Spoon Hang With Radiohead, Spend Two Days Taking Over The City

Ga was in the air in New York this week, and every time you looked around, there was Spoon: doing instores, getting horn-y on TV, playing in the rain, and drinking in the East Village. With Radiohead. That, indie rockers, is how you celebrate an album release. It helps that Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is great great great etc., and Spoon kicked off their feel-good tour with a "secret" stop at the Union Square Virgin Megastore. Not the coolest thing you ever heard? Fair enough, it is Union Square and the Virgin store, after all. But how about getting Gawker Stalked hanging with Colin and Ed of Radiohead on Tuesday night at a secret CD release party at Hi-Fi (the one night we don't go, obvs). You wish you were there so you could not talk to them and stare all night long, it's okay. There's always next time Radiohead and Spoon are getting drinks, right?

Wednesday night was more for Spoon's NYC victory tour, giving a little taste of "The Underdog" with a lot of brass on Letterman, after which they sped their way to Rockefeller park for a River To River show in the pouring rain. We didn't make it, but Rawkblog did, capturing this clip of the best alternate exit music (for The Sopranos) out there...

Those who weren't fortunate enough to be in Manhattan this week, fear not; Spoon may be coming to you! There's a show at Schuba's in Chicago on 7/13, and then a little gig at San Fransisco's Café Du Nord the following night -- though you SFers may wanna take note of this announcement from the Daniel gang:

SAN FRANCISCO, PART DEUX
There's been some confusion about how to get tickets to our no-longer-secret show at Café Du Nord on Saturday. Contrary to reports earlier in the week, Amoeba Records will NOT be giving away tix to this one, so your best bet is to show up bright & early at the door to assure entry. Once you do make it inside, we'll be doing a short signing after the show for the first 50 people that buy the record on the premises.
There ya go, NoCal folks. Bring your sleeping bags! And send us pictures.

The only trouble with Spoon is they kind of, you know... suck?

...and by "suck" you mean they just released the best album of the year, right? Just clarifying.

Honestly, I'm starting to scare myself with how in love with this band I've become. Anyone who doesn't at the very least *like* them either is deaf or mentally retarded (or both), I'm convinced.

They are Squeeze, only American and better.

Good album, not amazing like they all say. Horrible transition from upbeat song #1 into slow song #2. Nothing against the songs alone, but bad 1-2 punch for starting off an album.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

Simplistic Brilliance I tells ya. They rule. The Mrs is correct here - "If you don't like them you are retarded" ;)

Also, may I add the 2007 buzz adjective "grower" here?

good clip, it's almost sad to see spoon explode like this now with this album. I remember seeing them after their girls can tell lp at ACL and you could walk right up to the stage at any time and be in the front. I assume there will be many band wagoners after this album claiming their love for spoon

A great show. I have to say 'I Turn My Camera On' is better live. The new album is fine, but it'll be hard to trump Gimme Fiction. Oh Well. Spoon released one of the best rock albums of 2007. And it's a step down for them. That's impressive.

I think it's true that they're an un-not-likeable band for anybody with functioning ears, but I find them impossible to love, and the idea of camping out to get into a live show of theirs is ridiculous, as they are a really boring live band.

Boring live, boring in the studio, boring in a house, boring on a mouse, boring. Colorless. Drab. Dull.

But they're not as horrific as Radiohead. Gotta give 'em that much.

I don't get why everyone says Gax5 is a "grower" of an album. If anything Gimme Fiction is more of a grower than the new record. I not only agree that the placement of "The Ghost of You Lingers" is horrible, but I think it is the worst song on the album and brings it down from being a perfect 10 in my eyes (don't crucify me). I just can't get past that constant and annoying piano tone.

Anyway, can you say Radiohead w/ Spoon opening on their next American tour?!

GIRLS CAN TELL is still the best spoon.
