The Year's Most Unintentionally Hilarious Albums

We're all for taking chances, and we fucking love it when an artist digs deep and surprises us with something unexpectedly awesome. But sometimes bands go for broke on their records and end up with egg on their collective face. Sometimes those bands are from Las Vegas. And in the end, the entertainment value is unintended; they're not in on the joke; they are the joke! Well, the folks at Cracked gave the issue some thought and came up with this list of The Five Most Unintentionally Funny Albums of 2006.

5. My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade
4. The Mars Volta - Amputechture
3. Jibbs - Jibbs Feat Jibbs
2. Belle & Sebastian - The Life Pursuit
1. Dragon Force - Inhuman Rampage
You raised your eyebrows twice! Let us help. First, Dragon Force. Who the fuck are Dragon Force? Cracked says they are "a living, breathing, walking cliché of such epic proportions, it makes Spinal Tap seem like an actual documentary." To help support the assertion, they direct you to this video. But closer to your hearts are B&S, and all you need to know is that Cracked ain't down with the twee: "Their music is the sound of two Smurfs hugging" and "is so ridiculously happy, it makes Care Bears look goth." Something tells us they love Morrissey.

So we know full well how Chris Ott would answer, but what do YOU think are the year's most unintentionally hilarious records? Actually, we have a pretty good idea about y'all, too. But tell us anyway! We love hilarity.

Dragonforce is the best band in the world...In a "you know it's over the top and bad, but you don't care cause you still love it" kind of way. A good mood is never too far away when DF is assaulting my senses. I wish I could type out a pick squeal.

Anything by Sufjan Stevens is a big fucking joke. Or maybe the joke is that people take him seriously.

Yeah, that new MCR album ain't doing much for me. As for Dragonforce, my response would have been 'who?' if it was not for Jimmy Eat World's blog linking to that same video not long ago. It's so OTT ridiculous, but those guitars are just awesome. BTW, that's the shortened version of the song. The album version is almost 8 minutes long with more solos.

i am convinced that my chemical romance knows exactly what they're doing. that album's ridiculously hilarious bombast is very intentional.

i'm going to pretend i'm not giving them too much credit.

MORE solos? Is that even possible?! Fucking love the picture-in-picture shots of the guitarists' fretwork. So classic.

There are people who spend significant amounts of time following music online who haven't heard of Dragonforce? Strange.

Regarding the band: They're so over the top, I can never tell whether they're being ironic or not. In fact, this ambiguity only serves to make their work more hilarious than it would be otherwise.

Instead of The Life Pursuit, which is an excellent album in my opinion, they should have that awful fucking I'm From Barcelona album that is trying so hard to be cutesy. It more suits the "makes Care Bears look goth" description. Just watch this video to know what I'm talking about:

Also, Yung Joc's album is laugh out loud funny.

Hey drummers, (not spam, not making money off this)

I’m a musician hoping to hook up with a few of you for an ‘internet music project’.

The basic idea is record yourself playing the drums in a somewhat song-format, Send it to me (email, fileshare, provide link, etc), I’ll finish the song and post a link to it.

I don’t want to waste space in this forum, so visit
(see above) for an email address and more details.

I spend large amounts of time checking out music online, and I'd never heard of Dragonforce.

Granted, I try only to listen to music that isn't completely shitty, and Dragonforce, as far as I can tell, has nothing going for it except said hilarity value.

I don't think it's come out yet, but from "Wind It Up" alone, I can already tell that Gwen Stefani's album is going to be a complete joke.

And it's a shame they came out last year, but Fall Out Boy and Panic! always crack me up.

I have about 3 I think.

1. Paris Hilton- the fact that someone gave her a record contract is a sign of the Apocolypse. Get the space shuttles ready.

2. Hawthorne Heights "If Only You Were Lonely"- this band is proof that with the right marketing and image, you can release the same record twice and triple your sales the second time.

3. Atreyu "A Death Grip On Yesterday"- I have friends who are die-hard fans of this band and even they don't like it. When the single is the best song on the CD, it's time to let go.

How has no one mentioned The Hold Steady? To be that old, living the played-out and cliched James Dean/Jack Kerouac live fast, die young life in Brooklyn, and then fill your album will unironic tunes about losing your virginity at the Southtown Mall in Bloomington, MN? And ODed romances in the chill out tent? Is this not the definition of unintentionally funny? I mean, all that album needed was an IKEA reference to make it an instant classic.

Do you know what's funnier than the Dragon force video is the message thread relating to that video. It's like I was warped back to 1999 when flame wars were all about people calling each other gay.

I was amused with the amount of people who did and didn't get the Volta when they opened for the Peppers. It's a "you love em" or "you hate them" band. No in betweens.

Posted by: Ridley at 11/19/06 4:11 PM | Reply

The Volta is a good band that will be a great band when they learn some restraint. I love myself the occasional prog epic, but they don't just pad a decent song with excessive noodling; they pad it with crap and nearly ruin it.

I cut off all the pitch-down junk at the end of "The Widow". End result: everyone wants to hear it again. It's a Zeppelin-esque blues bash. Nobody wants me to replay the original, and they flat-out reject "L'via L'viaquez".

I'm not saying they should turn into pop stars, but they need to take ((OCCASIONALLY)) a less-is-more approach, for the greater good of the album.

You obviously haven't heard of the band Big C**k then. Check out their video where they're pouring gallons of milk all over these half-naked girls to their son "Real Man". Classic.

The new self-titled CD by Big C**k will be available everywhere on Tuesday, November 21. Big C**k features former Lynch Mob/Cry of Love vocalist Robert Mason and guitarist Dave Henzerling (a.k.a. David Michael-Philips - King Kobra, Keel, Lizzy Borden). No nonsense, in your face, aggressive, loud, rude rock 'n roll in the spirit of Van Halen, AC/DC and Guns 'n Roses.

Am I the only one who noticed that Sufjan Stevens is putting out a Christmas box set feautring art-work hand-drawn by an eleven year old? That level of being a pussy isn't funny to you people? A Christmas box set!
And you really don't see why The Life Pursuit is funny? Those people trying to make "funky" music?
I'd also agree that the new Joanna Newsom record is funny for both its cover and its content. And the Decemberists are getting to the point where they're beyond parody as well.
