Stefani Goes Solo

Finally! NoDoubtWeb.com ripped this first Gwen solo single off the radio. It was written with Former Non Blonde Linda Perry.

Gwen Stefani - "(Take A Chance) You Stupid Ho""What You Waiting For?"

(Thanks Cath for the heads up.)

Songwriter/producer Dallas Austin tells MTVNews:

Everybody is anticipating [Gwen's CD], and it's everything they think it's going to be. It's myself, Andre 3000, Nellee Hooper and Linda Perry [producing]. It's almost like an '80s mixtape. We go back to some electro-pop, to some breakdance/b-boy stuff, then it goes into stuff like the Cure, then kind of alternative, like the Pretenders.

Gwen's like a little eighth grader, in a way. She's a sweetheart. She's so used to writing with the band and being in No Doubt — in that mode. This is a new experience for her. We had a chance to collaborate on some really good stuff. She's incredible.

Awww. Love Angel Music Baby drops 11/23.

UPDATE: Is this song Weezer's "Hash Pipe" x Hitch Hike's "Travel Girl"? I don't know; I've never heard "Travel Girl." But the 1st verse melody is totally ripped from "Hash Pipe."

Let's leave The Missing Persons in 1982, shall we?

That was beyond terrible.. I am once again thankful to not be a No Doubt fan.

"It's almost like an 80's mixtape"

Uh oh. The 80's were so tres gay. Bleh.

THIS part sounds super horrendous:

"We go back to some electro-pop, to some breakdance/b-boy stuff, then it goes into stuff like the Cure, then kind of alternative, like the Pretenders."

Oh. My. Gawd. It sounds really horrendous.

Lord help us.

Get over the description; the song is actually pretty catchy and I can see this album actually producing some interesting stuff.

Being pretentious was so 2003.

Hasn't she been a de facto solo artist for a while now, anyway? I'm not a huge fan of No Doubt, but at least their earlier stuff actually sounded like a BAND. The most recent No Doubt material has struck me as mostly Gwen + Big Name Producer (with band members hanging out in the studio while Big Name Producer programs the drum machine).

As for the 80s thing... there are bands that have taken elements of 80s music and really RAN with it. But most of these neo-retro artists that people seem to be fawning over these days... there is just something so banal and calculated about their appropriation of the music. I guess anything is better than fucking nü-metal.

Eh. Nothing that good. I'm on the fence about how I feel. Parts of the song aren't too bad. However Gwen should really learn the limitations of her voice.

I don't think it's horrific at all. It's catchy. But from the way the press-- and Gwen herself-- has been hyping the upcoming release, I think it's going to be a bit of a let-down.

And yeah, can she stop the annoying Betty Boop voice thingy? And yeah #2-- the "little eighth grader" comment is kinda a bit snarky, right?

i'm a gwen fan and i'm bitterly disappointed...this song is crap! the only thing that could save it ( = make it a hit) is a good video (though that still wouldn't make it a good song). if this is the best thing off that album, i'm really thinking of not buying it. makes brit brit's cover of "my prerogative" sound great =P
too bad. i'll use those $$ on the new elliott smith album (now THAT will be money well spent). thank goodness i've still got fiona...judging by this song, gwen will no longer rank in my chart (yeah, i know, she'll be devastated, haha).

I'm still waiting to hear the new song by Gwen, I have read the lyrics and have to say that they are so her! I just moved up here to colorado springs from san antonio tx about a month ago. I have not been able to pick up on everything that is going on with Gwen and her solo cd. So far I have read alot of good things about it but have also read alot of nasty things being said by some people. I wont pass judgement on any of them because I don't know any of you. All I have to say is that if you are truly not a No Doubt fan then you should'nt have wasted any of your time checking out her new song. What were you thinking? Come on if you really knew Gwen like I do then her new song would'nt be such a drag to you. GET OVER IT AND MOVE ON WITH YOUR LIFE!!!!!! Stop hating on Gwen and give her the credit that she truly deservers!

I think it's fine. It's fun, catchy; not all music is supposed to be world changing, and u guys aren't what i would consider cultural critics either, so don't be so overly pretentios. It's the kind of song u play when ur getting ready to go out. It's ok to be tacky sometimes, life is not a HUGE soap opera.

All you haters just don't get it! She writes about her life, what she's dealing with and feeling. Its obvious in Tragic Kingdom, Rock Steady and now with L.A.M.B. The prelude is a tribute to her bandmates the rest is her challenge. I think its hot and fresh. Not like anything else out there. I personally rather listen to something upbeat then to something that brings me down. Can't wait for the album, this shit is going to fly off the shelves!!

Ok the first time i heard this song i was in a dressing room trying on clothes and i thought the song was totally weird i actually said out loud "what the hell is this shit?" - i didn't like it. But now after i hearing it more and more i think it's pretty cool. The lyrics are horrid but it's rad to dance to and i know it's gonna make millions. I think what people have to realize is that this is DANCE MUSIC not NO DOUBT and that's what they have to get use to. As for the lyrical content everyone knows dance music never has good lyrics its all about a catchy beat - What you waitin for? definitely has it. Next time i go to a club i know it's gonna be playing and you better believe i'm gonna be dancing......Gwen Rocks!

Well it's not necessarily profound but since Rock Steady that Gwen has become a little more shallow, and thats cuz of something u prejudiced discriminators haven't taken seriously, that she's happily married now and got over a nightmarish episode of her life (which im sure all of the people here know about). That's a subliminal reason why her new stuff sounds so danceable and lite, it's because she's happy again. Call it overproduced, morbidly frivolous or whatever bluff u want but with any face of herself Gwen comes up, she gets high in the clouds, and all of you dissers have to admit that, she did so with Rock Steady and so she's gonna do it with L.A.M.B. Plus you're only judging the album because of just one freekin song, take as a fact that the synergy of collaborators in the CD sounds very promising and dynamic, come on which female artist in the industry these days can cojure such different people as Andree 3000, Martin Gore and Linda Perry in one album??!??! Just get over it, Gwen's got the talent, the versatility, and the star power to make everyone a fan, and I'm convinced shes gonna get very far with her newly chosen path.

Catchy and just FUN. Energetic without being whiney. Considering all the emo crap about 25 year old boys throwing temper tantrums because their 13 year old jr high school girlfriends didn't invite them to the dance is old and lame. If this song energizes you for even 5 minutes after it's done then it's better than 99% of the crap on the radio today.

And also in what seems to be an era of female vocalists covering songs, and covering them with seemingly a desire to sound utterly awful, something new and fun is welcomed.

Gwen's new single is catchy and fun to listen to, that's for sure! For the people that don't like it, that's cool because your opinion doesn't have to be the same. However, aside from intelligent criticism, I just don't see the need to flame Gwen for the song. There are many kinds of music, from the extremely thought provoking and brilliant stuff to mere head boppers. After all, if it weren't for songs like this, what would we dance do in clubs, or listen to when we just wanna maybe feel a sugar rush, or while driving down the highway and need some excitement? Gwen's created something that isn't earth shatteringly original, but it's a great tune that makes you shake yer booty! For what it is, it's an A+ song. Go Gwen! Can't wait till the album comes out, I need a good booty shaker.

In my opinion, she wrote the song about herself, like she has been doing. Nothing diffrent here except how she sees herself. Think about the lyrics -- she is singing about how part of her is nervous about this album, and part of her is confident. She sings about trying to talk herself out of being nervous.

Take the lyrics, "Take a chance, you might grow ... Take a chance, you stupid ho." This is the more confident side of her telling the less confident side to take a chance. The nervous side responds with, "Naturally, I'm worried if I go it alone," while the confident side retorts, "You never know, it could be great." And in my opinion, it will turn out great!

You don't have to like every song by an artist to be a fan, and you don't hate every song of an artist you dislike. You just have to be true to what you like, and be honest about what you don't. This song is a lot diffrent than her other material, but thats fine, people change. It might put off a lot of old fans who only liked her older stuff, but it also might attract a lot of new fans! You never know, you just have to wait and see.

And lastly, about it being a dance song? Gwen said herself -- "There's a certain kind of record I'm trying to make; it comes from something that we used to listen to growing up, so it's more of a dance kind of thing." As quoted from MTV news in 2003, while she was still writing the song.

I think its an awsome song...specially for her first solo song. I've been a no doubt fan for as long as i remember and gwen stefani definetly had to be one of my idols. For any of you people out there that think its the shits... you try to be solo in 2004... i bet you wont do so good.

I'm confused, why does anybody even listen to the lyrics?...this is some "shake your pudankadunk/dont look for eternal enlightenment" ear candy...if you want a reason to live listen to jack johnson or jefferey gaines, but for the rest of us who dont hear voices in our heads this song provides a welcome respite from the creed-like crapola permeating our airwaves

Honestly - a new endeavor, she can afford to take the chance because she has earned the respect of all in the industry. Not a Mickey Mouse clubber teen that can't get her $hit together. No identity crisis like removal of piercings to all-of-a-sudden "grow up" or 5-minute relationships with anyone who's anyone. She is a confident, beautiful woman with nothing to lose. Even if you don't like the new stuff - you've got to admit she created her own empire. She knows how to market herself - I'd choose to be her over anyone else in music. Frankly - I think she's made more of herself than Madonna.

Think about it - you should respect that she was not an overnight success, and that she won't fail at anything she does...

Ok, personally....I LOVE THIS. I think it's just fun to listen to. I'm not really too concerned about who else she sounds like or whatever, or if it is really astounding, ground-breaking music....I just listen and decide if I like or not...it's a good time.

Gwen has done better, but this song is still good because it deals with her and her feelings. Plus, it's unique; I haven't heard any recent music that sounds like it on the radio. And not everything on the radio has to have a deep message or revelation about life. This is just about Gwen being Gwen and dealing with her insecurities like anybody else, using her music as a means to find confidence.

Holy hell, that's my generation? ^ Johnny kant reed rite speel o formyulayt opinyunz.

I like it more than I hate it. It's ridiculously catchy, and it's a pop fodder, so I'm not expecting genius and neither is she. At the same time, not to be a feminazi, but her casual use of 'stupid ho' is not only downright stupid, but rather insulting too. Sorry to get all afterschool special on you, but women calling themselves whores is never cool, especially in such a bizarrely out of context line. It's just meant to be controversial and draw attention to the hook, but if she wants so desperately to get folks to listen to the lyrics, she should spend time making them real lyrics instead of misogynistic crap. Whatever, I'm overanalyzing pop music.

If I have to hear a song over the air waves for the next four months, I could think of worse songs. Like the Lindsay Lohan song, God bless her.

Considering the changes they've made in their style as a band over the past 10 years, it's only natural that her solo endeavor would be even more experimental. I personally think that she's an amazing artist. She doesn't play the sexed up pop diva bullshit, nor does she follow the ever so, "I'm so indie I'm too cool for you all" crap... She's loving life, and and like all thing taking it on with a sense of humor and some wicked style. She just fucking rocks, get over it!

You PEOPLE ARE DULL! "What are you waiting for" is really creative track. It is great dance music! If you LISTEN to what Gwen has said about this solo deal you would know that it is intended to be a complete departure from what No Doubt does.
She wanted to create a fun dance album. What better way than going back to the retro, early rap and techno genres. I loved the "Alice in Wonderland" slant on her video. Awesome Video!!! I CAN'T wait until the CD is released:)

I still love Gwen, I always will, and this single kicks ass. The video is awesome too, but knowing me, anything Alice in Wonderland will satisfy me. The Alice outfit is really cute too. One thing -- I don't see how this track can be compared to Hash Pipe. The beats are alot higher and I don't find the rythm similar to Hash Pipe's at all. Meh...

If none of you live in nyc- then you will not understand this song. ITS BRILLIANT, and about time that humor has taken to the airwaves. I think Gwen set out to piss some people off, and to go over their heads with this song, and from the way its looking- she has successfully done it.
If you watch the video you might understand as well, what she is doing.

Some of you on this board take yourselves way too seriously.
The chick made a booty-shake record for goodness sake. Get over it.
Good for her, for making different kinds of records and ENJOYING MUSIC for whatever it is. Some of us would do better by ourselves to open up and do the same.
J-

p.s.: BTW, some of you complaining that the big name producers do everything for ND are flat wrong -- Tony and Tom were playing, producing and programming a great deal of their later material as well. Read the credits.

I loved the song and video. ^^ I can see where she's getting it all from --- Japanese pop culture. Take a look at Hello Kitty, anime, and all of their idols (what we'd simply call "singers") . . . and maybe you'll start to understand. o_O

I thought the lyrics were random, pop, and pretty cool. I really liked the whole "Alice in Wonderland" theme for the video.

But that's just my thoughts. Love the tune!
