Stream New Sean Lennon
After watching that theatrical trailer for his new record, we know you're dying to hear Sean's Friendly Fire (out 10/3) at VH1. Mac users may find themselves up a creek, but the album's lead track "Dead Meat" is also streaming at SeanOnoLennon's Myspace. Here's the vid:
Anyone catch him on Letterman last night? Sean wore a purple ascot and hit The Late Show with three strings, two background singers, and bassist in pigtails and a tux. And it actually sounded good! Dave asked him about "Dead Meat"'s meaning, to which Sean replied: "Kinda when you're mad at somebody, and you say, 'You're dead meat!' [Pause] It's an idiom." A profound idiom, that.
Kid Lennon started talking about each Fire song's accompanying film (and how the record was born from the death of his best friend, with whom his then-girlfriend had an affair), but TiVO thought I'd had enough.

I thought it sounded good too...my first thought was it sounded Jon Brion-y...but then I thought, does that just make it Beatles-y? Then I got a headache and had to lie down.

a complete no talent

VH1 WOULD be all over this. I'll pass.

The bassist was Trevor Dunn of Mr. Bungle/Fantomas/etc fame.

Stephen, good listening - Sean has been working with Jon Brion!
I think he's great. I've seen him play live a few times in recent years and he's a brilliant multi-instrumentalist. Can't wait to hear the new album. I'll be honest, I didn't care for his first one.

He just needs a lightning bolt on his forehead...

Sean definately got Lennons looks but Julian, I'm afraid got all the Lennon talent.

Horrible nasal-y voice. He wouldn't be on David Letterman if his name was Sean Jones.

I want to like him, I really do, but this video is making it damned difficult. still, I'll probably buy the album, especially since I loved "Into The Sun" when it first came out.

sings through his nose, like the song sorta .he will find he is more like mom and not father and brother i think.

Sorry I missed the Letterman show..I fell asleep AGAIN ugh! They all said in the 60s way beginning Beatles days that dad John was a "no talent" too. The man's legend will live forever. Looking forward to the CD and since I missed Letterman, I won't even watch the video yet..I like surprises :) Go for it Sean.. keep it real and just "Imagine". "Into the Sun' is awesome so I expect no less from the new CD. Kinda weird watching you grow up and see you revolve into a great talent in your right. Sending good karma your way for a platnum! Peace!

I can't believe you thought he sounded good on Letterman. The band, yes, the backup singers, yes.. his playing, probably passable. But the singing was pitiful. I literally thought to myself, gawd, Clay Aiken even has better singing talent than this. Poor Sean, whatever his real calling is, he's missing it.

It sounds like a nasaly Elliott Smith.

Julian Lennon's got less talent than the kiddies playing in Senses Fail, let alone the fact that Julian has as much talent as those no-talent hacks in Hinder and that no-talent hack Anthony "I love doing Cocaine but don't tell anyone, and Saosin ain't shit without me even though I suck worse than Cove Reber" Green, so let's leave Julian out of this one.
"Dead Meat" doesn't sound like the best thing Sean Lennon has done, let alone a good choice for a single, but I still look forward to hearing "Friendly Fire" because that short sampler film had some excellent tunes on it.

He was great! His dad would be very proud.

WOW It is interesting seeing how much he looks like his dad but he sings like his mom. I will pass

ya he looks like Lennon but he sounds horrible really weird video too

Sean has his father's looks but does not have his musical ability, at least not yet. On the other hand, Julian (John's first son)had his father's looks and voice too. Listening to Julian is like listening to his dad.

it definetly doesnt cater to the mainstream folk but to us "artsy" types it's right up our alley, i personally love it.

sean creeps me out. I don't know what it is. Watching him in the interview with Letterman, my skin crawled off and ran away.
He definately looks like his dad. He does not have his dad's voice or the personality that balanced the somewhat dark side his dad had.
Score = 0
It always has to be about his dad doesn't it? The last name may have gotten him on Letterman but it also got him a lot of unfair, preconceived judgements from folks who's heads are stuck in the past... or somewhere else.
But I don't even care anymore, and I don't think he does either. The only thing that matters is that I've got the new Friendly Fire CD and I enjoy it for what it is: A fantastic follow-up to the debut of a talented young artist. I think he's improved quite a bit.

I liked the video, I liked his singing and the band on the Letterman show too. The poor kid has a lot to live up to and I think he has talent that needs time to be developed. I just hope that he can cheer up, he looks a little unhappy and in the "trying to be cool" trap. Unreal how much he looks like his dad at the beginning of the video! There's something about his voice that is very wistful and ethereal, of course he does sound Beatle-esque, but that's not bad as far as I'm concerned. What I would love to see but will probably never happen: a band called "The S.O.B.'s" That would be the Sons of Beatles, and include: Sean and Julian Lennon on vocals and guitar, James McCartney on whatever he plays (bass I hope, to round out the band), Zak Starkey on drums (he's awesome), and Dhani Harrison and guitar and vocals. Wow, what a supergroup that would be!

Stephen - I don't know why but your comment really cracked me up! I'm baffled as to why I found it so funny.
I'm obsessed with this album. Although I'm a Beatlemaniac, ironically, I have a very objective opinion of Sean's talent--I didn't expect anything out of him. I just don't think about post-Beatles stuff, including their offsprings. So I didn't jack squat about Sean. How did I hear these songs? I heard Sean's interview on NPR, where the tunes were played intermittenly throughout, and I thought to myself, this sounds really good! I looked into it, the more I played it, the more I realized, I gotta hear this again!
So last night I found myself buying the whole album and playing it repeatedly. My 2 cents: don't think about The Beatles at all, as it's irrelevant. If you might enjoy a contemplative, mellifluous style, you should love this album.

How about we all just say f##k the beatles and let this guy do his thing. The song was worthy and the video was above average in it's interpretation. If you can't do better than throwing your monkey shit, then SFU.

I think Sean has a lot of talent. Great song. I found it a little erie though, but in a good way. Let'see, how can I explain it, If you listen to the style of the music, it has a bit of a John Lennon style to it. It's as if John is sitting beside sean when he's singing this. Great job Sean, keep going. Would love to see you in concert. John, Love and miss you. God bless

I actually liked this song. I grew up in the post Beatles Era, but grew up with a Beatles fan for a mom :). I was only 4 when Lennon passed away. I think Sean's song is worthy. I loved the lyrics to it.
If you don't compare him to John, I think it's really good. John had years and years to come into his own. Sean will in time do the same. Will he ever be as huge as John? Doubtful, but I think he's doing really well.
Plus think of it this way, his music is more in style of his father's than his mother's, which is a blessing (remember Double Fantasy with her ICE ICE, whatever screeching????)

I actually quite enjoy Sean Lennon's music. Sure he's not a great singer. But neither is Wayne Coyne and the Lips are great. Dig? Music is a lot more than just singing. Kids today and their American Idol don't seem to understand that. Into The Sun was a really really good album. I still enjoy listening to it today. I must say I haven't heard his latest album yet but I will check it out. Actually finding this - I'll try and find it today. As far as him getting easy breaks because he's John Lennon's son, no doubt. But so what? And ... it really pisses me off because. I don't feel jealous one bit. My dad is still alive. Dig it? How can anyone feel jealousy towards someone who's father was SHOT AND KILLED when they were a 5 year old boy. Have some fucking compassion you neanderthal motherfuckers. Seriously. Do you really think this is what it's all about? THINK.
