Smashing Pumpkins Recording

Don't get your hopes up for a surprise Coachella reunion, but as promised:

"It's official, The Smashing Pumpkins are currently writing songs for their upcoming album, their first since 2000. No release date has yet been set, but the band plans to begin recording this summer."
Via smashingpumpkins.com.

By "Smashing Pumpkins" do they mean ... Billy and Jimmy? Who's got the scoop?

what's going to make it any different from zwan &/or BC's solo release? Didn't JC drum on both of those efforts?

I'm hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst. That solo Corrigan record left a bad taste in my mouth.

Jimmy did all of Zwan but just one song on Billy's solo record.

you know, everyone started to look at the pumpkins somewhat fondly over the last few yrs...and now that he's bringing em back, billy will remind us of what they really were...

it appears that its everyone minus Jimmy and D'Arcy.

Last I heard about Jimmy was:
(Billboard- Jan. 17, 2006)
Former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha and Fountains Of Wayne/Ivy principal Adam Schlesinger have signed on to produce a new studio album from enduring soft rock act America.

So glad to meet fellow pumpkins' fans! That's what I love about 'gum: it ain't afraid to show love to Pearl Jam or Smashing Pumpkins, even if Pavement dissed the latter.

Here's the truth: of all the alterna-pop bands of the grunge era, Smashing Pumpkins has aged the best. Better than Nirvana. Don't believe me?

I could see Arcade Fire doing a Pumpkins cover.

I can see Seether doing a Nirvana cover.

Case closed.

Billy Corgan's idea of purpose in 'reforming' Pumpkins is what sets it apart from Zwan and his solo record. He says he wants to perform SP songs again, and wants to write music in that vain, with continuity from where he left off. That's his reason for doing it - he realized that's ultimately what he wanted the most and there was no reason not to do it.

This is pathetic, and the album will be shit. It always is when bands get back together without a couple of key members who are still alive. And especially when the lead singer has pumped out two "solo" albums of dreck. Phooey. Puppet Show and Spinal Tap.

Agree with Tony G. Who cares? What I've heard from Mr. Corgan's most recent efforts put me to sleep. I still love Gish and Siamese Dream to a certain extent. But it's been downhill since then. I'm all for staying with a band (as I did with Catherine Wheel - miss you guys!), but got to call a spade a spade or, in this case, a dud a dud.

This is going to be dire. This is just another sad example of rock star arrogance, and if you're excited about this pseudo-Pumpkins reunion, you probably think Axl's attempt at a Guns N' Roses these past few years is genuinely intriguing. Now we get to wait around for Billy's Chinese Democracy.

Whigsboy, the Wheel is just parked! Don't give up hope!

Dickinson's solo cd isn't amazing, but seeing him live performing old CW songs alone acoustic was awesome.

I wouldn't mind hearing new "old school" pumpkins (not "Adore" era shit), but if it ain't the whole team, then why bother?

It will be Billy, Jimmy, and James. No clue who the bassist will be, but not D'Arcy, that's for sure.
We'll see...I'm not holding my breath.

the only *key* members in Smashing Pumpkins were Billy and Jimmy. It would be nice to have Iha on board, but no loss if D'Arcy does not make an appearance.

Who could possibly give a shit? They were pretentious has-beens before they broke up the first time, and it'll be ten times worse now.

This reminds me so much of the Jane's Addiction "reunion" - people who would have no idea how to work a real job if their life depended on it. If you can't find something else to do than be in a rock band that's just pathetic.

Mo:

Seether doing Nirvana? I can see that happening, but I can also predict it being ass like everything else they do. I wholeheartedly disagree with your statement. It's a horrible comparison since Nirvana hasb't been around since 1994 to "age well". Arcade Fire's ability to cover a Smashing Pumpkins song, isn't testament to Billy et al's talent, it would simply be a demonstration of Arcade Fire's originality and ability to make old works sound fresh with their innovative sound. It would have nothing to do with Billy Corgan's ego-driven writing.

The rumor I heard was Melissa Auf De Mar mon de Markinson would be the Darcy stand-in bass player.

Seriously, about 90% of you are idiots. You probably hate the Beatles too.

Example: the dumbass who said Corgan put out two solo albums... not... at... all. Zwan was not a solo project, and Mary Star of the Sea was awesome; moreover, they were even more awesome than the Pumpkins live. I'm not going to try to defend the future embrace, cuz that did suck pretty hard, except to say that he said himself it was an experiment. The Pumpkins never put out a bad record, as far as I'm concerned -- if Adore had been put out by an indie band, the scenester crowd would have shit their pants with love for it. Fuck the haters.

Beleive me, I love the pumpkins' circa Siamese Dream material. But are the pumpkins going to continue where they last left off? Commercially, that was Machina/Machines Of God... which bascially sucked.

Melissa of the sea is so cute. And ripping on the bass too, huh? She'd be a sick 4th for that regroup. I know I'd want to bust out new material if I were BG. Good luck and God Bless Pavement.

It would be wonderful if all four original Pumpkins could get back together and rock again, but if they're not getting along and still having all sorts of dysfuction with drugs et al. it would suck for them to get back together just for the money. That said, I really hope they tour. Just hearing Billy Corgan playing those classic Pumpkins songs again would be a treat. I always thought hearing "Tonight, Tonight" live would be amazing, now maybe I'll get to. As for the Nirvana comparison, part of me likes the Pumpkins songs even more than the Nirvana songs, but saying they were more important just because they were around longer is dumb. Nirvana made 3 great albums and then they were done, they didn't get to make Machina the Machines of God. And most people probably wouldn't know who the Arcade Fire were today (and SP for that matter) if Nirvana hadn't brought underground music to the mainstream.

Seether is a band of huge Smashing Pumpkins fans, if I remember correctly... I think they played a benefit show in Chicago organized by Smashing Pumpkins fans and featuring Smashing Pumpkins covers a year after the Smashing Pumpkins broke up.

Well, it is true that Nirvana hasn't been around as long as the Pumpkins. But it doesn't matter. I said the Pumpkins aged better. You don't have to be around longer to age better.

Let me put it this way: if Pumpkins and Nirvana were new bands in this decade, we would all think Nirvana were a bunch of annoying nu metal/pop punk rejects, while Pumpkins would be on the same mix CD as Wolfmother and Flaming Lips.

I am not saying Pumpkins are better than Nirvana by the way. Nirvana was so influential that it spawned a lot of derivative, hackneyed garbage like Puddle of Mudd and Seether. Since these pseudo-grunge jerks ran the grunge sound to the ground, Nirvana is harder to listen to than the Pumpkins.

Personally, I am totally psyched, for now. As long as he brings the ROCK, this will be good. Melissa is a much better choice on bass, D'arcy never played a lick on any of the albums anyway.

It's odd to think that Mellon Collie is over 10 years old now. And here I am still giddy that a new Pumpkins record will be everything I have ever dreamed of. Not to mention any die-hard pumpkin heads (hey guys) are accustomed to this procedure by now: Billy makes an announcement and the promises fall short of the anticipation. Hopefully, the boys (and girl?) will get things straight this time and just make a record they like.

Whatever happened to Billy's Chicago Songs album?

I think Billy has had the time to reflect on what did and didn't work in the Pumpkins and is eager to show the world a new vision he has for the group. The outcome will be one of the following: a.) The new album will be the great rock reunion we've all been waiting for or b.) The new album will be a load of buffed up electronica with the odd piano ballad thrown in. Now think about this, do you think that Billy would waste everybody's time and effort by putting out another solo-type record? I don't think so. I reckon he's putting together the 'official' sequel to Mellon Collie and it's going to rock you regardless of who is in the group!

If anyone's wondering what James Iha's been up to recently, pick up 'Monsieur Gainsbourg Revisited,' a tribute to Serge Gainsbourg with lyrics adapted into English, featuring Franz Ferdinand & Jane Birkin, Jarvis Cocker & Kid Loco, Tricky, Placebo, Portishead and The Kills, to name a few. James produced and played on two tracks (with help from his pal Adam Schlesinger): Cat Power and Karen Elson (Mrs. Jack White)'s duet of "Je T'aime Moi Non Plus" (retitled "I Love You (Me Either)") and Michael Stipe's "L'Hotel Particulier" a.k.a "L'Hotel." I'm not familiar with Gainsbourg's originals to see how they measure up, but on its own it's a pretty good album. Check it out at http://monsieurgainsbourg.artistes.universalmusic.fr/uk/02monsieur_gainsbourg_revisited.php

Machina was actually a good album. Whether it was comercially successful or not who gives a crap. I ad mitthough that id didn't like it when it first came out but I listened to it again like a year ago and suddenly I heard it differently. It was a good album, not great, but very good!
