Shortlist Music Prize Finalists Announced

The Shortlist Music Prize announcement is here! Remember, last time it was renamed the New Pantheon Prize? Now it's called the Shortlist Music Prize again. And you still don't care!

But for the trivia fiends and listmakers, here's who the panel (i.e., members of Franz Ferdinand, Panic! At The Disco, Snow Patrol, the Killers, Flaming Lips, KT Tunstall, and Sufjan Stevens) chose...

Band of Horses – Everything All the Time
Beirut – Gulag Orskestar
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - The Letting Go
Cat Power – The Greatest
Girl Talk - Night Ripper
Hot Chip - The Warning
Joanna Newsom - Ys
Regina Spektor - Begin to Hope
Spank Rock - YoYoYoYoYo
Tom Waits - Orphans

If you see Regina Spektor, Hot Chip, Girl Talk, or Spank Rock at Coachella this weekend, make sure to congratulate them. We'd predict a winner, but we are always wrong with this Shortlist shit. Here are the past winners:

2001: Sigur Rós - Agaetis Byrjun
2002: N.E.R.D - In Search Of...
2003: Damien Rice - O
2004: TV on the Radio - Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes
2005: Sufjan Stevens - Illinois

band of horses or joanna newsom. boh continues to get screwed by these end of the year lists because their album was released early in the year. why is it that majority of the "best of" lists include majority of the 4th quarter releases? humm.....

I'm really pulling for Band of Horses, but I'm thinking Joanna Newsome will end up taking it.

Spank Rock and Girl Talk are the most banging, though it'll probably go to one of the other ones, like that Newsome warbler. A shame.

Should be Cat Power, but I doubt she will get it.

That Bonnie Prince Billy album is effing weird, and the harmonies don't make sense. I have no idea how that could be considered one of the best of the year. Girl Talk or Hot Chip should take it.

Orphans. Three incredible CDs from the best living songwriter. End of story.

Tom Waits should win every award that anyone could possibly be nominated for, including this one.

No Ys, please.

i like that band of horses cd as much as that guy, but it in no way deserves to be nominated for this award. there was nothing that original or exciting about it. this list is pretty weak... i can think of a tonne of records (that were better but sold poorly) to be nominated. out of these, though, hot chip is the best. seems obvious.

Band To Watch: Blank Dogs

Blank Dogs are actually singular: It's the insanely prolific one-man Brooklyn-based band of Mr. Blank Dog. We don't know too much about the biography of the guy behind the bedroom new-wave pop/punk and he's usually covering his face with masks...

Quit Your Day Job: Megafaun

Raleigh-via-Eau Clair BTW Megafaun debuted impressively earlier this year with Bury The Square. The trio nip-and-tuck experimental tendencies (tape splicing, white noise colliding with banjo, junkyard-laced spring reverb, screeching feedback at the tail end of a quiet back porch lament)...

Premature Evaluation: of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping

Skeletal Lamping is anything but skeletal. When we took a close listen to album closer "Id Engager" we mentioned it wasn't the strangest, most ambitious, or best tune on of Montreal's new one, but after absorbing the other 14 tracks,...
