In Loving Memory Of Kurt Cobain: Nirvana Tunes On Cold Case

Bit the bullet and spent an hour with CBS's Cold Case last night, sorta like CSI series, except set in Philadelphia: dealing with old, unresolved crimes; and for last night's very special show only, featuring the tunes of Nirvana. The ep, titled "Thrill Kill," featured a crime set in '94 and revolved around a rebel grunge teen with a shock of pink in his hair. With alternative alleged-criminals like that? Good enough for C. Love and Primary Wave to cash some track placement checks.

At this point we really don't object to songs popping up in shows or in commercials. (Aspiring tunesmiths like Kurt gotta put food on the table, too! Oh, right.) What does occasionally stink is the company bands shill for, or even worse and in this case, the shittiness of the show. We spent an hour we'll never get back watching a ham-fisted caricature sketch of murdered children, wrongly accused tattooed teens, and a painfully predicitible "twist" in which the killer was a normal looking (but truly psycho) dad who reverted to a dark place born from his own abused-as-a-child past. But hearing "Come As You Are" when he was finally put in handcuffs was SO ROCK!

Anyway. Hope this pays for Francis Bean's tuition or whatever. And speaking of (segue), how about a couple of pics of little Bean from the latest issue of Teen Vogue?

They grows up so fast!

And for the trivia buffs, the other Nirvana tunes on Cold Case were "All Apologies," "Stay Away," "If You Must," "Lithium," "Drain You," "Heart Shaped Box" and "Something in the Way." If you missed it ... you didn't miss anything.

Before I comment, is there a limit on how much cursing my comment can contain? Any particular words that are off limits? Can I make direct threats of bodily harm? Really, I need to know before I proceed.

Oh.

Francis has entered the awkward years, and has apparently done it looking way to much like Courtney and that Cure chick you all knew in middle school. Not that this is any worse than the current state of Dave Grohl. Props to Novoselic, though, he's trying to change the world.

Is the other girl Bruce & Demi's daughter? Shoot me for knowing that if I'm right

Hmmm.. although Frances Bean does very much seem to have Kurt's eyes.

I guess it was primarily since she couldn't sell them on eBay. Geebus, will Courtney ever stop pillaging the remains of Kurt, huh???

Dave Grohl was on KROQ in LA this morning. He had no idea about this Cold Case thing and made fun of it.

This is actually the second Cold Case that used Nirvana songs. I saw one last year that revolved around some kid who was a huge Nirvana fan and was thought to have killed himself out of remorse for Kurt's death, but guess what... Really, it was a lame episode in a lame series. I too lost an hour of my life to cr@p tv.

When I heard that Nirvana's song rights were sold, I knew that this sorta thing would start. Let me guess what's next, a car commercial?

jeebus, did you have to start this post with "bit the bullet?"

Bit the bullet?

If you can start your post with that phrase, here's a classic:

If Kurt were still alive....He and Courtney would be divorced. Frances would probably hate him, and he would probably be so proud of his daughter.

I like the semi-cross dressing thing. Reminds me of Kurt in the Advocate.

Ever heard of the West Memphis Three? This episode of Cold Case was obviously based on them and their case. The "Paradise Lost" documentaries made about the West Memphis 3's soundtrack was all Metallica. This is most likely why Cold Case did a soundtrack to this episode with one band, and picked Nirvana, picking 1994 for the setting. It wasn't too bad, but kind of bugged me how much they followed the most commonly believed theory of the WM3 case.

I'm pretty sure you don't need permission from the artist to use a song in a TV series as long as it only airs on TV. If you're putting it out on DVD it's a whole other deal. My point: it has nothing to do with who owns the song rights.

I agree with Karin - as soon as this episode began, I thought of the West Memphis Three. I just wish that someone would find evidence to convict that idiot John Mark Byers and find the proof to release those 3 innocent boys. As much as I enjoyed the episode, it saddened me to think Lilly found justice in the end, but the W.M.3. continue to be "caged" for a crime they didn't commit.

and Frances has absolutely no idea that (i) the reason that this needs a Cold Case re-opening is due to the evidence that her mother destroyed, manipluated and the manipulation of the Seattle Police force by same and (ii) that IF an indepdent team did re-open the case as MURDER that her mother would be the first likley to be indicted ??????

hello..... dreamworld ......
