Exit Music (From The Sopranos)

We figure network news and every newspaper available have already spoiled last night's ending for those that didn't tune in, so really, you're in no harm here. The show that kicked off our blog documented obsession with tunes on the tube (actual obsession dates back to the womb) closed shop last night, a bittersweet moment for Sunday night HBO junkies and fans of extended gabagol-scarfing sequences alike. As always, David Chase peppered the final serving of The Sopranos with choice musical treats, the centerpieces coming from Dylan and Journey, with shreds of Sonic Youth and other tuneage along the way. So, via hbo.com, here's what you heard during your Sopranos party last night, up until the time you banged your TV to make sure it hadn't malfunctioned.

Vanilla Fudge - "You Keep Me Hangin' On"
Tony wakes up; Dante drives Tony to his family; Phil fills up.

Randy & The Rainbows - "Denise"
Tony and Paulie wait for Agent Harris at the airport.

Antonio Vivaldi - "Four Seasons"
Bobby's wake at Vesuvio's.

Bob Dylan - "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)"
AJ & Rhiannon listen to the song in the car

Sonic Youth - "I Dreamed, I Dream"
Tony and Uncle Pat talk in backroom of The Bing.

Curtis Lee - "Pretty Little Angel Eyes"
Paulie is spooked by a cat at Satriale's.

Credence Clearwater Revival - "I Heard It Through The Grapevine"
Tony offers Paulie a promotion.

Larry Graham - "The Jam"
Neil bears bad news in The Bing backroom.

The Noisettes - "Scratch Your Name"
AJ leaves work and picks up Rhiannon from school.

Kid Creole & The Coconuts - "The Lifeboat Party"
AJ and Rhiannon watch TV.

Little Feat - "All That You Dream"
Tony arrives at a diner and waits for his family.

Journey - "Don't Stop Believin'"
Tony plays Journey on a jukebox.

The quick cut left us jilted for a sec, but the more we think about it, the more we dig the blacked-out ending. Gotta wonder though: Was it Chase's artistic statement on the untidy, banality of life in the onion ring USA, or an open door for a movie? Probably a little art, and a little commerce. Pretty smooth.

How could you not think the last few minutes were not brilliant?

The clue as to what happens next was right there.

If you look closely, it happens when Tony

Chase has said that in the event he wakes up and feels like doing a Sopranos movie, he wants to leave that door open. Don't stop believing indeed.

I dont know if anyone caught it, but when Paulie answered the prepaid cell phone, Simon and Garfunkel's Cecilia was the ring tone

The perspective of the series has largely been 3rd person. That is we watch the characters and plot from an outsiders point of view. For the most part this is the perspective. However, every once in while it becomes a sort of 1st and 2nd person perspective. Every once in while we are thrust into the perspective (usually just visually) of Tony. There are many instances which I will bring up later, but this has been the basic pattern of perspectives for the series. Let us say that those 11 seconds of nothing was really being suddenly thrust into that Tony perspective. What would this nothing mean? Well, it would mean he is dead. Suddenly, without warning, Tony is dead. Well, how would he have a died? I don’t know about you, but did you notice that guy who barely touched his food at the counter go to the bathroom? We know how they do it. Inconspicuous. Methodical. Without warning. Headshot. Dead. So, Tony is killed in front of his entire family. Some may say how do I know if this is what the nothingness is? Okay, let’s say you’re right and Tony is killed, why wouldn’t they just show it. My reply is that I guess I’m not as heartless as you. I really don’t want to see Tony get offed. It seems a little perverse. And for you fans who would want to see it just to know, you really aren’t fans. A real fan would relish the opportunity to experience that last moment rather than merely witnessing it. A real fan (unlike Dr. Melfi) believes there’s something good in Tony worth experiencing. And for those fans who refuse to step into Tony’s world, David Chase gave you the ending you deserved: nothing. As for the true believers who have made it a habit to empathize and understand, we have the special treat of truly experiencing who the man is, his essence, and his purpose. And if you need any further encouragement to accept this interpretation, remember what Bobby said to Tony on the boat: When you die, all you see is blankness. Coincidence–probably not. For those who are now ready to step inside the world of Tony, remember that at the heart of understanding The Sopranos lies the viewers’ willingness to infer. i love at bobbys funeral dinner, if you listened closely, you hear paulie chit chatting with someone in the food line and he says something like "i hear cauiliflower is 3.99 a pound"...hilarious

paulie has had so many good lines in the last few episodes...

"nice stems" in reference to aj's girl when theyre packing up to go to the safe house

"you want us to get you a carryout from bahsh-yah fresh" at the bing after they discuss the almost-suicide

its those small details of the show that you had to pay close attention to that i always liked the most.
