Someone May Be Wincing Over This One

If you've avoided the Shins leak in favor of securing the forthcoming record the legit way, you may wanna head to iTunes asap. Late yesterday, we started receiving a flood of emails like this one from reader Mike, whose definite-article omitting iTunes searching helped him stumble on a happy accident(?): Wincing The Night Away (and a bonus track) available two weeks early! Mike writes:

As you may have noticed, iTunes is plugging the fact that you can pre-order Wincing the Night Away for when it is officially released on January 23rd. Well, they seem to have screwed something up...because if you just do a band search for "Shins" you see an option pop up to buy the whole album, which includes the "bonus track" "Nothing at All" which you're supposed to get for buying early.

If you try buying the whole album, you're given the pre-order runaround, so you're best served with the "shins" search, snappin' it up track by track. (And "Nothing At All" is solid.) iPhone's awesome, but Apple's so busy with Macworld they're not paying attention to the storefront! Silly Jobs.

Some albums do appear on iTunes in advance of their store releases. Maybe this was on purpose to create buzz, hence Stereogum is talking about it.

Bravo to The Shins, fantastic album!

Not the first time iTunes has sold an album before it's release date. I bought Peter, Bjorn and John's album "Writer's Block" off of iTunes in late November when it's official stateside release is not until February. Writer's Block has since been pulled from the iTunes store.

Deerhoof is up, too. No fancy tricks with that one, though-- you can just buy it as if it's supposed to be out.

Nothing at All should have been on the album as should have the alternate version of spilt needles. Sea Legs, I think is terrible.

'Nothing at All' sounds a bit too much like their cover of 'We Become Silhouettes'. Catchy enough, but not album material. I agree that 'Sea Legs' is a horrible song. For me, this album falls apart in the second half. Still love this band though.

If only.

Well thanks to some kind of site hiccup, I now look like a raving lunatic. Maybe I'll post one more time about how much I don't like Sea Legs...

The only thing that made me wince was the Garden State reference. Oy.

Update it no longer works songs still show up when you search for The Shins but when you try to purchase them it says no longer available.

"the" is the definite article, not an indefinite article (such as "a" or "an") ... just in case anyone cares.

The people that run the itunes music store are idiots. I'm sure that's how it happened.

Well, what an easy mistake to make. Nothing At All I agree should be on the album. Sea Legs is a strong track on the album imo.

Mike,

thanks for the deerhoof tip - you're right, no problems at all getting the full record. track 3 is the best so far.

leaks that still benefit the artist - amazing!

'nothing at all' was a b-side to the phantom limb single, in case anyone cares.

I just have one question - when was a Shins song on the Sopranos?
