I dunno if I'd put The Strokes that high. I mean, if we're basing this on commercial success, the record hasn't really sold that well at all. I haven't really heard anybody lose their minds over it either.

Good lists though. I think they pretty much nailed it.

(I will be SO glad when the year is over and we can stop with all the friggin lists)

Since almost every choice on this list is completely predictable, we can now safely say, yes, the Brits have no obsessions with being cool.

About the only left turn in the whole lot was the Kelis track...

TV On The Radio is so overblown (although I do like "The Method"). Best song of the year is Keane's "Is It Any Wonder?". Not a cool song to like, but if you don't give a shit about that kind of thing it's hard to deny.

"Wolf Like Me" is easily one of the top 10 singles of the year. Such a hot jam.

Cool that they included "Fraud in the '80s" though.

That Flaming Lips album suuuuuuuuuuucks. That's a total legacy pick. Where's the M. Ward album, or The Long Winters? And, this will make me terribly unpopular in this thread, I'm sure, but TVOTR is just... just terrible.

Yes Marsh Islands should definately be in top 10...who the hell are these people?

The only one I sort of agree with is Yeah Yeah Yeahs but they shouldn't be #2. Also where is Regina Spektor (who btw had the best album of the year)? TV on the Radio also should be a lot higher on the list.

Overall though I'm pretty depressed with music released this year and this list just confirms it (Artic Monkeys!?!?)...

I think that list is amazingly good, considering. Could you imagine Rolling Stone putting out a year-end list nearly that progressive or representative? I mean, it's still stupid, but not as stupid as I would have expected.

FYI, I find both The Hold Steady and TV on the Radio to be unlistenable.

Glad to see Mogwai on the albums list. Good job for once, NME! "Fraud in the '80s" is probably my favorite song on that Mates of State record too. I have my objections, as we all do but overall this is a decent list.

TVOTR and Thom Yorke definitely had the best ablums of the year, but people are too hard on Arctic Monkeys. They're not the groundbreaking band NME seems to think they are, but some of the songs are pretty fun. But they're definitely not top 10 material, though.

And Sam's Town only belongs on the worst of the year list. That album was shit.

Anyone who has a problem with this list should remember that the nme is written by 19yr olds for 16yr olds to read.

And with that in mind, it is a pretty good list.

Apart from missing off "Passover" by The Black Angels, which is my best album of the year, with Amy Winehouse second. TVOTR 3rd.

Any Year End List where half of it doesn't make you vomit in your mouth is an acceptable list.

And it surely WAS the year of Hot Chip. I'd have had The Warning at #1 as well as "Over and Over."

Long Winters, Band of Horses, Film School and about 6 Swedish bands (like Love is All & I'm From Barcelona) should be on the list though. And I'm shocked Belle & Sabastian aren't on it!

Geez.

Arguing over end-of-year lists is pointless... and yet, and yet...

You people make me laugh with your "this list is so conservative... why no Decemberists/TVTOR/Joanna Newsom?"

Pretentious is not the opposite of conservative.

Arctic Monkeys became incredibly successful playing stripped down, raw pop music with lyrics about working class concerns sung in a thick regional accent. How is that more conservative, less subversive that the above trio who released over-produced, overly intellectualized prog-rock/folk designed to appeal to earnest thirty-something musos?

And as for the Hold Steady? Ha! Greatest trick that Pitchfork ever played, convincing the world (sorry, blogosphere) that a meat-and-potatoes middle-aged bar band were, you know, cool and innovative.

That's all.

NME is pretty much commercial indie. Im predicting indie wil become 'old' cos of them. Its more of a 'cool' scene to be in than it is music.
to the guy who says TV on the radio are overblown and goes on to say Keane had the best single of the year.......
I dont quite like the hold steady that much..Tokyo police clubs EP was brilliant and i quite liked but not loved the strokes( and im a very big fan of theirs) and the decemberists should have been mentioned atleast.

That's one of the worst top 6's possible, surely. I say 6 because I thought those were all pretty inconsistent where The Long Blondes one was surprisingly good. I wouldn't put that in the top 10 though.

Didn't bother looking at the singles, only two that really mattered this year were the debut from I Was a Cub Scout and 'Science' by Monkey Swallows the Universe, and I doubt they'd have put those in there. *checks* Nope, didn't see it, idiots.

Obviously the NME is going to have a list geared more toward their target market, that's how you sell magazines. Taking that into consideration, the list is pretty much exactly what you would expect.

One thing people need to remember is that North American release dates are different from UK release dates. CYHSY was released in 2006 there and I don't think Tokyo Police Club has come out there yet (although they seem like a band that the NME would be fans of).

Ya know, I could sit here and bash the bands chosen for this list or add a bunch that I think deserved to be on there. I could argue over whether the new Hold Steady album is good, as half the people seem to think, or unlistenable, the other half. But to be honest, I think if you people really loved music, you'd spend less time arguing about how good or bad it is and more time actually listening to it. People have different tastes, it should come as no surprise, and music is one of those things thats all about taste. There's no way to really say whats talented music and what isn't anymore, its to diversified and quite frankly, I like it that way.

Hey Erin,

Apologies for quoting a press release but...

"Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not has swept the board at major rock magazines in Denmark (#1 in Gaffa), France (#1 in Les Inrockuptibles and Rock&Folk), Germany (#1 in Visions), Holland (#1 in Oor and #1 in Pot), Spain (#1 in Rolling Stone) and their native Britain (#1 in the NME and #1 in Q Magazine)."

So, pretty much only NME, huh Erin?

Yet another NME cop out- that's why no one reads it over here.

Re: Decemberists/The Hold Steady:

Both very un-NME bands- one of the major problems of the magazine! I'm willing to place a bet that they (unless there are some truly terrible albums out next year) won't be in the top 50 albums anyway- I mean you'll see that the NME in its infinate wisdom chose to omit Beirut, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and Joanne Newsome from its final listings?!
Remember the "readers" of the NME voted the last 'Harry Potter' film as their film of the year!!!!!!

I Was A Cubscout's "Pink Squares" should be in the top 50 singles most definately!

It's pumping electro indie at it's best! and to say they only formed a few months back and have been signed with XL (label of white stripes/prodidgy/basement jaxx)ALREADY! i would say they are pretty damn good! search for them on myspace or something or just switch mtv2 on for a while give them the success they deserve you lovebuckets!!!!

Three phrases should be among the most common in our daily usage. They are: Thank you, I am grateful and I appreciate.

I agree with most of this list to be fair, apart from Hot Chip and Muse, both of whom I find pretty tedious.
