Stream New Decemberists

More for your streaming pleasure. Listen to The Crane Wife at MTV's The Leak (via brooklynvegan). They've gone and infused a bit of prog and Pink Floyd into their chamber pop. A grower? Better than Picaresque? Either way, can't fault 'em their ambition.

I'm hearing a little Genesis and ELP. Love it so far!

uh...is this 'screw macs' day? I can't get it to work on safari or firefox. or is mtv just unable to make their website work properly again?

Wouldn't say a grower. It's solid, (except for the train wrecks "Perfect Crime" and "When the War Came"), but Picaresque is a goddamn hard album to follow up.

Not as good as the last two, but still pretty great. Oddly, they don't miss a beat when it comes to the stuff that breaks from their old style, but this makes some of the more ordinary Decemberists' fare ("Shankill Butchers," "Summersong") suffer a tiny bit by comparison.

They're fine, but they sound like songs that Meloy can write in his sleep, so they don't register like the "Crane Wife" (all parts), "the Island," or the immediately accessible "Valencia" and "Yankee Bayonet," which would sound just as at home on any Decemberists disc as "Butchers" and "Summersong," but are too catchy to ignore in any context.

Far better than Picaresque. It's the first Decemberist album I can listen to without getting annoyed or bored.

I think this album is amazing! And The Perfect Crime a train wreck?!? WTF that song is one of the jams of the years. It's such a Talking Heads influenced songs how can you not love it?

Quit Your Day Job: Ungdomskulen

The Bergen trio Ungdomskulen play proggy post punk, mixing chops and hooks with a sense of humor. But they don't sound like Primus. When I was in Norway a couple years ago, "Ungdomskulen" seemed to be on everybody's lips (or...

Premature Evaluation: Beck - Modern Guilt

It's been some time since we learned Modern Guilt, Beck Hansen's eighth album, would be some sort of psych rock minimalist '60s trip with Danger Mouse. Since then, we've gotten a look at the old-school jazz/Blue Note-style cover art and...
