Speaking In Tongues About LOST
As soon as Under Byen wrapped up their awesome set at Merc last night (post TK), it seemed like everyone we spoke to was off to do the same thing: check in with Sawyer, Kate, and Jack! Yeah, we're pathetic, but you KNOW you wanna talk about LOST. Did you catch the Talking Heads tidbit in the show's mind-blowing opening sequence? Stereogum-reader Moshav writes:
I'm sure somebody out there can send a picture of it, but in LOST last night, girl picks out a CD to play. Although Petula Clark's "Downtown" ends up playing, the CD liner notes and back sleeve are clearly the Talking Heads' Speaking in Tongues. In that split second, I was half hoping and half dreading that a certain naive melody was about to play. Those are some sharp eyes! We were proud of ourselves for noticing that the book club was reading Stephen King. So what's up with the CD cover bait-and-switch? Is it a clue? And The Others -- are we supposed to hate them? Or sympathize? And how do they know so much?

The suspense was tolerable when we were playing catch-up on Seasons One and Two. Now we're just fucked.

probably just a rights issue. couldn't afford talking heads so they went back a dubbed in another song.

I'd imagine just a rights issue, or more likely a PA or producer or someone on the show wanted to give a Talking Heads shout out. They know that Lost fans are really good at catching these things.
What a great episode though eh? Steven King's Carrie was the book club book. Funny because he is such a huge fan of the show.

And.. one of the book club members only had four toes! I hope nothing in Lost is a coincidence, otherwise I'll end up feeling like I've wasted my time being completely addicted to it.

From lostpedia.com:
"The CD That Juliet places in her stereo is actually a dualdisc CD/DVD with the serial of "JN 94743". This serial belongs to the album "Okemah and the Melody of Riot", by artist "Son Volt". This album was released in 2005. The CD is taken from the jewel case for the album "Speaking In Tongues" by artist "Talking Heads""

No, I'm guessing "Downtown" was the song they wanted to play, considering it matches well with the 70s-bubble-pop that opened season 2 (a Mama Cass song).

The sequence was badly acted character development: Anyone who recognizes the case is supposed to expect the line/sentiment "home is where I want to be" and instead we meet a woman-- whose relationship/marriage to ben/henry gale, we later learn, is dissolving or has dissolved; most likely with it her passion for her homelife and island life, as well-- yearning for someplace she can't go, for the excitement of downtown/the city. The opening scene indicated/hinted she's dissillusioned with her life on the island and the producer's little bait and switch was just another hint at that.

oops, "disillusioned" - that's what I get for trying to sound smart.

it looked like the CD she put in was also the Dualdisc version, which wasn't released till late last year. Even though the scene in question was from a flashback scene from 2004.
Boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder!

"Downtown" was written by one Tony...Hatch.

omg freaking hilarious.
I've been burned by JJ Abrams before man with Alias (the stupid damned Rimbaldi sidestory? jesus louise) so I'm jaded. But still completely, totally, utterly, hopelessly hooked.

The Others long ago became outcasts, hopelessly removed greater society.
This happened largely because the Hanso Foundation brainwashed them into believing Talking Heads sound like Petula Clark. Also, they think Bowie sounds like Paul Anka.

Didn't they pass a statue a while back while boating around the island that only had four toes?

I noticed the same thing, and even went back in the buffer to confirm it. There, plain as day, is the multicolored album cover back sleeve, and the words "TALKING HEADS SPEAKING IN TONGUES" were printed on the edge.
I expected "Burning Down the House," so I didn't get the "Downtown" reference (or why that girl appeared to start crying about it). I don't watch this show and don't know who any of these people are, so I assumed it must have made sense to regular watchers. Guess not.

"Didn't they pass a statue a while back while boating around the island that only had four toes?" - Indeed, hadn't thought of that, interesting.
I managed to get it whilst I was at Uni today, and I have to say I was rather disappointed with it. I'm much more interested in the original clan than "the others". I feel its going to get too confusing flicking between the two camps every episode (I guess that's what they'll do anyway) and the writers are going to mess up along the way.

the worst news i've heard about this season of lost is that after the first six episodes, thats right, six, the show doesn't come back until february. its going to kill me.
hopefully prison break stays on and 24 starts sometime soon.

I'm so glad someone confirmed this for me, because I saw the Speaking in Tongues cover art too! I still have the original copy of the CD that I bought in 1985 or so. (Yeah, I'm old.)
Last season they kicked off the season with a record player playing a Mama Cass song from the 70s. It would have been fitting to start off this season with a CD player playing a song from the 80s, right? So I was intrigued when I saw the Heads CD cover . . . and pretty disappointed when it was "Downtown". They blew it.
Regardless, you need to take freaking notes while watching this show. Everything is a subtle reference or a subliminal message, it's crazy. So if you missed it, or want to take more notes, you can watch the full ep online (or just the first 5 minutes, which is the best part):
