Punk's 50 Greatest Albums

Twenty five years into its publishing history, the UK's most widely circulated weekly music mag Kerrang! offers up its list for the finest punk records of all time. The ranking comes by way of PSNYC, who adds, "it's a piece of shit." Here it goes:

50. Killing Joke -- Killing Joke (1980)
49. G.B.H. -- Leather, Bristles, Studs And Acne (1981)
48. Poison Idea -- Feel The Darkness (1990)

Weird that they include Nirvana and Blink-182 but no Mekons, Fall, Gang of Four... Hard to tell what's punk and what's not.

No riot grrl stuff either. Did that not get to England? Sleater-Kinney isn't punk?

Why are the majority of the albums in this list from the 90s..what utter bullshit. :|

And who put Offspring, Rancid and Green Dayy ahead of London Calling?

It's an awful, awful list, but there is something wonderfully satisfying about Rancid's ...And Out Come The Wolves and NOFX's So Long and Thanks For All the Shoes getting some recognition.

We all know of all the cool punk bands to like (Clash, Buzzcocks, Gang of Four, Television, Stooges, etc) but some of that 90's stuff is really great and sadly overlooked.

Rancid's Wolves is like a recreation of London Calling for skaters (what is it, 19 tracks? Not a filler song among them). Thanks for all the shoes is an amazingly strong album that rocks harder and angrier than any of NOFX's other albums yet it's not even properly received by NOFX fans.

I know most of us are over these kinds of bands today, but these two albums, and a couple others, are held by me in as high esteem as some of the albums by real "artists" of the 90's.

It's not the inclusion of Green Day or Get up Kids that appalls me so much as their choice of albums...

Actually, while Get-Up Kids is one of my favorite bands of all time, I would NEVER put them on a punk list, even if "8 MInute Mile" never gets old and could be a good emo inclusion.

I dont think ...And out come the wolves was misplaced, but I'm completely SHOCKED that London Calling is #12. Especially considering that this list was compiled in England? If the rationale is london calling is their mainstream sellout album, why is blink 182/enema of the state even on the list? I'd give 'em dude ranch, but come on.. "all the small things" runner up to london calling???

Punk is dead.

I'm suprised The Stooges didn't have some higher rankings. Someone may correct me on my history, but without the Stooges, the existence or success of the rest of these bands is questionable.

Carson makes a good point--for too long, the lists have always stuck to a canonical doctrine that required one Clash record (or two--one after they "went reggae"), a Siouxsie record, a NYDolls record . . . but nothing of the "third wave" or pop punk.

It's a crap list, but interesting that it attempts to bring some newer artists into the canon.

Quite possibly the most pathetic "list" I've ever seen. It's early and I'm groggy and without even looking at my collection these ICONIC bands are nowhere on the list:

Husker Du
Minutemen
Replacements
Circle Jerks
Naked Raygun
Meat Puppets
Dead Kennedys
X
Wipers
Fear
Germs
T.S.O.L.
Suicidal Tendencies

and not that they belong on my above list, but no:

Pennywise
Bouncing Souls
Zeke
New Bomb Turks

Silly lists......oatmeal's getting cold.

The list may be expansive in terms of time period, which is fine, but it's really weak in terms of the diversity that characterized punk from the beginning. Aside from the Ramones, the whole CBGB's/Max's crowd is ignored (no Patti Smith, Television, Richard Hell, Talking Heads). Even if you assume that Gang of Four, the Slits, Devo, and others aren't on there due to arguable post-punk status, I don't see how you can ignore the New York crowd. Also, if Black Flag can make it, the Minutemen and X should be on there, too.

I think we can all agree that (insert influential, credibility building, iconic artiste from back in a time when music must have been better here) should be on this list. But that's all that ever gets discussed with these types of lists. It's boring. The next person who even mentions the Minutemen, Television, Gang of Four, etc, will be labelled, by me, a boring person.

Now how about those 90's picks? What are your fave punk albums of the 90's (or even 00's)? What albums do you still hold near and dear to your heart?

I'll start:

Rancid: Let's Go all the way til the 2000 self-titled album.
NoFX: White Trash, So Long, The Decline
Lagwagon: Hoss, Let's Talk About Feelings
Hot Water Music: No Division
Millencolin: Pennybridge Pioneers

None of those are Pitchfork approved albums, (well, except for Let's Talking About Feelings...check it out for yourself), but they are all favorites of mine.

I always wonder what people mean when they use the word "best" on these lists. Do they give more weight to pioneers, to bands whose music is catchier, or some other criteria? In terms of catchiness this list is pretty awful.

How could anyone possibly rank Operation Ivy below Rancid? Even if you're biased against ska-punk (and with good reason considering all the AWFUL ska-punk bands that exist), Operation Ivy is one of the first punk bands people tend to get into for a reason.

"London Calling" may have had twice as many songs or so, but stuff like "What's My Name," "White Riot" and "Career Opportunities" on The Clash's self-titled debut. But they're still The Only Band That Ever Mattered, and "LC" is way too low on this list.

"Americana" is shite -- has no place on this list.

"Dookie" at #2? Fuck off.

AFI on the list anywhere? Johnny Cash had more punk in a single pubic hair than all of AFI could dream.

No Misfits in the top 25? The Kerrang writers should punch themselves in the balls repeatedly.

Johnny Thunders is rolling in his grave.

Oh wonderful. the list really is a pice of shite. But don't blame it. It's the adjective "Greatest" that really sets it off. If those smart little people in offices came up with some other adjective for their lists we could have some good discourse. All i'm saying is that it seems that mags try to create "greatest album" lists that crappily try to mix classics (to please traditionalists) and experimental/unloved (to please fans). That being said ..

where's VU's debut!? Or Marquee Moon, The Record by Fear, maybe even Talking Heads' 77 or even further out there Neu! 75. "Hero" has got more loud and punk than .. Hello Rockview. How can Less Than Jake share, no less be ranked above Social D on this list.. what is punk, again?

Rancid was my favorite band for a good part of tenth grade, and though a lot of it seems kind of silly now, ..And Out Come the Wolves and especially Life Won't Wait were awesome. And it's cool to see Op Ivy get some respect, they were a great band, even if they did pave the way for a lot of godawful 90s ska-punk.

It's a comment board for christsake. You know, where people make comments about some dumb list by a dumb magazine. It's great you love you some 90s punk. But is it really more boring for a handful of people to have essentially the same reaction than for you to repeatedly point that out?

I'm at an absolute loss for words. This list is just wrong on so many levels. It was like Kerrang said "Hey, let's piss off everyone!" and this is the ensuing result. Green Day #2? Blink 182 is not only on the list, but AHEAD of the Stooges, Black Flag and Minor Threat? I have to stop. The taste of vomit is really overpowering.

I know this is a typically-hipster-blacklashing-
anything-because-I'm-too-cool-for-it sor of thing to say, but is Never Mind The Bollocks really THAT GOOD? I'm saying this because in all honesty I've never listened to the whole thing. But come on, weren't The Ramones more influential to punk, and The Clash more important? And as for Nevermind... is that even punk?

Now, the idiotic, sure to be mocked capper to this post: Ok, if you have to put a Green Day album on a list like this, shouldn't it be American Idiot? Um, not that I've listened to Green Day, or anything like that. No way.

Okay people: Yes, they left out a LOT of great bands and the order isn't perfect. But SERIOUSLY, why do you take it so personally? It shouldn't be something that ruins your day!
And Rude Boy: You obviously haven't heard AFI's Black Sails in The Sunset if you're calling them unpunk. So why don't you actually have something to base your opinion on before you just start dissing, okay?

The Libertines-Up The Bracket should definitely be on the list. The fact that it isn't shows that the whole list is probably bullshit, which it is. Change #2 from Greenday to Libertines and the list would improve drastically. Greenday is complete crap. The top ten should contain the following bands: Libertines, Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash, New York Dolls, Stooges, Television, Nirvana, Rancid, Dead Kennedys.

no Wire, X, or Gang of Four truly is a crime.

My own personal list would also include:

Swell Maps: "A trip to marineville"
Pere Ubu: "The Modern Dance"
The Modern Lovers s/t

Those last two might not be officially "punk" though...

Geezer, I love Marquee Moon, and I consider Los Angeles, Double Nickels, Fun House, Singles Going Steady, etc, to be among my favorite albums of all time. But when I see people referencing these same albums over and over again I see it as nothing more than credibility flexing.

People like Steve say that there should be nothing on the list past 1985, which is a dumbshit comment if I ever read one.

I'm just saying, we ALL know what albums really should be on the list. But what about the ones actually on there? Some of them are actually really good.

I am disgusted with the list of whatever you want to call. Although pioneers in the movement of their sounds, Nirvana is not punk. Although Courtney was tied to bands such as the Mentors before the death of Kurt. Now on to some of the other bands, Get Up Kids. Gay!!! Blink 182????? give me a break. Offspring??????? Another what the hell is that.

Now GBH should be higher. What about Agnostic Front? the Business? Pennywise definitely deserves more then they got,7 Seconds, Specials, .....Oi Polloi..... so many bands that were way better. WHAT ABOUT THE DEAD BOYS??????

This survey is a bust.

Let's get one thing straight, those of you that don't think Gang of Four should be on this list are idiots. Bands of their type and vintage broke new ground..unlike hardly any bands these days. Also where's Echo & the Bunnymen...criminal. The inclusion of Blink 182 and the like makes this a joke...which i believe is precisely what the magazine wanted..they knew it was a load of crap and just wanted to generate interest. I actually like Green Day,but there's no way they're better or more influential than the Clash,Damned,Echo, the Ramones, and even the Talking Heads in the early days. Ciao.

Patti Smith
Agent Orange
NY Dolls
Husker Du
Circle Jerks

Then some crossover bands:
Violent Femmes
The Kinks
Talking Heads
The Pretenders

I could go on and on - that is how it is with lists and opinions. In my opinion the list has too many 90's groups that I wouldn't really consider Punk. But opinions are like certain body parts...

Sorry, but during the 70's bands like the Sex Pistols, Ramones, Velvet underground, Patti Smith, Lou Reed, Iggy were all the god fathers of punk and probably rank higher on this list. I guess the insertion of bands like Nirvana and blink were based more on their commercial success? Just very inaccurate and not at all completely thought out top 50 list of greatest punk bands.

This list is complete bullshit. Crass should be at #1 and the only other band on that list worth mentioning is Discharge because they created
d-beat.

As for the fact that they didn't have one female group on there, I agree and unfortunatly I'm not surprised. Bikini Kill would have been a great mention as well as Wendy O and Nausea (whom should have been at #2). Also, Aus-Rotten is great as well. These were some of the bands I've known to extremely effect punk in the political and musical way. I didn't hear about women's rights (or should I say "womyn's rights"), animal rights, squatting and actually giving a fuck about the world until I heard the bands mentioned above.

ALSO IF THERE WEREN'T BANDS LIKE GREEN DAY FOR THE YOUNGER GENERATIONS, THEY WOULDN'T KNOW WHAT PUNK WAS OR WHAT OTHER BANDS, BECAUSE GREEN DAY DOES REFER TO OLDER BANDS BEFORE THEM, AND FROM THERE THEY LEARN. YOU CANT EXPECT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT IT IF THEY DIDN'T GROW UP IN THOSE YEARS. THEY HAVE TO FIND OUT FROM SOME WHERE! WHETHER YOU LIKE THEM OR NOT, GIVE THEM CREDIT FOR BEING THERE FOR THE YOUNGER GENERATIONS. ALSO AMERICAN IDIOT SHOULD BE ON THERE.

I don't think any band should have more than one album on this list. Put their best album on and leave room for bands that deserve to be on it and didn't get a shot. Either that or make it a Top 100. Actually both. Because there are at least fifty more that should be on there and aren't. Where are the Minute Men? Where's X? Where's Anti Pasti? Where's the Sub-Humans? Where are the UK Subs, The Dictators, the Melvins or the Meat Puppets, or about a dozen other bands I can think of? No Texas Bands? No Scratch Acid or Butthole Surfers? Their right! Television for classic NY Punk. X for clssic LA punk! Wire for the best British punk band EVER! Put Bad Brains at 2 and take Green Day off the list (not once but TWICE!) I think it isn't punk if it was played on mainstream radio (i.e. Blink 182, Rancid, etc.) Nirvana and Napalm Death are not punk. Pop and Metal. Gang of Four, Gang of Four, Gang of Four, Entertainment. Ministry was pretty crazy shit. And Sonic Youth rewrote music.......Hey, ya' know what, this was a great publicity stunt. I had never heard of Kerrang until a friend told me about the list. Fuck all you guys!

NO:
GEN X
THE UNDEAD
BAUHAUS
VELVET UNDERGROUND

Green Day belongs on the list, but lower in the rankings thirties or forties.

The Offspring and Nirvana are GRUNGE take them off the list entirely. The Sex Pistols are Crap. They may have been the pioneers, but they were all attitude and no substance. Bottom line, Clash at #1 or the list is plain worthless.

The writer of the above list should be shot.

Jesus Christ. Um, no MC5? No Talking Heads? You're going to tell me Dookie is better than London Calling and Ramones? Are you fucking serious? What about the Slits? If the Offspring are better than the Buzzcocks then Milli Vanilli is better than Bob Dylan and I'm a turkey with pink feathers. And the absence of The New York Dolls and The Pixies makes me want to stab myself in the vagina if only to distract myself from the pain. Oh, and I love Enema of the State, but in reality, CELEBRITY SKIN was a better record. And where are Bikini Kill and Television? This list is littered with british records, but very few New York records. And let's face it, Sheena was a punk rocker eons before Sid

Hmmm... what about 24-7 Spyz, Germs, DRI, Generation X, and even Tony James' post Gen X cyberpunk band, Sigue Sigue Sputnik?
I saw 24-7 Spyz open for The Godfathers in 1989, and during their set, they blew out one of the stage monitor speakers. And when a band can do that, 1/2 way through a set, to me, that's a sign of a killer show!!
In 1990 or 1991, I saw DRI play a show on the Clemson University campus, at a club called Edgar's. And those guys were WAY MORE punk than Green Day are now.

Stop with your 'omg punk iz ded' comments. Just because there are a few crappy albums on some list a guy wrote up on the INTERNET, doesn't mean punk is dead.

And I do not think The Sex Pistols should be number one. The Dead Kennedys should be, but that's all matter of opinion, I guess.

And why is Americana by Offspring on that list? It is an okay album, but it doesn't need to be there. And no, The Get-Up Kids shouldn't be on there either.

I'm glad Crass are on there though... They should be much higher on the list, seeing as I think 'Feeding of the 5000' was the BEST punk album of the 70s. :D

And The Descendents, NOFX and Rancid are on there too so it ain't a bad list. :/ It just happens to have a few albums on it that DEFINITELY should not be there, and is missing a few that DEFINITELY should, like 'Death Church' by Rudi Peni and 'The Anger And The Truth' by The Unseen, which is arguably one of the best punk albums of today. I know they get slagged off all the time, but I love 'em anyway. :P Oh, and some Lower Class Brats needs to be on there too...

And A.F.I.'s old shit isn't actually that bad. They used to be a hardcore punk band, a really good one, too, so I'm glad they put one of their OLD records on there. If Decemberunderground had been put on there, I would have thrown a fit. :|

W... T... F... First of all... Ramones #1, not just cuz its my fav band, they'r pioneers of punk, they should get that recognition... Now, puting Green Day, Nirvana, Blink 182, Sublime, less than jake, The get up kids, AFI, etc. should not be on the list or any other list that has "punk" in it...some on the bands belong there but are very screwed up in the order they ar in, i mean Minor Threat at 17... assholes!, and they missed real good hardcore kickass punk bands like Bad Brains, Circle Jerks, Exploited, Suicidal Tendencies, DOA, Black Flag, Dead Boys, TSOL!!!, Wasted Youth, The Addicts, The Virus, Cheap Sex, Pennywise, Generation X, Oxymoron, Operation Ivy, Escorbuto, La Polla Records, 2 Minutos, 7 Seconds, Adolescents, Anti-Heroes... damn i could go on for days at this... Who ever made the list was watching disney chanel and hearing the theme songs on the shows... My God... If you were gonna put The Offspring Put it on the bottom of the list withe their first album The Offspring, or not at all in the list... and like one of you said, after 1985... plz... not much punk to look at after that... punk has been dead for years... but some people still live by the true meaning of punk... Oh and the guy that said Green Day rulez should be tied to a chair and had his penis cut off... fucking poser... if u wanna real 50 album punk list go to california, get some punks from the streets and ask them, not some gay dude from England... imma go now, h8 forums but this was important... btw dont miss the upcoming Documentary "American Hardcore", thats for the real hcpunk era...

The problem with this list is the term punk! Everybody's opinion of what it means to be punk is totally different. Also what you have to remember is that after the initial punk period of '76-'78 punk split into many different groups. In America where the movement didn't really hit the mainstream like it did in England it went underground in the 80's and morphed into hardcore punk which stuck a bit more rigidly to the original musical template. Where as in England it had always been primarily an art-school movement and the post-punk bands (not to be confused with new-wave) were inspired by the freedom that punk gave them and used punk as a spring–board. Unfortunately I think now for a lot of modern so called 'punk' bands and skater kids the term 'punk' just equals teenage angst and dumb aggression. Punk was a philosophical musical movement, it was supposed to open up doors and break down boundaries. A lot of the bands to be influenced by hardcore are to conservative to be punk. American Idiot is Green Day's most punk album because it challenged the norm! As for My Chemical Romance and the rest of these new up and coming bands being hailed as the "New Punk Explosion" by Kerrang! Well, I'm sorry but Lilly Allen is more punk not only musically but in her attitude as any of those bands!

OMG, this whole debate just makes me realise how differently the Americans and the British see "Punk". Ok so Kerrang is English, but Kerrang isn't really an english mag. It's dumb "rawk" etho's are just too american. NME has always been the most influential musical mag, it comes from an art-school background as do most of our bands and that includes punk bands. A lot of these American punk bands are too elitist and keep within strict generic formulas. You lot don't seem to understand the who philosophy of punk. Most Americans not only seem to be totally ignorant of the historical context of the genre, but also you don't seem to have any understanding of the social and cultural impact of punk on popular music as a whole.

There are people on this list up set about these bullshit rankings but then saying why wasn't Mighty Mighty Bosstones or The Jam on there. First of all The Jam is a Mod band and have no right on that list either. The Bosstones ARE NOT PUNK!!!

Fraser are you kidding? How old are you 16? Please Greenday is talented? You are obviously not a musican or a fan of decent music. Go ask someone who has a clue for some good bands for you to start listening to.

FUCK YOU!!!!!!
that WAS a "dumbshit comment" if i ever fuckin saw one.
