NME Cool List 2008

Before talking about NME's seventh annual cool list, it's kind of cool to look quickly at the 2007 Top 10 to see who's still ... cool. Lethal Bizzle? Barely. Amy Winehouse? Lucky to be alive. Ditto Keith Richards. Beth Ditto? No. Last year one, two, and three went, respectively, to Gallows' Frank Carter, Klaxons' Jamie Reynolds and CSS's Lovefoxx. This year they're all far from the top 10 and the coolest three folks didn't make the list at all 12 months ago. That's the fleeting nature of cool. We have the list, along with the cool person's position last year or if they're a "new entry."

50 Jon McClure, Reverend And The Makers (new entry)
49 Carl Barat, Dirty Pretty Things (new entry)
48 Lethal Bizzle (last year: 5)
47 Eva Spence, Rollo Tomassi (new entry)
46 Matt Bellamy, Muse (last year: 19)
45 Brian Fallon, Gaslight Anthem (new entry)
44 Gruff Rhys, Neon Neon (new entry)
43 Karen O, Yeah Yeah Yeahs (last year: 28)
42 Tom Vain, SCUM (new entry)
41 Shunda K, Yo Majesty (new entry)
40 Robert Plant (new entry)
39 Robbie Furze, The Big Pink (new entry)
38 Jason Pierce, Spiritualized (new entry)
37 Brandon Flowers, The Killers (last year: 44)
36 Frank Carter, Gallows (last year: 1)
35 Little Boots (new entry)
34 DJ Muhava -(new entry)
33 Josh Homme, Queens Of The Stone Age (last year: 34)
32 Lovefoxxx, CSS (last year: 3)
31 Rivers Cuomo, Weezer (new entry)
30 Will Roan, Amazing Baby (new entry)
29 Scarlett Johanssen (new entry)
28 Miles Kane, The Rascals/The Last Shadow Puppets (new entry)
27 Yannis Philippakis, Foals (last year: 45)
26 Nick McCabe, The Verve (new entry)
25 Peter Gabriel (new entry)
24 Zack de la Rocha, Rage Against The Machine (new entry)
23 Jamie Reynolds, Klaxons (last year: 2)
22 Jay Reatard (new entry)
21 Damon Albarn (new entry)
20 Dev Hynes, Test Icicles (last year: 49)
19 Florence Welch, Florence And The Machine (new entry)
18 Ed MacFarlane, Friendly Fires (new entry)
17 Santogold (last year: 48)
16 Ezra Koenig, Vampire Weekend (new entry)
15 Johnny Marr (new entry)
14 Dave Sitek, TV On The Radio (new entry)
13 Lil Wayne (new entry)
12 Guy Garvey, Elbow (new entry)
11 Pink Eyes, Fucked Up (new entry)
10 Caroline Mackay, Glasvegas (new entry)
09 Liam Gallagher, Oasis (new entry)
08 M.I.A. (last year: 11)
07 Caleb Followill, Kings Of Leon (last year: 21)
06 Ladyhawke (new entry)
05 Sam Dust, Late Of The Pier (new entry)
04 Alex Turner, Arctic Monkeys/The Last Shadow Puppets (last year: 6)
03 Andrew VanWyngarden, MGMT (new entry)
02 Jay-Z (new entry)
01 Alice Glass, Crystal Castles (new entry)

I can't believe Joe The Plumber didn't make the list. And Kanye is crying in Auto-Tune. Liam Gallagher's back in the top 10, but Noel's dropped off entirely because getting pushed off a stage is so not cool. Peter Doherty and Winehouse are gone because drugs aren't cool. Neither are the Gossip. But Kings Of Leon are? Pregnancy is cool. As are old people, Robert Plant and Peter Gabriel, too.

Cool IS fleeting nowadays. Musicians and movie stars are disapearing all the time. What ever happened to the greats that lasted for decades? The Beatles, Miles Davis, those cats were cool.

It might not be a popular choice, but Alice Glass at number 1 is the best decision ever.

Ah, the annual proof from the NME that it's been a long time since the magazine was about the music.

Not shocking at all that at least one of the two MGMT kids made it in the top three.

I'm watching CNN election coverage right now and they're fucking playing "Get Up, Stand Up" by Bob Marley... What the fuck?

Rivers Cuomo is cooler than Robert Plant? Nice to know that NME consults Hot Topic before committing blasphemy.

I really expected to see Kevin Barnes as number one when I clicked on this. But to see that he isn't even on the list at all is a total shock (are of Montreal not that well known in England or something?) And who in their right mind thinks that Zack de la Rocha is cool? I'd rather hang out with my grandpa than that blowhard.

Yeah, nobody knows of Montreal in England/ they aren't bland enough for NME (doesn't help they only played one show here on this tour)

I guess it's nice to see Sitek on the list, but feel kinda sorry for him due to his company.

Not to be pedantic or anything, but I know of Montreal and I'm from England. Most of my friends like them too :)

No one in 'England' (as you put it over there in North Mexico) reads NME anymore either. Why buy a shite rag when you can download the albums for free through blogs 3 years in advance and choose your own 'who's cool' list for 2011. [yawn]

Scarlet johanson cool? The only temperature I can think of to describe her is on the other end of the spectrum. And that only applies to her looks. Being able to performvin great film or music that is written by other people does not make you cool.

Alice Glass @ #1? Who would've thought? NME only talks about Crystal Castles almost about all the time. As well as MGMT. I've seen them @ three different festivals this year.Bonnaroo,SXSW,and ACL.They just annoy the shit out of me. "."take only what you need from it/ a family of trees, blah, blah" Retro 80's Hippe Bullshit.

What about elvis costello being cool? He had a great return to form with his new album, featured on jenny lewis' new one, can't think of a time when he wasn't "hip", and he's even from England. I even heard he has his own jools holland show in the works. Although that rumor may be totally false(even if it did grab your attention).

Holy smokes, the NME still does a cool list?!

Shit has been weak for a while. Liam Gallagher? Carl Barat? Karen O? This is so dated. Might as well put Julian Casablancas on the list.

Crystal Castles are so dull. Did they just throw a dart at the CMJ lineup? Do you think White Lies is instantly cooler with NME by association?

I didn't realize they played so many shows together - http://www.evri.com/organization/crystal-castles-0x1c6be.html

I was afraid of this. The 2000's were a return of the cool, after the dismal mid to late 90's. It couldn't last. Crystal Castles? Is that the best we can do?

At least better politics will compensate for the lousy art.
