well.... with keeping these three in mind: the "artwork" of their myspace page, their last album "machina", and that "zwan" thing, this is totally going to disappoint. don't get me wrong, in my opinion, the pumpkins WERE a great band. i still throw on my "zero" shirt once in a while. but i am definitely not getting my hopes up.

I would say that I am cautiously optimistic about this. I've been a huge fan forever and would like to believe that Billy got most of his experimenting out over the last few years. Probably not, though. Either way, I'll end up buying it and hoping for the best.

In my opinion, a "reunion" includes all original band members, period.
I think Billy and Jimmy are both very talented and I'm glad they're making new music, but I think trying to recapture old magic is dangerous, especially with half the band.

Can you still call yourself a Smashing Pumpkins fan if Mellon Collie, Gish and Siamese Dream are some of your favorite albums of all time but have lost interest with each consecutive release from Billy and Co.? I mean there are some great songs thrown in here and there, but the consistancy is lacking.
I felt Future Embrace was bloated and cheesy. Machina I/II had some really cornball lyrics. Zwan was Billy on Jesus and Prozac, while not bad, not great.
I really really want this release to be good. Though I don't think Billy has been writing for his own voice in the last 10 years. Pretending it's more melodic than it is. Maybe he should gracefully retire to producing and songwriting. Or start a band with a different lead.

I liked Zwan. Still pop it in every once in a while. thefutureembrace even had it's moments, notably Walking Shade (by my calculations). Machina II had some really good stuff on it too...but like the person said earlier the consistency is seriously lacking.

i love the pumpkins but machina I was one of the most horrible albums i ever had to hear. its in a box somewhere, far seperated from my actual collection. reminds me of maladroit by weezer... how could a band that wrote such a great album write such a shit album. machina II was decent but seemed thrown together. if only he had taken the best from both and made one decent album, maybe we wouldn't be here bashing them now.

Well, that's because Machina II *was* just thrown together. Take a collection of old B-sides, re-record 'em, put 'em on the internet and a few vinyls... that's what you get.
Rarely am I sentimental, but truly Billy Corgan has struck me as one of the greatest rock musicians of the past 15 years. I was enthralled by everything from Gish to Adore, and although Machina wasn't nearly as memorable (the tracks all smacked of same-ness to me), I enjoyed Zwan for what it was. Even if Billy had to insist that Jesus played back-up guitar.
His solo album, though, was a flop in my mind. I eventually fell in love with precisely three tracks -- "Mina Loy (M.O.H.)", "A100" and especially "The CameraEye," the latter of which I thought was one of his most hypnotic pieces yet, and perhaps the best realization of what he's been trying to do with this style since Adore. But that was it. The rest withered in my mind.
Being sentimental about the Pumpkins as I am, though, I can't help but be hopeful for Zeitgeist. Although Corgan doesn't have the demons nowadays that drove him to obsessive excellence with the likes of Siamese Dream, *and* although Jesus is now his apparent co-pilot, I still dream that he can tap into his inner Corgan psyche and bring back the magic that once was. Chamberlain, possibly his best muse, is a good start. Who knows who else will join the fray?

yeah pumpkins were probably the best band of the nineties, i thought Adore was pretty good in its own way, it had some great songs on it, but Machina was indeed all "same sounding" except the everlasting gaze, which was the biggest wooden horse since forever...if at least they'd had the decency to put it somewhere else than the FIRST TRACK...
anyway i don't know quite what to think about this reunion thing...like pretty much everyone, dreading the album, looking forward to the shows, i guess...

But from Corgan's point of view, why give up your band? From his standpoint, even the name of The Smashing Pumpkins is his special child.
I am a fan but I do realize... it seems like Billy sabotages himself by being an asshole to reporters and very vague. If all his stuff is "inside jokes" to toy with people, how does he expect mass success?
Hopefully this album will put Billy back where he feels he belongs, commercially and at least artistically.
If the band broke up due to Iha, as Billy claims, then this album should be stress-free and hopefully a lot better than past efforts, worrying about Darcy and James.

Billy and Jimmy are all you need for the Smashing Pumpkins. Billy practically did Gish and Siamese himself, except the drumming parts. I would love to have D'arcy and James back, but if I have to I could live without them being in the band. Smashing Pumpkins were great until the end. Machina is an awesome album, and theFutureEmbrace was a nice piece too. Billy has more to give and he will give it to us 110%.

The Cure never kept all the original members. Only Robert Smith and Simon Gallup - the functional equals of Corgan and Chamberlain - have been mainstays. And many of the better Cure albums happened more than 10 years after their inception ("Kiss Me" and "Disintigration"...even "Wish").

It's really sad to see, Smashing Pumpkins used to be fucking awesome, then they started spluttering and releasing shit. For this album to be great would require an complete 180 from what Billy's been doing over the last few years. I don't see this as anything to look forward to.

I thought it was only half of the members too (so it really isn't the Smashing Pumpkins) until someone reminded me Siamese Dream was entirely written by Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlain except one song: Mayonaise. And the entire cd was also produced mostly by Billy Corgan so in reality Zeitgeist is very much a Smashing Pumpkins album. The only difference you could really say between the two is that the lineup has changed for the tour.
IMO Siamese Dream is one of the best albums so that says a lot about Billy Corgan and Jimmy Chamberlain. If you think their new cd sucks (which I don't) then you can blame it on the fact that maybe BC and JC are not as good anymore but not because James Iha and Darcy are gone.
