South Park Pays Homage To Heavy Metal
No, not the entire musical genre -- we're talking about the Canadian animated film inspired by the "adult fantasy" magazine of the same name. (Jog your memory with the NSFW original trailer.) Any John Candy, Eugene Levy, or Harold Ramis fans out there? If you recall, Sammy Hagar wrote the title track -- it appeared in last night's episodes, along with a couple other tunes from the movie. As wee children, we remember thinking the flick was really racy -- skimpy leather, out-sized breasts, violence, out-sized breasts. Never saw the sequel Heavy Metal 2000, so we might have missed a few of South Park's references, but then, the official description says it's a "homage to the 1981 film" and that "the boys are trying to get Kenny off the latest drug craze that's captured the junior high and under set." You can watch it in it's entirety at the SP site. (Fittingly, it's titled "Major Boobage.") Also, there's a David Fincher-directed Heavy Metal animated film in the works. We'd call a third feature excessive, but this is Heavy Metal.

just watched the ep – pretty damn funny. My dad drew underground comics in the late 70s before I was born and I remember seeing stuff like this around the house growing up – space fantasy cheesiness and an abundance of tits. Awesome

Heave Metal changed my life. Anyone too young to remember probably has pretty limited tastes in music anyway so rather than dismissing the story, try using it to broaden your horizons and then you will be less douchey. Capishe??

Umm, John Coltrane made quite a few albums before I was born, but I'm still aware of them. In fact, I can still go to the store and buy them or, heck, go to the internet and download them. "Heavy Metal" may have come out when I was 4 years old, but I still appreciate its place in the music and popular culture cannon.
Last time I checked this was a music website, which means that its content appeals to music fans of any age (theoretically). Speaking of which, the film on this subject that really should be required viewing is "Heavy Metal Parking Lot."

The movie totally sucked compared to what the magazine was doing at the time, and was a huge disappointment to many Heavy Metal fans. Even the stories that they supposedly took from the mag were dumbed down to the point where they were barely recognizable. Some of the most brilliant comic work ever was published in late 70s Heavy Metal, much of it from Europeans like Moebius, Druillet and Caza. Of course, the mag was eventually sold to people who've since turned it into moronic garbage that makes even the 1981 movie look brilliant by comparison.

I will admit, though, that the best thing about the Heavy Metal movie was the soundtrack. They even included some Blue Oyster Cult (although from after they'd already peaked.)

Yes I agree the jackass who criticizes things he knows nothing about will never realize what he missed by being born too late. Back in those days not everything was accessible through the click of a mouse and it took true fans to show real interest in sci-fi and fantasy. None of the awful music the current generation has to settle for can hold a candle to many of the songs on that soundtrack. They used to make great entertainment without the aid of CGI. Have some respect for the people who paved the roads which your generation completely ran into a dead end.
