Subject: clap your hands say "the office"?

Did I hear clap you hands say yeah soundtracking Jim's party on "The Office" last night? Isn't this the same band that wouldn't play The Baitshop?

This is different, though, 'cause The Office is fucking hilarious. FYI, the song was "My Yellow Country Teeth."

Also We Are Scientists were heard on How I Met Your Mother earlier this week and last night's Gilmore Girls had 500 indie band references (e.g., "It's got a nice Fountains of Wayne meets the Shins crossed with Odyssey-era Zombies and a mix of early Who and mid to late-era Replacements vibe to it"). Skid Row's Sebastian Bach was in the episode per usual, as was Joel Gion who parodied a scene from DIG!.

Earlier we were discussing House's great theme: Massive Attack's "Teardrop." Here's Elbow's cover.

That made my night. I had to call my girlfriend immediately to tell her. Her response, "Sellouts." Oh well. At least Dwight got busy.

Gilmore Girls also had both Sebastian Bach and Joel Gion from Brian Jonestown Massacre on the show.

what's wrong with the office using that song? i don't get how that makes them sellouts.

the office using that song would involve the office paying clap your hands say yeah. some people have a problem with this and would refer to the band (in this case, clap your hands say yeah) as sellouts.

take two seconds and imagine being able to make money off of something that you enjoy. seems crazy right?

If I were a band, I wouldn't mind making money for my music. Seems logical.

Maybe they like the show. If I liked a show quite a bit, I would be more than happy to let them use my music. Atleast they refused to be played on the O.C.

And let's not forget last night's episode of House used Goldfrap during a sex scene!

Hmm last time I checked, clap your hands say yeah, made music, music which is made for entertainment. then there is tv, which is also made for entertainment, tv shows use songs to enhance the entertainment value. this particular show happend to use a particularly good song to enhance a certain character, in this case Jim. Jim who obviously spends most of his time on a computer most of his days at work, and if he wastes time at work like the typical american, ie. me, and you, he probably stumbles across stereogum, *cough* touchthatdial.com or other internet savvy chic (see music geek) webpages and probably listens to clap your hands say yeah, also, jim seems to hate Scranton, PA, something i an relate to, having grew up in Northeast PA, now a year ago when i worked in an "office" in NorthEast PA, when we had a party i would have played, the arcade fire, or Broken Social Scene something equally indie popular to display my musical prowess, wierdness, blah blah blah.

So as you can see this is nothing more than character development, and writers/producers striving for a bit of realism on tv, and now whats so bad about that.

ohnoes!

crazy fact: bands need to make money just as much as you do. they exist outside of your cd, mp3, record and the stage.

just sayin', although many others here covered the issue better.

Dialogue from last night's Gilmore Girls:

Rory: Mom... does this show still have an audience? Is anyone still watching?

Lorelai: Sure it does.

Rory: How do you figure?

Lorelai: CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH!

Rory: What? That doesn't even make any sense!

Lorelai: It's the name of that band get it!

Rory: I'm not talking to you anymore.

i forgot to mention that that elbow cover of massive attack is awesome. i usually hate covers, but that song is just always cool. if you're the reflective type who also has learned to forgive MA for 100th window. (the mighty fucking fall hard.)

I was surprised after all of the random indie references on Gilmore Girls that Lane's band mates said a couple of weeks ago that they wanted a certain song to sound more like Foo Fighters... very uncharacteristic of the show.

while it makes me happy when i see/hear a reference to something i like (i.e. CHYSY on the office, which i missed... dammit!), there's something insidious about the way gilmore girls references indie music. i can't quite put my finger on it. on gilmore girls it's referencing without any substance behind the reference, evacuating any meaning/content of the object referenced. pure, unabashed name-dropping... weak. it's like when the head cheerleader who wouldn't be caught dead listening to authentic punk music wears a ramones t-shirt (and i don't mean ironically). or maybe i just really fucking hate gilmore girls.

Has anybody mentioned that the New Pornographers' "Use It" was playing in the background at Chili's when Michael and Jan were wining and dining Tim Meadows on The Office a couple weeks back?

Chili's rocks!

side question but this is still related... does anyone know what the theme song is for "comedians of comedy"? the tv show not the movie. it sounds really familiar but i cant put my finger on what it is. thanks.

I agree with the "So what?" argument. I hate the misapprehention that when a musician makes money, they're a sellout. I hardly think that Alec Ounsworth sacrificed his artistic integrity for the sake of letting the Office use his song.

Sidenote: It's a damn good song.

Gilmore Girls makes culture references to everything... obscure 19th century literature, bad b-movies from the 70s, etc. The indie music is only one part of it.

Great show.

I found out that the Warner Bros. are from Canada. Now they're ultimately sell outs for pushing out crappy shows. One Tree Hill? Oh come on.

They played "Use It" by the New Pornographers on the office in an earlier episode as well.

Somewhat unrelated:

Did anyone happen to see "Waiting"? It had a few New Pornographers tunes in it

Any chance someone could explain the reference to Dundee in the title, just that I'm from a city called Dundee and I don't get it?

Dundee is a reference to an earlier Office episode. It's set at a place called Dunder Mifflin. Dundee's were awards given out to the employees there.

Hmm, sounds like Gilmore Girls might be an ok show. is it any good? the only time i saw they just talked incessantly and were annoying.

I agree about the obsequious name dropping segment with Lane's band. It was incredibly annoying. What the hell is all that supposed to mean? I didn't realize that was the guy from skid row. Like he would know half the groups he spouted out anyways. What's the former lead singer from skid row doing in a small indie band playing bass anyways? It's a complete miscast.
