Slough Hands

"There are viewers who do not just love The Office, they want to marry it and have its children," Alessandra Stanley wrote in the NY Times yesterday. She's right. It's a cult. I've met some of these people.

Did you miss last night's painfully funny two-hour special on BBC America? It will be on again this weekend. Divo it.

Here's the lovely theme song.

Stereophonics - "Handbags & Gladrags"

The history of "Handbags & Gladrags" can be found here.

Stereogum likes Stereophonics. Disco Stu likes disco music.

The American take on the series premieres mid-season on NBC. The cast includes Steve Carrell, Rainn Wilson, Jenna Fischer, John Kasinski, and Kevan's friend B.J. Novak. Ricky Gervais is executive producing so hopefully it won't suck too much.

In the meantime, you can watch The Office: The Complete Collection starting 11/16.

The Office is more than just a cult in England. It was always shown on Wednesday nights, BBC2, 9 o'clock. Thursday mornings in the office, and I mean the whole morning, were spent discussing the previous nights show, the best funny bits and the best funny bits which maybe weren't meant to be funny bits (and thats the beauty of it!). Easily the funniest show - Staff Training...David Brent with his guitar...he actually did his own version of Rod Stewarts "Handbags and Gladrags" for the closing credits. I'm sure he can boast to having the funniest closing credits, ever! Maybe, apart from The Muppet Show...

Very funny episode, Stewart, but, for me, the funniest has to be the one with Simon, the IT support guy. Not ALL IT support people are as arrogant, pedantic, and snide as Simon, but unfortunately, there are enough around with a similar attitude to make him hilariously recognisable!

If you haven't seen him yet, wait until you do before checking out Elliot Day's 'Office Quotes' page [http://homepage.mac.com/elliottday/theoffice/quotes2.html]!

Okay Gervais is the executive producer so it should be good, hopefully it won't be like the American version of "Coupling" or Rosanne's American version of "AbFab" that never was!

If you haven't seen Gareth ("Cock!") in the sidecar, it's a must see. Gareth's web page: http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/theoffice/gareth/index.shtml

Funny, hilarious, genius, yes. But did anyone else find themselves overwhelmed with emotion at the end, or was it just us? My husband and I were sobbing like babies.

The ending ROCKED! Dawn & Tim...the greatest LOVE Story. EVA.

I am obsessed with this show. It's even better when you're high.

Long live The Office!

Funniest line from The Office - Tim to Gareth "Did you see that film last night, Gaylords Say No" Gareth to Tim "No".

I'm from East London but, I worked for a while (for too long) in Slough. Even the weather in the opening credits is Slough, miserable but not quite raining. If Slough was a color, it'd be Grey.

Get your weekend started on the right note -

Bad news. The US remake is firmly in the vein of the Fawlty Towers one. Here's a clip: http://groovymother.com/archives/2004/10/18/when_good_things.html

I wonder what will happen to the childish anti-Bush t-shirt industry (as featured on your blogads) if Kerry wins. Will "Wearing Your Dissent Everywhere" then be $3.00 cheaper? Only time will tell.

Saw the American version yesterday... OMG it is SO awful. I can not explain how awful it is. Maybe American's like it, but as a Brit it plays out so badly - cheap camerawork (properly cheap, not mock-cheap), completely the wrong delivery of jokes, a focus more on the actors than the characters... The Office is about human insecurity and relationships - the American version seems to be about how many comedian-actors can get in on what should have beena cash-cow.

Hey, Scott! Where the fuck is the Animal Collective promo? I know you spun "Sung Tongs" for weeks, even months, through the summer. They're touring and they're from MD and they're awesome! I'm from MD! And I'm drunk. ANIMAL COLLECTIVE! Woo!

Jenna Fischer's mom taught me history in junior high. I never met Jenna, but Mrs. Fischer was always talking about her and her sister, so I'll probably catch the premiere ep just to get a glimpse of Jenna.

Fans of "The Office" should really try to see the film of Ricky Gervais' standup act, called "Animals." Hilarious stuff. You can watch it if you have a region-free DVD player, or you might be able to find it out there on the web.

I ran into the guy who plays Tim in the UK Office at a gig and you'll all be relieved to know that he is just as sweet in real life as in the series. He had all the time in the world to talk to me and repeatedly shook my hand *Swoon*

The BBC site does not show that they will be re-airing the special - does anyone know if it will actually be playing this weekend?

I missed it last week!
