Stereogum's 2008 Album Forecast

Stereogum's look ahead to 2008 in albums. There's a lot of 'em.

Welcome to our annual look at what we'll spend our bandwith on in the year ahead. We did something like this last year, but the exercise was radically different this time; it's amazing to look back and see how easy it was just to throw the list together off-the-cuff (just pick your favorite band and it seemed they had already announced an LP for '07). Also, it's pretty amazing to note how many of those LPs had already leaked before the new year. Are labels are getting a little smarter about plugging some of those leaks? Maybe, possibly, hopefully, hopefully not, etc.

Anyway, 2008's shaping up to be a little different, and not just in terms of our collective OiNKlessness. As of now, the year doesn't have nearly the same blockbuster appeal (no new Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, Shins, Bloc Party, Spoon, LCD Soundsystem, Interpol, et al to get everyone frothy -- oh, but did you hear there is a new Radiohead album in stores on January 1st!). Still, there's plenty of promise there if you look for it. We've already seen some bright spots, and haven't got around to blogging about some others (the new Beach House and Pattern Is Movement are on heavy rotation) ... and we wanted to make next year nice and easy on you. So after lots of research about the year ahead, we've learned a few things: there's a new Animal Collective EP out this April, Menomena's promising another full-length for '08, and when you're making a list as big as the one after the jump, your best friends go by the names Cut and Paste.

We're figuring you'll tell us anyway, so we won't even ask. Instead: let's put this thread to some concerted, declarative use, and make it a call to "what we're most psyched for in '08." And ... go.

Final Fantasy's Heartland, summer at the earliest. Los Campesinos!' Hold On Now, Youngster... has a UK release of 18th February, the Futureheads reappear in March, Portishead in April, and what about the promised My Bloody Valentine material?

Does the Radiohead release on the 1st qualify it for "Best of" 2008 lists as well?

Why is 50 Cent releasing an album in March when he just released one? I'm really looking forward to Coldplay and The Fray though.

I see new Death Cab, but when is there supposed to be new Postal Service? I could've sworn that second album was "being recorded" way back in Feb. 2007, and yet I've heard approximately 0 about it since then (aside from the wildly false rumor that there'd be a surprise release on Christmas). Will there ever be a new Postal Service album, and if so, when?

I wouldn't hold your breath on another Blur album. It sounds like relations amongst the band have decayed yet again, with Albarn going so far as to insist that the only reason Graham wants back in the band now is because his solo career is faltering and he wants the money. This has caused a rift between Damon and the other three, and it seems less and less likely they will work together again, but certainly not in the near future.

Also remasters of Wish, Mixed Up, and Disintegration. I'm curious to see how Wish turns out. That album always sounded veiled and fuzzy to me, but I hope they don't crank up the compression and loudness and kill any dynamics.

i believe that some time early in 2008 Daniel Johnston's Lost and Found will finally be released in the US. It's been out since 2006 in the UK, so really i guess it's already been out.. you could certainly find it on any p2p network.. bat for lashes has begun recording a new album, so perhaps natasha will have a new one soon, grand ole party are coming out with their first album soon, something that should be a hit with the likes of karen o fans... are the black kids going to release a full length?... badly drawn boy mentioned releasing something at the end of 2007, so perhaps that will actually be extended into 2008 instead.. boy least likely to has almost finished recording, so that's something to look forward to, the faint recorded starting in august...neko case is almost done with her new album.. i hope that if noah and the whale chose to really put out their album, that it would be soon and get a full release... black lips?.. i mean they're prolific.... oh, those are a few that i would rumor or that i am at least hopeful for... oh, and yes, i'm pretty sure as well that there will be a new antony and the johnsons in "spring 2008"
plus all the new bands coming out right now are really going to swing in for 2008 like many bands did for 2007...
that's the most i can think of for the current lack of releases....

For Bono that message is both personal and political. He hopes to have a new U2 album out next year. "We have enough material for two albums but it has to be extraordinary. And I think we've got that."

"I would have to say that the year looks pretty bleak for music"

You're killin me. Is this "cool detachment?"

If this is bleak, what would make it a good year to look forward to?

I don't know, hope springs eternal for me; every band I'm looking forward to this year could release their opus, the zenith of their careers. Until they're actually released, they're potential life-changing events.

Can the moderator/blogger please add these?

The Music Tapes -- For Clouds and Tornadoes (2008)
Elbow -- The Seldom Seen Kid (March 2008)
Apollo Sunshine -- Mysteries of the Old Soul (Summer)
Ours -- Dancing for the Death of an Imaginary Enemy (March 2008)
Frequency Fall -- Everything Now (early 2008)

Three Mile Pilot -- no title (2008)

"I don't know if anyone else likes, knows, or updates this post BUT Cloud Cult is releasing a new album in April. They have not said what the name is"

I care! That is great news, as I enjoyed the last two quite a bit. Nice!

"I caught an Ours show about 4 months ago.
They did some KILLER new stuff. Gonna be one of the best rock albums of the year. Ours. Remember it."

Also great to hear, I've been looking forward to #3 for a while now, and it seems the time is almost at hand.

While, most of my favorites put out records in '07, it still seems as though there's plenty in store for '08...

+ Immensely excited for Cloud Cult's new one.
+ Travis is heading back to record in Feb, though no expected release date yet.
+ The Everyday Visuals mentioned at a show a new one in '08, though no date.
+ Excited to hear Margot & The Nuclear So and So's, MGMT, and Eno's influence on Coldplay.

Also, it's nice to see Indianapolis band Margot get some recognition.

Check out Everthus the Deadbeats, another indy-based band. I'm not in the band, just think they're primed for a breakthrough.

"Wolf Parade's a little iffy, since they still need to get in the studio."

Actually, they finished recording sometime in the fall. It's being mixed in January, and they want to have it out by May at the latest.

On a related note, to "Rumour Mill" you can add Handsome Furs. They're hoping to do a quick recording in January, and then release it sometime during the year.

If Girl Talk's new one is really going to be out on Jan. 8, then that's fucking awesome.

Fuck, 2008 is going to rule. The new MBV should be good. The Presets are releasing a new record as well next year.

Also:
Genghis Tron - Board Up This House (February 19 2008)
Fuck Buttons - Street Horrrsing (February 11 2008)
The Long Blondes - Couples (April 7 2008)
Sebastien Tellier - Sexuality (February 2008)
Chris Clark - Turning Dragon (January 29 2008)
Death Angel - Killing Season (February 26 2008)
Lyrics Born - Everywhere at Once (March 18 2008)
James Pants - Rhythm Trax Vol. 1
Guilty Simpson - Ode to the Ghetto
Jason Forrest/DJ Donna Summer - Panther Tracks
Lee "Scratch" Perry - Repentance
Brian Jonestown Massacre - My Bloody Underground (?)

Lightning Bolt have been working on a new record since September this year, Big Boi's working on a new one, Geffen's apparently doing an "Odelay" 2-CD reissue, Mike Patton said that he was working on a new Fantomas record, David Tibet (Current 93) is putting out two records in mid-to-late '08 and the Ghostface/MF Doom collab is due out as well. I heard something about Khaela from the Blow working on a new one, but I'm not sure.

Black Kids' debut album? Anyone? And TVOTR?

Mew's third major label release is coming out really soon. It's on their myspace's blog that's being mixed and it's gonna be released in Europe in a couple of months. I hope it drops march/april! Frengers is just an amazing record, and the Kites might be some kinda difficult but it worths a lot.

Also there's the first Still's Art & Crafts release in March.

Cansei De Ser Sexy's second is also expected for march by SubPop. I'm hopping it gets an official release in Brazil, cause they have no contract with any brazillian record labels.

After Bonde's brak up, I think we're gonna receive a solo and Diplo-produced Marina Vello. And a Gorky's DJ-kicks album. Anyone interested?

Here in Brazil we're also expecting the first solo albums of both Rodrigo Amarante (the second voice in Devendra's "Rosa") and Marcelo Camelo (http://www.myspace.com/marcelocamelo), leaders of recently splited and our most loved band Los Hermanos (htt.

Amarante (http://www.myspace.com/rodrigoamarante) is actually recording with Nick Valensi and Fabrizzio Moretti of the Strokes. After "Rosa", "Diamond Eyes" (inclued on Acid Folk compilation by Devendra for Uncut) and "Evaporar" (on his myspace), I think he's gonna drop really good stuff.

Camelo's new song "Teo e a gaivota" is on his myspace. All acoustic, the song is pretty much alike some of his work on last Los Hermanos' record, "4". Some people says his album is already finished and it's out very soon.

For lovers of brazillian music, there's also Mombojó's third and the debut of Macaco Bong (think Explosions In The Sky meets At The Drive In).

from Illegal Art: no Girl Talk album until the Spring at the earliest. it will be released digitally as soon as it is mastered... and physically shortly after that. we thought Gregg might have a new album by the end of '07, but although he has more new material than he needs (from prepping live shows), there has been so little time with his schedule to do the meticulous editing needed for the final mixes ....
