Am I the only person who thinks Nellie McKay is completely overrated... and just sucks ass? Ugh. I'm hoping it's Muse but they don't have a shot in hell. I think Dizzee is out too because he got the Mercury Prize. So I'm betting on The Killers.

i may be wrong, but wasn't the concept of the shortlist a way to highlight new, recently "discovered" talent? secret machines and tv on the radio are probaly the only ones deserving of such accolades. a good idea once again corrupted by the good folks at eMpTyVee.

If it's not TV On The Radio, there is no God.

I mean, um, looks like a pretty good list.

I had the chance to interview Nellie McKay this summer before her album came out. She's a pretty fucking cool young lady. I certainly don't think "David" is her best song. I'm more of a fan of "Sari" and her other piano rap songs. That, and she's a fucking piano virtuoso.

Eh, maybe I'm just biased.

I agree with SUMwon, it used to showcase brand-new artists that fell below the radar. Now it's become a prize for any artist that's "indie" cool, but not a multi-platinum seller. (However Franz is selling over a million).

I mean, Ghostface is what, over a decade in the game? Loretta Lynn is in her 4th decade in the industry. In this list only Franz, McKay, Jem, and the Killers are on their first release. An exception could be made for TV on the Radio and Secret Machines, who only had EPs prior.

Also: they're mostly major-label assisted.

this is like a prize for A&R losers who sign the wrong band

Muse should have never been released in America. A cut-out bin staple for years to come.

The Killers? don't get me started. And Jem is another push by the industry for some kind of credibility.

And Ghostface is so blatantly a token nominee it's like watching Webster reruns. For shame.

Like 99% of corporate, profit-driven US culture, this list is a joke.

TV on the Radio wins or hopefully I'll never see this list again.

Yes, we all know the Killers suck major ass and are some label honchos wet dream ("a mainstream, over produced band that we can market as indie, the kids will never know"). Muse should be setting up Radioheads gear before shows, and after seeing them play last night, I can honestly say that the Secret Machines are a load of undeserved hype. Like an uninteresting Interpol, who, ironically, they opened for. I'm pulling for Dizzee Rascal, who is at least interesting, The Streets, who put out a killer concept album, or TV on the Radio, who are one of the only acts listed to really be pushing a unique new sound. Ghostface's album is good too, not quite Ironman, but again, what is?

Lets be honest though, Franz Ferdinand are going to win, provoking every "hipster" under the age of 16 that has never heard the Talking Heads, who doesn't already own their album to go and buy it, while MTV pats themselves on the back.

Being a fellow post-DFW and a present Brooklyner, I feel the need to comment on Secret Machines.

1) They are not a singles band, but they're being turned into one
2)They've been touring non-stop and you can tell they're not as into it anymore
3) I think they're to some degree, believing the hype about themselves.

I saw them live in BK nearly two years ago after I heard they put out an EP. And I was completely floored. Blown away. It was as close to a perfect concert experience as you can get.

But four months ago I saw them again, and the crowd was full of B&T people with copies of TimeOut. And the band was noodling. Jamming. Taking forever to get to the "point" of the song. I take that as a mark of either wanting to say "fuck you" to all the A&R people watching or being so bored onstage they have to make it interesting. Or both.

Aw, come on, let's not get TOO huffy about this here - it's sponsored by MTV, so none of this should surprise anyone. Still, sure it's not showcasing "underground" people, but to MTV, if it's not Hoobastank, then it's underground. So I say, if it's helping the kids not listen to Yellowcard then major-label this shit up.

first off, aren't the shortlist awards finalists supposed to be limited to ten? why are there fifteen on the cd? also, i thought the point was to acknowledge artists who have sold under 500, 000...that would take franz ferdinand and the killers, (at least!), off the list. this invented award needs to stop whoring to the major labels and stay true to it's original plan. of course, the man who is the "brainchild" behind the shortlist awards is also the man that got le tigre signed to a major label. something smells in the state of denmark people....
