Stream Nouvelle Vague

Saw Nouvelle Vague last week at Joe's Pub (the perfect venue to see them -- by candlelight, martini in hand). Armed with acoustic guitars, handclaps, and a Powerbook, NV put bossa nova twists on new wave hits like "I Melt With You" and "Just Can't Get Enough." (Remember Frente!'s "Bizarre Love Triangle"? It's not too different than that.) A novelty act for sure, but hard to resist. During "Too Drunk To Fuck" the two sexpot singers ran through the audience and danced on the bar. Jess took some photos, but she's on vacation so those'll have to wait. In the meantime, stream the entire Nouvelle Vague album here (Windows-only).

I coincidently heard that track in the shower the smorning, the version from oye's dj-kicks. Such an amazing bassline, but I always find myself changing the track after the overly outrageous sexual lyrics get to me. It still however fits perfectly in that dj set.

Did anyone catch Trabant at Joe's Pub last week? Or at Pianos on Sunday?

When I first heard about the Nouvelle Vague CD I definitely thought it sounded like a cute novelty concept, but after actually hearing it, I think it transcends novelty status. For one thing, they don't seem to be mocking the original songs. It turns out to be a fairly honest bossa nova pop album.
