Also We Are Scientists were heard on How I Met Your Mother earlier this week and last night's Gilmore Girls had 500 indie band references (e.g., "It's got a nice Fountains of Wayne meets the Shins crossed with Odyssey-era Zombies and a mix of early Who and mid to late-era Replacements vibe to it"). Skid Row's Sebastian Bach was in the episode per usual, as was Joel Gion who parodied a scene from DIG!.

the office using that song would involve the office paying clap your hands say yeah. some people have a problem with this and would refer to the band (in this case, clap your hands say yeah) as sellouts.

Hmm last time I checked, clap your hands say yeah, made music, music which is made for entertainment. then there is tv, which is also made for entertainment, tv shows use songs to enhance the entertainment value. this particular show happend to use a particularly good song to enhance a certain character, in this case Jim. Jim who obviously spends most of his time on a computer most of his days at work, and if he wastes time at work like the typical american, ie. me, and you, he probably stumbles across stereogum, *cough* touchthatdial.com or other internet savvy chic (see music geek) webpages and probably listens to clap your hands say yeah, also, jim seems to hate Scranton, PA, something i an relate to, having grew up in Northeast PA, now a year ago when i worked in an "office" in NorthEast PA, when we had a party i would have played, the arcade fire, or Broken Social Scene something equally indie popular to display my musical prowess, wierdness, blah blah blah.
So as you can see this is nothing more than character development, and writers/producers striving for a bit of realism on tv, and now whats so bad about that.

I was surprised after all of the random indie references on Gilmore Girls that Lane's band mates said a couple of weeks ago that they wanted a certain song to sound more like Foo Fighters... very uncharacteristic of the show.

while it makes me happy when i see/hear a reference to something i like (i.e. CHYSY on the office, which i missed... dammit!), there's something insidious about the way gilmore girls references indie music. i can't quite put my finger on it. on gilmore girls it's referencing without any substance behind the reference, evacuating any meaning/content of the object referenced. pure, unabashed name-dropping... weak. it's like when the head cheerleader who wouldn't be caught dead listening to authentic punk music wears a ramones t-shirt (and i don't mean ironically). or maybe i just really fucking hate gilmore girls.

I agree with the "So what?" argument. I hate the misapprehention that when a musician makes money, they're a sellout. I hardly think that Alec Ounsworth sacrificed his artistic integrity for the sake of letting the Office use his song.

Gilmore Girls makes culture references to everything... obscure 19th century literature, bad b-movies from the 70s, etc. The indie music is only one part of it.

Dundee is a reference to an earlier Office episode. It's set at a place called Dunder Mifflin. Dundee's were awards given out to the employees there.

I agree about the obsequious name dropping segment with Lane's band. It was incredibly annoying. What the hell is all that supposed to mean? I didn't realize that was the guy from skid row. Like he would know half the groups he spouted out anyways. What's the former lead singer from skid row doing in a small indie band playing bass anyways? It's a complete miscast.
