Speaking Of O.C. Music
Last Clap Your Hands Say Yeah post, promise.
NY Times chills with the band it compared to Neutral Milk Hotel (?!) earlier this month...
The buzz even persuaded producers of The O.C., which is known for its indie rock soundtracks, to ask Clap Your Hands to perform on the show. The band turned it down. Too much popularity, after all, can diminish one's credibility.Fair enough. But can we start a rumor Matisyahu is booked for Seth's Chrismukkah Bar Mitzvukkah?

Although they don't want to be called sell-outs, I think it would be a good opportunity for them.

They've obviously been reading Pitchfork:
Song used in "The O.C.", +5; Band appears on "The O.C.", -10
Score = 0
At least they stuck to it when they said they wouldn't give a song to the OC. But I think it's pretty unsurprising that the producers asked the band for the song. I would have thought Arcade Fire would at least have a song on there, but maybe they turned it down and I didn't know about it.

Fuck those O.C. hos. CYHSY is just keeping their dignity.

for a band whose music is so motherfucking obvious (it's basically an indie instrumentation of blink 182)
to turn down that much publicity is really cheesy and sad
Score = 0
If they are cutting out the middleman in not wanting to deal with a record label and just a distribution company, it doesn't seem to be a stretch that they turned this down

Their Chicago show on Friday was killer.

"to turn down that much publicity is really cheesy and sad"
Oh, screw off.
To not want to be on The OC is cheesy and sad? Well, we've certainly reached a new and special milestone in our notions of doing well in the music business.
Thanks also for mentioning Blink-182. It reminds me of the time they made fun of Fugazi for still charging only $10 per show.

Radiohead would turn down The O.C too.

Neutral Milk Hotel? WTF?
I was also at the Chi-town CYHSY/National show. Great show...

the flaming lips really rocked the peach pit afterdark. just saying is all

i totally respect them for this, but seriously, if you have something to offer and say as a musician you shouldn't be afraid of being popular. otherwise you are just preaching to your own little choir in the corner.

They turned it down. Interesting. They're either all rich (likely), or have realized the fact that the O.C. is a piece of crap dressed up in indie rock clothes.
Score = 0
The article this appeared in mentioned that singer Alec Ounsworth still lives with his mom when he's not couch surfing in NYC, so I'd scratch the "they are all rich." Maybe they feel like The O.C. hasn't been good since the end of season 1.

Bad move. Since they are going to avoid having a record deal and with a distribution company directly, there's going to be a lot more risk w/r/t moving CDs. Without a record company, they won't have anyone to market it. What if they get stuck with a boatload of inventory? I wonder if they're financially responsible for it...

Consider it scratched, Jed. They seem like normal dudes. They practice in the same rehearsal studio as me, two doors down. Actually, funny, I heard them practicing for months and was always like "that's kind of cool, keyboards are underused these days". Not long ago they were coming out practice at the same time I was and I told them I liked their stuff and what was their name and I was like "ohhhhh, YOU'RE them. You guys are famous now, you know". Pretty modest dudes.
One of them has to have some money if they're willing to turn something like that down. I'm serious. I dislike the OC almost as much as Sex & The City and I'd probably not be able to turn it down, because I'm broke.

Hogwash. Sam Coomes from the 90s Indie Band Quasi/Elliot Smith grew up in middle to upper middle class Mission Viejo in the OC and not the steets of Portland or Seattle or whatver the bio says. OC has it's share are disaffected albiet comfortable living youth too.
