NYPost's Best Of '08: Chinese Democracy Worth The Wait

thubmnail icon: NYPost's Best Of '08: Chinese Democracy Worth The Wait

Those of you who feel Stereogum readers' 2008 Best Album picks are too mainstream will not find consolation in our local daily's Top 10 list. Not that you'd expect or want the New York Post to put Department Of Eagles on top, but calling Chinese Democracy the fifth best album of 2008 is sort of a slap in the face to 2008. The paper's rationale for Partie Traumatic at #4 is that Black Kids "[lived] up to the hype as "the next big thing." That's a slap in the face to hype. Only in New York, kids...

10. Various Artists - Sounds Eclectic: The Next One
9. Toumani Diabate - The Mande Variations
8. Duffy - Rockferry
7. Wynton Marsalis & Willie Nelson - Two Men With The Blues
6. The Black Keys - Attack & Release
5. Guns N' Roses - Chinese Democracy
4. Black Kids - Partie Traumatic
3. Lil Wayne - Tha Carter III
2. The Killers - Day and Age
1. Coldplay - Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends

Blurbs and honorable mentions at NYPost.com.

Why even post this?

WHY do people repeatedly, incessantly ask this question? When you write for Stereogum, you can decide what to post about.

Wow! I actually thought The Killers released the worst album of the year.

Surprisingly, I thought the Killers album was really good. One of the best of the year actually.

Okay, I thought the Coldplay had a decent album, and the Killers were pretty decent. But I would *not* have put them in the top ten, much less the top 25. Probably not even the top 50! That list makes me want to cry. For god's sake, have none of them ever heard of Frightened Rabbits?! Nada Surf at least?!

You really expect people who read the post to listen to Frightened Rabbits?

Really? Frightened Rabbits? I made the mistake of downloading their album, legally of course because I heard it was good, and then I realized they are a poor mans indie rock counting crows, and that's bad. The counting crows are the worst fucking band ever, so where does that put them? Fucking americana wanna be bullshit Joni Mitchell inspired crap, like that horrible crows cover. seriously that shit sucks balls.

Really, three people in a row talking about Frightened Rabbit and not writing their name correctly? Including starD who considers them (along with Nada Surf, natch) the most glaring omission from this list.

Also, I'm surprised not to see MGMT here.

Credit for giving props to Toumani Diabate, though. Nice to see some acknowledgement that there's great music outside of the Anglophone world.

yeah, but not sure if that is a good thing in this case. My Grandmother has a better top ten.

Sounds Eclectic? That's not even an album is it?

Also, since when is trendy indie pop considered "eclectic"

if that's your top ten
then an indie pop compilation is eclectic
comparatively of course

I actually legitimately really liked the Black Kids album... it's extremely hooky and fun. "Hit the Heartbrakes" is probably one of the best singles of the year.

Get over yourself with the Chinese Democracy smears already. Stop being too hip for your own good! You hipsters don't even really like the music on your top 10.

you're right, my FAVORITE albums of the year are actually albums I don't really like. cause that makes sense.

I just threw some albums in there to make me look cool, so that i wouldn't be ridiculed ON MY BLOG. http://eatingtheearth.blogspot.com/2008/11/best-records-of-2008.html

this suit is NOT BLACK.

Best top 10 of the year that I have seen. Most of these are albums I would actually want to (and will continue to) listen to as opposed to albums I would prefer to talk about.

Okay. Some of these year-end lists may have warranted the "Shit List" designation, but if any list deserves it, it's this one.

I feel really bad for the Black Keys. Getting squeezed between Willie Nelson 2008 and Chinese Democracy...

I imagine that'd be somewhat like throwing Richard Ford between Tom Clancy and Dan Brown.

Guns N' Roses' Chinese Democracy is an instant classic. By far the best record of 2008.

Chinese Democracy wouldn't be bad except it is rediculously over produced. Didn't these guys used to be a rock n roll band?
