Day Job: Megafaun

Raleigh-via-Eau Clair BTW Megafaun debuted impressively earlier this year with Bury The Square. The trio nip-and-tuck experimental tendencies (tape splicing, white noise colliding with banjo, junkyard-laced spring reverb, screeching feedback at the tail end of a quiet back porch lament)...

Premature Evaluation: of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping

Skeletal Lamping is anything but skeletal. When we took a close listen to album closer "Id Engager" we mentioned it wasn't the strangest, most ambitious, or best tune on of Montreal's new one, but after absorbing the other 14 tracks,...
