Stream The New Beth Orton

Listen at AOLMusic. Mixed press reaction to this one...

Time Out New York:

If Orton wanted to make a big impression after her long silence, it's too bad she apparently felt that meant pandering to people who stream KCRW in their cubicles all day.
Ouch.

Rolling Stone:

Orton sounds more focused than ever, channeling drawled heartache, warm come-ons and snatches of lost AM-radio hits into songs that seek out your inner lullaby. The dark, uptempo "Worms" is the sharpest song she's written in years.
[FYI: On "Worms" she's channeling Fiona Apple.]

Bottom line, if you like Beth Orton you'll like Comfort Of Strangers. Jim O'Rourke produced, played bass and piano, and co-wrote one of the songs. He makes everything better. M. Ward (Jenny Lewis' right-hand man) co-wrote a song too: "Shopping Trolley."

I love this album and I love Beth Orton. I loved it when Beth punched me on the shoulder and called me "tough guy" a few years ago. I havent washed my shoulder since.

That line about "people who stream KCRW in their cubicles all day" sounds like something that was lifted from the "You know you're an indie yuppie when . . ." thread from last year.

where's the post on the cancellation of cat power's US tour? inquiring minds want to know. Since the NY Times made an article about beth orton and cat power, i figured i could add this comment to a beth orton post.

Agree with Nate's comment about the "KRCW" line. It reads like something a mediocre critic/journalist came up with randomly and he finally found a use for it. It's cheap (bad) writing and says nothing about Beth's music other than he really has an issue with people who like Beth's music. On the other hand, maybe Beth's album isn't that good!? Can't wait to listen. Thanks for the link, Stereogum!! (Long time reader, first time..er...threader. LOVE the site)

Yup should be a good album. A video for one of her songs is on her site @ http://bethorton.astralwerks.com/discog.html

Pretty neat video of her and a bunch of puppets.

Listened to the stream. Wow, that Time Out critic is a dumb ass.

Yeah, I was listening to the album on iTunes yesterday, and the piano in "Worms" was ripped right from "Get Him Back." It still sounded hot though.
