Stereogum ... Now With More Throat Singing

My coworker sent me this link to a new covers CD by "Tuvan throat singing punk band" Albert Kuvezin and Yat-Kha. Russian throat singing (called xöömej) is hard to explain. According to some website I just lost the link to: "The mouth cavity is shaped to select overtones of the fundamental produced by the vocal folds, resulting in the simultaneous singing of multiple pitches." Anyway, you might've heard of it 'cause Björk experimented with xöömej on her last album.

Hear the Tuvan throat singers tackle Joy Division.

And you thought Paul Anka's CD was weird.

The documentary Genghis Blues is a really good look at an american blues singer who travels to Tuva to perform in a throat singing competition. Its an amazing film.

The July issue of Mojo has a decent piece on Yat-kah and on how Russia tried to ban throat singing.
